Do you have to lose tons of cash to get rid of "Shiny Object Syndrome" ?

Hey all,

As the title says, i have a problem called "Shiny Object Syndrome" and I keep on jumping from products to product and never getting anywhere. I want to stop this thing from holding me back. So i have one simple question:

Do I really have to waste lots of money to finally stop falling for these shiny objects?

What happens is that when I see some shiny make money online product I want to get in RIGHT AWAY without even proper research... This I believe is the reason for my failure, and I can't really help it. Do i have to lose more money to wake up ? Any help please.

No... you do not have to lose more money.

You have to engage your brain and disengage your emotions
    from basic business decisions.

That's it. It's simple. Do it today.

What else do you need more than your own experience (you wasted money that yielded you no earnings), and thousands of posts on this forum telling that you should not ever buy any of this without knowing how the bussines work and having some previous experience actually making money?

If you can tell that something you do is giving you no results but you cannot decide to stop doing that and chage your strategy, I am afraid that there is nothing anything can do on this forum to make you change your mind.

What products have you bought so far? Did you buy actual software to help you perform a job or service? Or, did you buy info products?

I would not suggest buying any more info products as most of what you need to know about marketing can be found online for free at forums and blogs and websites and much of the information in those ebooks you are buying is outdated anyway.

My advice is to find one way that earns money for you and stick to it. The process of elimination to find that might take some time, but you will get there.

As for what earns money, that will depend on you (what you love, how you market). The most important thing you can do with any niche or product idea you pick is to start an email list, collecting names and talking to those people.

While I agree with the first portion here, the remainder overlooks the situation and the mindset of a typical IM beginner. Having been in the business for 20 years, a little over actually, I certainly don't succumb to "Shiny Object Syndrome" but I can perfectly understand why some newcomers do. They see a business model purporting to solve their problem; they buy; the problem fails to get solved; they move on. Question being: is the newcomer to blame or the shiny object? Most likely, it's often a case of both, but in the majority of instances I'd put it down to the beginner either not having the requisite skills or simply not putting in the work to make the model - well - work. Solution: find a model that works, put in the work to make it work - before moving on.

So your brain is some out of control entity that makes you do things you don't want to do? Maybe you should book an appointment with a therapist. Seriously.

No, that was not my point. I WANT to do these things because of my emotions and not because of logic. You completely misunderstood me and no, I don't need a therapist. Thanks anyway.

What is working for me is using the search bar in this forum for information and the best part is its FREE. I recently bought over $100 of work from Fiverr for a few websites I wanted to promote for profit. I didn't make a cent, I was confused and before moving on I had to find out what went wrong so I decided to get a clue, if you never get a clue you will keep buying and buying. Why not save time and money and put the hours in and get the jest of how IM works.

No, you do not have to keep losing money to wake up. I suggest you write down exactly what your goals are, then also make note of HOW you're going to achieve them. Once you know how, you need to constantly remind yourself to stick to that one method.

For example, let's say you decided that you want to make an extra $4,000 a month from a blog. You would then identify that you must build an email list of loyal followers so you can build your marketable audience. Also, you need to put out high quality content on a consistent basis to attract subscribers to begin with.

Therefore the steps in having success with your blog might look like this:
          1. Build your blog site, with a free offer to entice visitors into giving up their email so they'll be on your list.
          2. Create quality content to draw in visitors.
          3. Promote your content through social media etc.
          4. Network with other bloggers, engage in guest blogging etc.
          5. Use your initial earnings to outsource the heavy work, allowing you to scale.

Of course, the above steps should follow that you have a profitable blog topic to begin with. Some VERY lucrative markets you could build a blog around are weight loss, relationships/dating, and dog training.

I just randomly used blogging as an example, by the way, I'm not suggesting you actually do that. Choose a proven business model and stick to it. Write down the steps you need to take daily and follow through.

This takes lot of discipline but it will be worth it.

When I was new in the internet marketing business way back 10 years ago. I never spend a single dime but I made a fortune.

