Really Long Times For DNS Nameserver Changes

The last couple times I've bought a domain on Godaddy and then changed the DNS nameservers to Namecheap's, it's taken a surprisingly long time to switch over. I'm guessing this is an issue with Namecheap, but I'm not sure. I think the last time, it took maybe 2 days or more. It used to be maybe an hour or two.

I'm guessing I'm not the only one experiencing this. I just got another domain this morning, and hours later, it's still not showing up. It's unbelievable to know that I may have to wait a couple of days or even longer just to begin using my latest site.

I did the same two days back, it was done in few hours.Contact namecheap support, they might be able to help! Godaddy support is just useless!

While I don't have any insight on nameserver changes with GoDaddy/Namecheap, if you want to immediately be able to start developing your site you can edit your computer's hosts file. Doing so will allow your domain name to resolve correctly on your local computer (though of course it won't work on any other computer until your larger DNS issues are resolved.)

A decent guide on how to do so can be found at Beginner Geek: How To Edit Your Hosts File

Another, more advanced, option is to use Dnsmasq if your router supports it (or even running a local name server) -- but for something quick and dirty modifying your hosts file should do the trick -- and all it takes is adding one line of text to a file.

I know it can be frustrating, but (like most registrars) they do say very clearly that it can take 48 hours.

Over the 5 years or so that I've been doing this (at Namecheap), it's usually taken less than 3 hours, and sometimes only half an hour. But there have also been odd times (historically - not just in 2014) that it really has taken 48 hours, or even a little longer. On those occasions, their live support staff have told me that it's entirely outside Namecheap's control, and there's absolutely nothing they can do about it. I think that's probably true, too.

Be thankful you're doing this now and not 10 years ago.

On average, propagation takes anywhere from minutes to 48 hours. You have to think of all those root nameservers and cache records.

I use a few domain registrars and DNS settings seem to propagate a different times for each domain name registrars.

Godaddy- dns settings propagate extremely fast (minutes).

Namesilo- dns settings propagate in about an hour or two.

Name- slow, I've been waiting for about 6 hours and nothing.

To a fair extent, DNS is outside the registrars control.

They update their files and then it's up to the various ISPs around the world how often they update the details they hold.

This is normally done on a regular basis - multiple times a day is fairly normal but some ISPs can be less - but it's not instant every time something changes.

And as Tom says - be thankful it's not a decade ago where several days was the norm and occasionally even longer than that.
