Not necessarily for marketing, no: you need it to specify that it can be re-used "including for commercial usage", if you're going to use it on any kind of business/monetized website.

The best way to determine this is by checking the usage restrictions placed on each image. If you can't find this data, then avoid using it. Note also that most copyrights, allowing commercial use, stipulate that you must place a link to acknowledge the usage.

It is a gamble if you can reuse the image. I would recommend against it unless you know for sure.

    Absolutely correct, Alexa and CSmitty.

Unless you have commercial rights to an image: do not use it.

A couple of years ago I posted an image I thought was OK to use and it really opened up a can of worms for me

I was not only told to immediately remove the image but was sent a bill of $1,500 for a copyright violation.

It is not worth it under any circumstances to use an image for which you do not have the rights to use.

BTW: my incident was resolved amicably, but I learned an important lesson which I am heppy to share.

    Just don't do it.

#1 Google states themselves that do not guarantee accuracy on the images searches...they can't...they are not Google's pictures. You should always check with the actual photo source to determine licensing.

#2 As others have mentioned, it may not be available for commercial use.

#3 It may be a Creative Commons licensed image, and in that case, unless it's a CC0, you need to provide attribution when you use the image.

#4 If it's a marketing use and the picture is of a identifiable person or something that is trademarked then you need a property or model release from the photo subject(s).

To be safe you should purchase a cheap stock photo from a reputable site, or use a public domain picture from a legitimate pubdom site (even then you are taking a risk). Keeping in mind if the shot contains a identifiable person or a trademarked property or item you will need a release to be on the safe side.

    Cheers