What I invest is almost 1 year of trial and error. But of course if you have money to invest, I guess you do not need to wait one year to make good income online.

What I learned in my experience is that when you find something that works for you, focus on it until it become stable before trying another opportunity. Avoid the Kangaroo mindset.

Accept the fact that all the information you need is available for free. Work out your own strategies, and find your own 'secrets' they are much more powerful than somebody else's 'secrets'. If you have worked it out yourself it will be real secret, if you buy a secret off the shelf isn't really be a secret.

A secret can be in open sight, it can be is something you believe to be true, but nobody else does. It can be an observation of the market. You must have these ideas to grow a business.

If people stopped buying shiny objects, then one of two things would happen.

    1. products would get better.
    2. junk sellers would disappear.

I hope both happen, If you ask this one question before making a purchase you will save loads of cash.

    "Does this product involve gimmicks"

Gimmicks are usually easy to spot but there have been a few fairly interesting gimmicks cleverly disguised as a product.

Anything that prompts a visitor to do something in exchange for taking some kind of action, opt ins, free reports, digital reports, facebook junk, popups, ect.

If you have ever seen a video on youtube and you had to sit through a 30 second video just to see the video you wanted to watch in the first place then you know how most people feel about gimmicky offers.

If they are selling you a gimmick so that you can get more traffic or trying to sell someone who is only after the free thing, you're not going to see much in the way of product value or ROI.

The stuff I buy is always something I can use, either in a project or as part of developing a better service. (its not foolproof, because everyone gets burned but it does reduce the risk of getting burned)

You don't need to buy any course or ebook, as pretty much anything you need to know is available for free online (blog posts, Youtube, etc - just be choosy about who you're getting your information from). Ultimately you make money by selling stuff, not by buying or passively consuming stuff. If you want to make money, you should be spending most of your time selling stuff to people who want it, not reading sales pages or ebooks. Yes, you need information initially to guide you, but then you have to get your content and offers out there, so people can buy from you. Otherwise, you're not going to make much money, if any at all.

  • I think that it would be silly to buy a product that will attempt to cure you from the Shiny Object Syndrome , when in actuality in buying that product you'd realistically be falling for another "Shiny Object" so to speak.

Look..there are good products out here on the Warrior Forum. Even some of the ones that present themselves as Shiny Objects. But i think at some point one has to take a step back and ask themselves

"Is It The Product, Or Is It Just Me?"

As said before, alot of times the product doesn't work for said person after putting in very little effort, therefore it's qualified as a failure and you move on to the next thing.

This results in a evergreen flow from 1 shiny object to the next.

At some point you have just got to pick one sure model that is tried, tested, and proven to work, and put in the blood sweat and tears to make that 1 thing work.

And if you're thinking "Well, what's that 1 thing?" There's multiple things out there that work, but not enough time is put into it to make it work . I'm guilty of this myself and have learned from it tremendously over the years.

With that being said, Of course Sales Letters are made to be flashy, they are made to attract, they are made to get prospects to click the buy button. And alot of times there's no guarantee of a solid product behind that Buy Button.

But i seriously doubt that every single product that you have bought on the forum has been useless and lacked the necessary information needed to successfully make money online.

And this forum is famous for calling people out when they deliver BS crappy products just for a payday.

But just hang in there my man. Stop Jumping, Pick one thing, and FOCUS.

I to suffered from Shiny Object Syndrome up until last year, In fact i wrote a thread about how bad it had become. I will tell you what helped me.

When I did my taxes last year, I was forced to look at how much I spent while chasing my Shiny Object Syndrome, and it was startling, honestly made me angry at myself.

I decided to write down my goals, my main purpose for wanting to be an entrepreneur...
Was it to make extra money? be my own boss, or just to Damn lazy to continue working for the man....

I deciding to take responsibility for my actions, and my future, product sellers can't make me rich, only action can produce results....

Now when I even consider buying any wso, or anything online, I ask myself, will this product help me reach my goals? If not I move on..

