Get out of your head that you need a mentor

I feel like a lot of newbies and people here struggle to know what it is to do online that they think they need to pay somebody $1,000+ in order to succeed online.

I had several people ask me recently if they could pay me X amount of $$ in order for me to coach them personally.

Even if I did coach them, if they don't want to put into action what I am teaching, it is still nothing. This is why there are people who still invest money in a mentor and still end up with little cash or earnings.

Don't get me wrong....I do understand the bigger concept that having somebody guide you, giving you advice, and giving you the strategies is still worth it, but you don't need somebody to email or talk to on the phone and pay $1,000+ to in order to succeed.

You can do it without having to pay $997+ to somebody on the Warrior Forum or any other guru. Several guys can help you get to the top, no doubt (in fact, I know many people here who have spent thousands on coaching and it did pay off), but a lot of the potential results is still up to you and what you're willing to do on your part. 80% of your success is still based on what you can do and what you're willing to put into this.

(Let me just say though, that I have coached many people personally, but I always try to make sure that they are READY and are not just looking for the easiest way out.)

Lastly, if you're a newbie, sometimes all you need is that "one' strategy to get yourself started. If you have the time to put it into action and to learn from every single mistake you make, you can eventually continue and keep growing without having to have somebody receive $997 from your wallet.

I've started many businesses, and can't say that I had a mentor on a single one of them. What I did was find people that could help me, and turned their work into profit.

You're right. A coach/mentor is not necessary to become a successful online marketer. However, having a coach can really speed up the process and get you going on the right path.

Like you said, having a coach doesn't guarantee anything (you still have to do the work), but with the guidance of an experienced marketer, you won't have to go through all the trial and error that most people have to go through before they start to do things properly.

I will admit that I have mixed emotions when it comes to mentors. I have yet to use one because most want more money than I have had. I have not had the success I want at this point, either.

The basic thing I have learned online is that your list is your main asset. I am working on building mine. I am working on content and follow up.

I do take courses that I can afford. I sign up for training and ebooks.

You have to see these investments as college tuition. Except that the college we are going to is the school of hard knocks online.

We have to pick the right courses for ourselves, implement, and keep learning. When you finish one course, don't let much time pass and start another one.

The idea is to never stop learning and working at the same time. You have to do both, learn and work.

The high priced mentors are worth it I'm sure in many cases.

But, let's say that I reach the milestone I am looking for financially. I know how to earn the income from the courses I have had and some bumps and bruises.

If I see somebody struggling and I also see that they are open to learning, I will help them either for free or for a small fee.

Consulting for a big corporation that wants a copywriter is one thing. I am currently taking a course in copywriting. That is a skill and the corporation is set up to pay the price.

A struggling individual, though, is different. I can't tell that individual that he has to fork over several thousand for a short time before I help.

That is just my take on having and being a mentor. If an individual acts like they don't want to put the time in, tell them you can't help them.

I like to use forums like this and a few others for advice when I need it. I can read posts others have written and look at the replies and learn a great deal.

There are other ways to learn as well.

Having said all this, the day may come when I hire a mentor. But I will have to weigh several things first.

I learned there is no magic bullet many moons ago and the biggest thing is to build a responsive list and build trust with said list. I'm working on that.

Hope all of you enjoy your weekend. You made a good point with the initial post, internetmarketer1

    You're ABSOLUTELY right.

The way I see it, is that if someone is going to succeed online or offline, they're going to succeed with or without the help of a mentor or coach.

Half the coaches or mentors out there need their own coach, and actually, a popular WSO creator pushes a coaching program to teach other people how to coach even if they don't make a dime online.

It's tenacity, perseverance, and ability to put your knowledge not just in action, but laser focused action in order to succeed in anything you do.

Sometimes you don't know what you don't know.... a good mentor won't do the work for you but they don't let you waste time and effort on the wrong things either which can save a whole lot of heartburn and frustration.

A coach/mentor is not necessary, but it helps a bit to clear your mind.

    The mind is everything.
The mentor is great to clear your mind.

