To Pre-Populate or Not?

The technology exists to pre-populate forms.

I have a script update that would allow solo providers to pass
on an email address to a page.
(where their customer has ordered this premium service.)

I have already run split tests. I was not offering a freebie -
just more info on what I was selling. I got more opt-ins from
the pre-populated forms. The sales percentage was the same for both lists.

Before I contact the solo script owner and put this technology together,
I would like to know Your thoughts on this.

Imagine You clicked a link from an email and arrived at a landing page
with your email already filled in.

Thanks in Advance for Your Comments,
Larry Keenan

Leadpages have implemented this and I think it would help a lot.

Prepopulating Landing Page Fields = Incrased Conversion

I'm looking to incorporate this soon.

This is magic for me. I mean, i've clicked a link on WF that took me to a landing page where my e-mail address was pre-populated!!! WTF??

And yes, it was from leadpages. How they've got my email address? I didn't click a link from someone using aweber etc (if so, this would make sense as you can pass email addresses to other urls, but this was not the case). I guess they're collecting data from cookies or who knows.

My first impression (user perspective): Didn't like it and didn't submit the form.

A different thing is if you pre-populate a form on a thank you page for someone who has just purchased something from you and you want to add it to your list.

For example: warrior+ and jvzoo allow you to automatically collect emails from customers BUT many of those addresses are used for payments only (many customers won't see your emails). In this case, a pre-populate would be good to allow the client to change the address.

If I have an existing relationship with the company/person providing this, i.e. a webinar sign-up form then sure it would be handy. You might spook a few people off but today I think most people understand that once their online they are going to be followed by some sort of technology.