If the wso is not going to help you reach your true goals then don't hit that buy button.
Unsubscribe from the lists you are on that only pimp products...
You know which ones provide zero value, and which ones provide great content...

I now only subscribe to 5 lists, and I have learned more from free offers then all the wso's I have bought put together.

Time for you to Man or Woman Up, get smart..Don't Buy It, if You Ain't Gonna Try It!!!!!

    Good Luck to You,

You will buying "Shiny Object" out there until you will realize that there is no shortcrust out there to make money.

At the beginning, It isn't easy..

If you want to be successful be prepared to put in the work, and be willing to test and tweak.

This business requires time, money and commitment.

Most people just do what they want to do and not what they need to do. Successful people do whatever needs to be done and they treat their business like a business.

While everyone have fun, I was working to bring me one step closer to my desired outcome.
Hard work, persistence... no shortcrust and push bottom "Shiny Object"...
    Everyday you have a choice.

How you will spend your time.

I think what you're missing is a structure. You're seeing all these offers on how to do something or how to make money with it, but you need to implement a structured plan. If you find anything useful from what you're reading and buying, keep it aside.

I would personally recommend putting together a sales funnel and put together a blog to help you brand yourself as an authority. Someone might have 100k leads, but someone with 10k leads could easily outweigh them.

Either way, you have to invest in your time. Paying for the necessities is essential in any business, but rather than buying into another "how to", start building a foundation for yourself and take things from there.

The funny thing about shiny object syndrome is if you ask 100 people you'll get 100 different answers. This has got to be one of the top 20 most discussed subjects in the Warriror Forum.

If you do a search you'll notice 90% of the answers are good. So, what you'll have to do is look over the hundreds of answers and find what resonates with you .

I'd guess most Internet marketers have gone through shiny object syndrome to one degree or another. Some call it research, exploring your options or even learning from experience ... others call it shiny object syndrome. One thing for sure going broke will cure it. Don't let it happen to you.

The good news? At least you're admitting your problem before going broke - that's better than many. I wish you the best.

I think that we've all been "guilty" (if that's the correct term of S.O.S). I admit to suffering from it, although I generally do at the very least recover the investment. I try now to do some research on what I am buying although with the usual "reviews" on You Tube etc, being from affiliates ( trying their hand at affiliate Jacking) it's quite difficult to get a neutral POV. I tend to ask trusted affiliate promoters who even if not promoting will take a look and fortunately post a "no-holds barred" review for their readers. Although not many of these exist there are some, who have integrity and forego the tempting JV offers and deliver their honest opinion, This approach has saved me not just money but tons of time, effectively "beta testing" plugins and software for free ( not often do new products live up the the claims made in the sales pages

    Just my opinion,

    TQ,

Just stop! Pick something. Establish a reasonable timeframe (3 months) or number of hours (300) to dedicate to it to see if it is something you can be successful at and work your ass off to achieve it.

IF you put in the effort and it does not work then invest another third of you original timeframe (1 month) or hours (100) before moving onto the next opportunity.

Working hard is not nearly as sexy as chasing shiny objects but it is:
    A) A hell of a lot cheaper.
    B) 1000X more likely to make you the income you desire!

    Best of luck!

First, understand that "shiny object syndrome" is not a condition, but rather a marketing technique that you are continually falling for. If you study the methods used by such marketers, you will find them all to be using the same old "hype" pitches similar to snake oil hucksters from generations ago.

As P.T. Barnum noted, "There's a sucker born every minute". This will never change. Some of the best marketing lessons I've seen over the years was from buying WSO's and carefully observing the sales process, (mostly as training material for my own marketers) then usually trashing the often useless products.

Sorry I hadn't had a chance to see your link before writing earlier. Just wanted to say good job on the review but would change the theme a little bit. Move the about me section to the side & make it shorter as that is the 1st thing you read when you get to the site. I would say you need a sales funnel with a free eBook like I have for mine. Also, get a autoresponder as that will allow to keep your subscribers after they sign up for the free eBook & most people don't make a purchase till they have seen a product 7-10 times. The autoresponder will allow you to send them emails every few days & should help you start making sales. Keep up the good work

Unsubscribe from all those email lists pitching you products. Next, stop visiting the WSO section. If you just buy whatever is new, you'll never get any where, so you have to stop visiting the one place that updates everyday with new products.

