301 Redirect Help!

I'm looking for some advice with someone who has switched domains on their websites.

I have a new domain, and I'm going to transfer my wordpress blog over to it.

Do I first just need to do a 301 redirect for a few months to let Google know what is going on before actually transferring the blog over?

Do I keep creating content on the old domain while the 301 redirect is in place?

Thank you for the help!

  • I can't necessarily give you a clear answer on the 301 redirect part of moving domains without knowing your existing site structure, but one huge piece of advice I have is to use Google Webmaster Tools to ensure that Google knows what you're up to. There's a Change of Address tool within there to guide you and Google through the process.

  • You would create content on the new site/domain. 301 redirect everything on the old domain to the new one. You need to not just have a 301 from the main domain to the new domain, you should be 301'ing every indexed page that you care about to the new location.

  • 301 Redirect means completely redirect on new domain . so if you have any problem on old domain & its back link then all problems are transferred on your new website.so that can be problems to your new domain . according me the most important part of content & page URL only redirect on new domain, for safe new Google updates
