Wordpress Categories vs Tags Question

What's the deal with Wordpress (self hosted, not WP.com) tags and categories?

if I do one is there any benefit to doing the other?

I keep seeing a setting within both WP.com and self hosted that claims to convert your tags to categories.

I know that a http://yoursite.com/tag/keyword-you-are-shooting-for
shows up as a serp

similarly http://wordpress.com/tag/keyword-you-are-shooting-for
also shows up as a serp

(ditto with hubpages, not too sure about squidoo)

My question is this:

Do Wordpress categories also show up as a serp?

thanks

    David, hi,

It may help to think of Categories and Tags as a filing system.

For example you could have a category called Internet Marketing, into which all Internet MArketing related posts would go.

If you then wanted to write posts on Article Marketing and Social Marketing you could assign different tags to these posts - i.e. tag Article Marketing posts with article marketing.

Here's a post that describes how I use tags and categories on WordPress:

Using categories and tags in this way helps both readers and the search engines find their way around your site more easily

    Cheers,

    Martin.