You should then visit every other sub-forum aside from the WSO section. Gather ideas and decide to get really good at one thing. Then devote your time studying the crap out of it.

You might end up mastering a service that could be sold in the "warriors for hire" section or creating a future WSO detailing your new field of expertise.

The key here is mastering one thing to the point of elevated knowledge, not just from reading forum posts, but from applying the stuff, getting your hands dirty, then plowing forth using experience as your guide.

My "thing" was SEO for many years. I decided to stop buying tiny products, i did my research, spent a lot of money on trial and error and not new products that would lead me stray.

Right now you have to kill the momentum of buying new stuff. Forcing yourself to focus on one area will help you build interest into that area and slowly kill your desire to move into other fields of interest.

I have always been an "information junkie" and when I got interested in IM it got totally out of control. I've got products I purchased two years ago and have never even opened! And I adore plugins. I finally took a hard look at this and made a major change in my thinking.

Most products that I purchased were for things I thought I would use further down the road. "Some day" I would want to do this or that. The problem: If that day ever comes, what you bought is obsolete. Newer products or tools are far superior, or the method or technique is all over the web for free. And, in many cases, "some day" still hasn't come. So.. money down the drain.

My strategy now? Buy only one product that you plan to use right now. Install it or adopt it immediately, and go for it 100%. Do not get sidetracked. Do not look at new products until you've taken this one all the way.

Well, you need to stop and think about where you will be 10 years from now. If you continue to buy product after product without taking action, you will end up spending thousands of dollars with nothing to show for it.

It's up to you to make the decision to get serious about the direction you're headed, and get serious about building an online business.

I can tell you really want to stop buying products, because it takes some courage to admit that you're wrong, but admitting you have problem is the first step. Now you need to address the problem. Unsubscribe from the email lists of people who promote products to you daily and find a business model you want to get involved with.

Set some goals for yourself and work towards those goals. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing or the next shiny product. Just work towards your goals and stay focused.

I still get distracted by Bright Shiny Object Syndrome sometimes, but I have learned just to try to focus now on what is working. When you start out, it's easy to get distracted.

You have to figure out what you know how to do, what you like to do, whether you want an online biz or one that caters to bringing offliners online, etc.

I have plans of doing other things with my business, but I have to focus on what's working now, before I jump to other things. Otherwise, you never really accomplish things and it feels frustrating. Also, when you see something that you think you need to buy, go away for a bit. Don't buy it right away. Something new will come along the next day. I can guarantee it. Always take a step away before buying. Hope that helps.

If you would like, I can send you a link with free info on avoiding Bright Shiny Objects. Just private message me.

You need to get focused. Pick one method, master it and stick to it. After you have mastered one method, then learn another one. Baby steps. If you can't control yourself or your purchasing, then get way from IM because it isn't right for you.

Thanks everyone for helping me out on this... I know there are some people talking about I need to see therapists or grow up etc but I think it's just their way to help.. And I completely understand that sometimes harsh is a good way to teach something and I don't feel bad at all. I respect them taking their time to make me realize that I need to get out of it. I've decided to stop chasing new products and looking for "next best thing on the internet". You guys have inspired me to take some serious action now... I bought BTF and it was a great buy and I still believe that it works although I realize my mistake of creating a BTF review site without actually trying it but now I'm going to target different keywords that are related to problems, got lots of products to promote, are profitable and starts with "how to" etc and stick to BTF and put in time, focus and investment required to make it work. I'm planning some serious action now including acquiring an aged site, outsourcing my main content, outsourcing backlinks etc and not doing anything blackhat or anything which will harm my business and most importantly, not giving up. Now I'm prepared to invest in even $1,000 or whatever the amount is required for my business needs and STICK to BTF and make it work.

