Any unheard of methods to defeat procrastination that is working for you?

Has anyone tried anything quite different from what most people are trying in order to defeat procrastination? I want to hear something new and unusual. I would like to employ these new methods for the new year.

What I usually do is try to complete work as soon as possible and as early in the day as possible. I work for an hour and then take a break for like 30 minutes. I'll try to stay out of the room for 30 minutes. Then come back and work for another hour or so.

Why have the old methods not worked for you?

What about the old methods that is not working do you think the new methods will do better?

I have a few tips but they are all old methods so not sure they would work for you.

      hi
I have not said that the old methods have not worked, its just that I am always looking to improve my self. I don't think that one can be satisfied at any moment with their self. You should always be looking to improve your self. I just want to try something new.

      thanks

Okay- I was just wondering if there was a problem with old or "tried and true".

One thing is, if you have a plan and commitment then you will be less likely to procrastinate.

If you had a job and procrastinated all morning and showed up an hour late every day then you would lose the job.

If you had a flight to the Bahamas and procrastinated all day and missed the flight then you would miss out on your vacation.

In both those cases there is a clear deadline (office opens/flight leaves), with incentive to meet the deadline (paid/vacation), and pain for missing the deadline (fired/miss vacation).

        A few things:

        1) Clear task oriented goals

If your goal is "start list building" it is too vague and will lead to procrastination as you do "research".

If your goal is "find opt-in squeeze template" then you have a specific target (goal). Instead of doing random research, you are dong targeted research (you know what you are looking for) that will end when you reach your goal (find a suitable template).

        2) Time your tasks

There are many good "task timers" to help you get work done. By tying yourself to a timer you will:

        A) Hold yourself accountable and have a set period for the work
        B) Race to beat the timer and get tasks done more quickly

        3) Take breaks every 30 minutes (or other suitable time period)

Force yourself to take breaks after a set time period. This keeps you fresh and focused.

Do not skip breaks. It is tempting to skip breaks because you are "on a roll". This just encourages working when you feel like it and not when you don't. You need to discipline yourself to work consistently whether you feel like it or don't.

If you are "on a roll", make a note of where you are and then take a break anyway. You need to be able to get "back in the groove" after a break.

This helps train consistency in focus. The ability to leave a task but still retain focus and passion when you return.

Again- all old school stuff- I guess the devil is in the details.

One problem with procrastination is you often procrastinate about doing anything to fix it.

I've never suffered from it. I enjoy what I do - love it, actually - so it's no great hardship. That being said, I often motivate myself by devoting a portion of earnings from one project or other to getting something. I'll use a picture of that something on my desktop.

I make a habit of planning my day in the morning. I set up a priority list every day which must be achievable. The important thing is to be honest with yourself when you make up this list. It does not help to have a huge list and you know there is not enough time in the day to do everything. Better to take smaller steps and complete it for the day than leaving half of the list for the next day or week. Although there is nothing wrong to postpone some things that might be better to do later in the week. You might ask why I do my planning in the morning and not the previous day.

Many times I find that things are happening fast on the previous afternoon that I need to finish the next day. So I have fallen into the habit of early morning daily planning. I like to take small steps at a time. If you look back at what you have completed over a week you feel satisfied and content with your weeks work and deserve that well earned beer and barbecue with your friends.

You need to find out the root cause of your procrastination, first and foremost. Aside from that, finding an accountability partner or group has done wonders of many people.

Be honest about why you're procrastinating. Is it because you're afraid of uncertainty? Is it laziness? No sense of direction? Lack of goals that move you?

Find out the reason first and that will help you overcome this issue.

I'd have to agree with "Get Rich Methods" comment above.

I absolutely love what I do.

I don't consider it work by any means.

    BUT...

...there are sometimes when I'm feeling super lazy.

I'll usually put on some of my favorite music and rock
out to it for straight 30 minutes. I'll also head over to
Youtube and find some funny videos of people falling
or something like that just to get a giggle.

After that, I usually have no problem getting back on
    track.

Start a group or just a friend you will be accountable to at the end of the day...what did you get done today? Do the same for them. Maybe Skype at the end of every day and report.

Make it a contest to see who can get more done, you will try and outdo each other.

Stop posting on forums looking for new ideas. Extended researching is one of the classic ways of procrastinating. The truth is, stopping a habit of procrastinating is similar to the way members of AA stop drinking. They just stop drinking and do something else instead.

There are no secrets to stop procrastinating, you just do something that will bring you closer to your goal.

Not that I know anything abut procrastinating from personal experience or anything.
