No More Editing Posts?

Question?

I have a WSO running that has a limited number of copies going out and I've been editing the number remaining with each sale.

Well, today, I went to update it and the "edit" button is gone.

Can we no longer edit our posts?

This is going to create a bit of a problem with WSOs where the seller is only selling a certain number of copies and wants to keep the members updated on the number of copies remaining.

Is there a workaround for this other than creating a new post on the WSO thread saying "Only X number of copies left?"

You might only be allowed to edit a post a set number of times.

Here's a potential solution, I don't know if it will work - I'll test it in a minute.

Upload an image to your server saying - x remaining.
Link to the image within the forum (it doesn't copy it to WF's server, so the image served is from your server)
With each sale, edit the image and change the number.
Upload it again to your server (with the same filename)

It's not a pretty solution, but it is a solution.

    Kindest regards.
    Karl.

I'll make some images and test it.

Here's the test, I've uploaded an image with the number 1...

I'm about to edit it and change to 2... if my theory is right, it should automatically change when I upload it to my server.

      [edit]Yes, it works...

[edit2]Testing how many edits of posts are allowed.

[edit3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]It appears there's no limit to editing capabilities on posts in the main forum... as I've not yet done a WSO here I can't work out the limitations.

Is it possible there's a time limit for editing a post?

i.e. After X days, the post becomes locked for further editing.

[Edit] ...Looks like it. And it looks like it's 24 hours...

Check any posts you made over 24 hours old. Can you still edit them?

Well, this presents a problem for me. While your workaround is great, I
can't use it for this WSO because I can't edit the WSO to insert the
              image.

Oh well, I'll know for the next time. This should be posted somewhere
in the WSO forum letting people know that if they have this kind of WSO
( I know many people who do) they won't be able to update the copies
              still left.

There's one more, tiny way it could work... might add a bit more 'punch' to your marketing too.

                Change your avatar pic to...

                This WSO
                has only ------>>
                3 copies left
                (not in the wso forum?
                check my sig for details)

And use Option 1 - Enter the URL to the Image on Another Website

                Kindest regards,

Actually, I am doing that, but a lot of people don't look at signatures or
they'll see one figure in the WSO and then another in my sig and get
                    totally confused.

But yes, I do have to update my sig. Haven't done that since last night.

With each edit, save it as a jpg or gif and upload it to your server...

Point your avatar to it et voila.

Thanks Allen. This would have created some interesting solutions and maybe
even a call for a programmer to come up with a way to update sale count
                            JPGs on the fly.

Now some poor programmer is out of work.

lol, steven, I was already one step ahead and working on a solution for
PayPal IPN to automatically rename a file on the server with each sale.

Basically it would have done this:

                              - User uploads, say 10 images... 1.jpg-10.jpg (containing the numbers) and also image.jpg (the highest number)
                              - User points to image: image.jpg in their post.
                              - PayPal IPN changes the name of the files, in order to image.jpg with each sale.

Ah well... back to work for me

that's brilliant idea You can also make it work by creating images on the fly with the updated numbers.

Okay, they're animated GIFs. I used to have an animated GIF maker years
                                          ago but it's long gone.

I know you can do stuff like this in Photoshop, but I don't have the time to
                                          play around with this stuff.

Some of us have work to do.

                                              Hi Karl,

Don't call a Devonian a Cornishman or he'll come after you with his swiss-army-club-with-a-nail-through-it.

                                              Hi Monty,

                                              1) do a google search for emoticons or smilies

                                              2) upload them to your hosting in 1) a short-name folder 2) short, descriptive titles

3)...because every time you want to use them you have to type the bugger's name in (insert image icon via full WYSIWYG editor)

I'm sure there's a nerd here who knows an easier way - please step forward, sir.

One could create an html page on their server with all of the images and links to those images on the page, and then all it would be is copy and paste.

Ah well... back to work for me
You are one smart guy. And really prolific by the flood of posts so quickly in succession. Wow.

Hehe... Yea, I was thinking about adding this feature over a WarriorPlus, where you just enter the number remaining and it automatically updates the image for you.

Perhaps this is still a good idea, though. Maybe I will do it anyway!

                  Hey Karl, that's a great idea, but that's a lot of text to place in a 80 x 80
square. I wonder how easy it will be to read.

Anyway, I'll give it a shot when I get the time. I'm not the best graphic
                  artist in the world.

This still needs to be posted in the WSO forum as a warning to those
                  running WSOs.

                  Hi Steven,

As usual you have beaten me to it - posting about this issue. It means that it would be alot harder to do price increase WSOs. Ah well, not the end of the world but a bit annoying.

            Steves right,

It's set on a time limit because I was working on 3 posts in different thread, and came back to the first one awhile later and couldn't edit the post. It was lik an hour or something.

            Hope this helps...

I didn't read all of the posts, so if someone else mentioned this, I apologize.

I believe the issue isn't with the number of edits. It has something to do with a vBulletin backend setting. I believe you can set a time limit on how long a post can be edited. They may have it set to 24 hours, a week... who knows... but that is probably what is happening with the WSO's no longer being editable.

              [edit]

DOH! I guess I should have at least read the last post.

I also tried to edit my WSO, and noticed the button was missing.

Although I do remember seeing the edit button shortly after I posted the WSO...so I'm not sure if it only stays around for a limited time or number of posts perhaps??

    Steven,
    Are you sure about this?

I am running a firesale and haven't had any issues (outside of the fact that we can no longer use a strikethrough)

Did you click the edit button within the edit frame?

I was just able to edit my salesletter to reflect the number now available....sure hope this feature won't be removed.

      Steven,
Here is a thought...did you provide a "Reason For Editing"?

I'm wondering if maybe the forum has a "flood control" feature set on.

Maybe you can only do so many edits without providing a reason? Who knows.

I just checked again and my edit button still seems to be working within the post.