    Let's do it...

I don't think the problem was the products or systems that you purchased.

I think the real problem is NOT taking action. I don't know you or what you did but I get the feeling that is what happened.

Find the right system that you would feel proud to promote and go to town. Don't listen to your own mind because it will just try and talk you out of doing anything at all.

Mindset is way more important than any other skill in this industry and life in general.

    You have 2 options!
    - lose money or
    - lose time

    Here is what I learned!!
    - Look past the sales page. The goal for the product is to get you to buy! that's why it's a sale's page "to entice your emotions"
    - understand that the product is still going to be there tomorrow. If their is a timer on it, their will be a timer on it tomorrow saying the same thing. ITS A SALES PAGE!
    - understand that your not goign to make money now or tomorrow without first having a website and content for a sub niche you have chosen to close in on.
    - understand that every method (if youre a newbie) takes months to implement. So youre going to be trying for a while.
    - Understand that while you're making other marketers richer, you getting poorer and wasting time not doing ANYTHING
    - LOOK PAST THE SALES PAGE/DONT READ IT! If it isnt telling you what method it is using to profit from (are they websites or social media marketing) If they arent giving the secrets away for free first. It is most likely a waste of time and money.
    - Never buy software from other marketers. Chances are that the same software will come up a month later by a different person.

IF YOU CANT STOP BUYING!!!! (LOOK PAST THE SALES PAGE)
    - stick to buying products based on the same concept. this way you will learn everything about that concept and you will eventually get bored oF theory and actually start taking action AND STOP WASTING YOUR TIME!
    - REMEMBER YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME BY JUMPING FROM "MAKE 100$ IN 3 DAYS" TO "NEW SOFTWARE PROMISING THIS" AND NOT MAKING ANY MONEY DOING IT!
    - YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME AND NOT MAKING ANY MONEY.
    - EVERY METHOD TAKES MONTHS TO IMPLEMENT. SPEND THAT MONEY ON CONTENT! (at least with content you can sell it to someone else)

So dont worry your not gonna rich for a while.

    FOLLOW THE BASICS
    - keyword research
    - website/buy templates
    - content (write it yourself or hire writers from this forum)
    - SEO/marketing (either free or paid)

Want to get over being addicted to buying new products? Get addicted to making YOUR OWN new products. Start with small and simple products (i.e. 20 page report) and move up from there.

For some people, this constant buying of infoproducts is just another form of procrastination or delaying as they really don't know what to do and likely won't take any concrete action to make anything happen.

dragonboy46, shiny object syndrome is easy to fall into. What I have found is there is a fine line between shiny object syndrome and buying some training to see what it is inside.

Sometimes you will buy training that you only get one nugget from and not use the rest of it.

Buy training from known leaders and you will be better off.

I have bounced around some myself, too much to be sure. I am mostly working on building my list right now.

Your list is where you need to focus right now. Without a doubt.

You have to invest in yourself to make yourself valuable, but you have to use some judgement and discipline in what you buy.

Focus on your list right now. Invest in an auto responder, start an email campaign, and invest in a lead capture system and solo ads. If you haven't already that is.

Those investments are solid investments of your money and your time.

You might start an ebook on the pitfalls of shiny object syndrome. There is a difference in that and buying training to invest in yourself.

"Work harder on yourself than you do your job!" - Jim Rohn

Figure out WHAT you want to build online and WHY you are doing it.

In my opinion, stop looking for systems and shortcuts IF that is the case, and focus on building a business.

Once you have got the plans written up for your biz, there is no problem buying stuff that helps YOUR business - just ask:

"How does this benefit my business?"

"Do i need this NOW to bring me closer to where i want to go?"

As others have said - once you have the plan and you know where you are going - you should invest in yourself - but if you are buying everything under the sun it is normally through a feeling of overwhelm,

Don't overwhelm yourself - focus on where you want to go first.

    Good Luck!

    All the best,

    Chris Jones
