The Power of Subtraction

Its my fourth month of IM, and I am more than discouraged. I have worked every minute possible on this, studied hard and tried a bit of everything. To date Ive made about $20.00.
Is it me? Is everyone full of shit? Do people get lucky and find some off the wall niche that works for them?
Ive had my own business for over thirty years. The economy has ruined that and now approaching 60, I needed this to work.
Read on.
Article Marketing. Yes, the most effective is ezinearticles, no doubt. Researching good keywords with low competition and high search, about 20-30m a month.
Im fairly decent at the articles, and have written about fifty. I am able to get an article on ezinearticles in spots 1-3 organic. Ive done it a number of times. But funny thing. The keywords that look great, in organice spot one or two ( I have proof) only generated tops, 100 clicks. Sometimes less. How can this be with a search estimate of 20-30M.
One of the products i promoted was the dreaded "jamorama guitar system". Clickbank says the gravity is high, i play the guitar. I wrote convincing articles especially geared to those that want to learn fast. Through my articles and other methods, I sent over 300 targeted people to the jamorama site. Not one conversion.
I also backed these up with PPC. Again I picked keywords with low competition, searches above 20m. I built good campaigns based on good estimates, and got in actuality,2 clicks a day.
I have a twitter account, i have several plugins working that promote my friend count. I have over 2000 people following me on several accounts. I have a good CPA offer that only involves registering at a website. I get over 400, 500 or more hits a day to my site. When they hit my site, they see this free (trageted) offer, all they have to do is sign up at this interesting site.
I get one or two people out of 500 to sign up. Ive changed the ad repeatedly making it more interesting any way possible, nothing. One or two clicks.
One of the top sellers on clickbank is this Twitter program, i forget what its called. The punch line is something like"Would you like to get more followers and make money doing it?" I use tweetdeck and about one out of five people are making this same stupid tweet, which i highly doubt converts.

This is just a few of the things ive done in the last months. I have a website with over thirty affliliate offers arranged, like a shopping site, i have made my own ebook a how to on a popular subject, nothing......

Very discouraging to say the least. Its especially hard to see posts where people are saying its attitude and things like that. You feel like choking someone. I have to admit, i was a hell of alot more positive in the begining. In the begining of every attempt i think, this is going to work. Time after time, all of the things ive learned, just bottom out.

Any successful humanitarians out there?
The power of attraction just aint working here. And ive been working my ass off.

No - no one is "full of shit" and it probably isn't you. However, i'm wondering how long you been studying and applying online marketing strategies? I see you had a business for a good period of time, but the question is are you trying to run your online business the same as your brick and mortar business?

Another question I have is what are some of these websites you are trying to sell products off of? Based off what you said - I would assume one of these issues is the problem:

    1) Your Sales Letter is Weak (often an issue when someone is new to internet marketing and write it themselves)
    2) Your keyword targeting campaign is flawed and you are inviting the wrong type of traffic to your website
    3) Your Products are off

I would recommend posting some URLs so we can help determine why you are not selling instead of you talking about issues we have no access to.

First of all thanks for the reply as nasty as i may sound, i do appreciate replies.
Im not trying to run my business as my brick and mortar, totally different, with the exception that i take customers and their trust seriously.
Not sure what you mean by websites selling off of, Im using offers from clickbank, shareasale, maxbounty, linkshare etc. Im selling them off of my website which is a niche interest site with shopping, selling sort of on a review style with call to action.
In the case of the guitar program, I appealed to learning the guitar the easy way( a good number of searches), keywords as i say, greared towards learning the guitar easy, fast, low competition, high searches.
I think my sales letter was good, im a guitarist, i was able to make some good points. Hundreds of people went to the offer no conversion.
Products-this is complicated. I think most of clickbank products are terrible, but i go ahead realizing that there may be people that will respond out of desperation or whatever. But to me, if i get people to the offer and they wont buy, it is the product or their marketing.