What I really dislike is that people think that with a mentor , there will be no need to work...

With a mentor or not, if you're procrastinating there's no way you'll succeed.

One thing that is helpful is to have an accountability partner so that you can check In with each other to stay on task and follow through with the steps you are working on. In fact, I notice a lot of coaching programs also include an accountability buddy, so doing that on your own is a way to accelerate the process.

Iv'e been doing this for sometime and I do agree. There are a lot of people out there that claim to be mentors but just want your money! I'm going to recommend that you get started and get your feet wet and get a feel for the internet business before paying for a mentor. I just set up a system where you can get started for free promoting products through a free blogger account and if you want to upgrade to a .com site later I made a free system for that as well. You just need to pay for hosting. If your wondering why I'm giving away that much value for free it's because if you make money off of the free system and the free training I'm involved in several businesses and I want you to know I'm being honest first.

Probably because half the people on this forum are either offering said services or they are promoting something related as an affiliate.

You may or may not need a mentor, depending on your own personality. If youre too focused already and ready to learn from scrap no one can stop you!
Having a mentor can definitely ease up all that pressure to self-learn or reinvent the wheel!

I really like how you said learn from scrap. That's exactly what it's like when you're just starting.

For me the reason I thought I needed a mentor to succeed was I had no real validation that what I was trying was correct or was going to make me any money.

I've had some small successes and I've learned to appreciate studying IM by reading books, articles, and talking to other marketers. I no longer feel a mentor is necessary because the people that I looked up to when I first started a few months back aren't that much smarter than me.

After awhile you start to see how everything ties in to everything else and it becomes fun.

I totally agree that having a mentor is not an absolute requirement for becoming a successful IMer. If someone wants to succeed bad enough, and they are very determined, they can find what they need on their own without emptying their bank account. Heck, there's a gold mine of info right on this very forum.

I'm not saying that having a mentor will not help. But is it a necessity? Probably not. I think the idea of having a "mentor" can be chalked up as being a bit more marketing dogma and a bit less actual reality.

I think you need to figure out who the 'legit' guys are in this industry (chales ngo, david ford etc) and study their methods inside and out. After you're familiar with their methods, take action!

I wouldn't go as far as saying people "don't need a mentor" but I agree. Most of those guys don't know what it's like to not know everything. So there's a lot of holes that never really get filled. Do with what you can and what you know, always learn, and trust the process.

A coach isn't needed, but if you have no idea where to start one could be beneficial, but as you said, only if the person is serious about succeeding. Ideas mean nothing without taking action.

I disagree. You need a mentor. It's not a "must" of course, you can succeed without any, but I would rather go with one than not. Some of them (the right ones) worth every penny they charge.

I'm a complete newbie with no clue how to even get started. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time . I'm 51 and a half have no money saved for retirement and a job that I absolutely hate. I'm very motivated, I get up an hour earlier than I need to so I can research/study then go work my butt off 10 hours a day, come home and spend 2 or 3 hours a nite on the computer trying to figure out how to start, Where to get a good product, who can I trust, who's just after my money. I need help

You can be successful with or without a mentor

However a good mentor is the BIGGEST short cut you can take to success.

I have one and also make sure I ready and develop myself.

  • I dont think Mark Zackerberg, Larry Page, Steve Jobs, etc had a mentor, and they did fairly well... Why? because they got off their ass and got working!

Mentors are for procrastinators or for people who don't really have anything to offer to the market. Stop wasting time, clear up your mind, set up a VERY short-term plan of action, and get "doing" instead of "talking".

I'm not so sure what the point of this post is, apart from a very
    obvious fact.

No one NEEDS a car, you can always walk.
No on NEEDS a light bulb, you can use a candle.
No one NEEDS a bulldozer, you can use a shovel.

    Is there something I'm missing?

Been scammed in mentoring here in WF. Though I do believe it's easier to follow someone who has been there and done that, but beware of scammers. Observe by yourself and keep a list of the expertise of each one of your interest, better start by buying their courses then later progress to coaching. Learn and observe before you jump.