I think this is your problem. If you can't really get behind something it is very difficult to sell it.

You have a lot of business experience, maybe you would be better off coming up with your own product to sell.

      I agree with Jon Steel.

You may be actually sending the wrong type of traffic to your website.
Also, Your salespage might not be that convincing.

Nonetheless, You should never think of giving up. Never feel discouraged because your campaigns are not bringing you the profits you hoped they would bring.

    Hotconcept-

Just out of curiosity, are you trying multiple niches so far or are you just sticking to one or two? Also, on your websites, can your prospects opt-in to an e-mail list where you are providing valuable content?

We'll try to help you out, but we need to some specifics - Thanks!

I am trying multiple niches but i havent given up on any of the ones ive tried. I constantly add to the older ones, rearrange, change it a bit.
I havent really done the opt in, no. I did have a newsletter submit opt in for awhile, probably about a month with very little response. I did not do free giveaways, or things like that. But, this CPA thing i did for musicians. Its a site for musical talent, theres a lot to get for free you just have to register. Ive sent over 450 people to the site, it looks pretty good, and they dont sign up.
I really think people are getting sick of some of this, free offer you just have to pay 5.00 shipping, free ebook just leave your email, etc etc. Most people i know avoid this stuff like the plague. Free Ipod, just complete three offers.
anyway, your right i havent done that much on the opt in.

    There's your answer.

You don't want to be trying a bit of everything, you need to be doing a LOT of one thing. Something that works.

    Hi Hot Concept,

The problem with the make money crowd is they make it sound so easy, right? Listen, first of all the clickbank gravity can be a little misleading as most of the time, the sales are coming from lists in which the list builder has built a good rapport with his readers. I have found that with article marketing, you best bet is to lead them to an opt-in form and then warm them up. Simply put, just arriving at a sales page once won't convert as high as someone who has been warmed up for the sale. Plus, you can sell them other products in the future. This isn't a slight on your marketing campaign but is something that most beginner marketers go through and either quit or carry on....

The next thing has to do with getting traffic. There are a series of strategies you can use but the easiest to find and crack is to take a look at your competitors on EZA. Reverse engineer their article and figure out what they are ranking for. You can actually see what kind of traffic the article is getting by scrolling down a bit on the page.

If their article is getting a lot of traffic and you can find the keyword(s) they are using that are bringing the traffic to their site, then you should be able to either write a similar article (in the event there aren't 2 EZA listings) OR find another property that can rank such as hubpages, article dashboard, ect.....

If you don't feel comfortable with building an opt-in list (which you should build a list but it can be a little time consuming if you do it the right way with autoresponder messages and actually give information and not just hard sell your list), then I would suggest purchasing a top level domain and redirecting directly to the sales page.

Finally, if the product isn't converting, you can always try another product. The name of the game is matching the right offer to the right "conversation". If the searcher gets to the article looking for free tips or advice, a hard sell without an opt-in is going to be very, very hard.

Just to use myself as an example. I did an article campaign recently that managed roughly 1,000 page views (with a 30% CTR) over 7 articles. I used the redirect method listed above. I got no sales the entire month.

I switched to a different product. Same scenario. I think I got one sale.

Both of the above products were digital products. I switched one more time to an actual shippable product. This time, my conversions went up. I made somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 sales that month.

So, in a nutshell, if something isn't working for you, you need to try something else. Test it and track it. If it still isn't working, you may be trying to sell something using the wrong keyword.

Hope this helps you a little.

    Hot concept,

I think you could really benefit from some Jay Abraham. Maybe it is because I am in the middle of one of his books right now, but I really think it would help. His books on marketing are amazing and he is a really great motivator. And don't get discourage, what works for one person may not work for you or your business. Just stick with it and it will pay off eventually. Good Luck!

    Hey hotconcept,

I believe what you need to be doing is to pick a niche
and stick with it untill you dominate it.
Jumping from one product to another every single month is
the "business opportunity seeker" mindset and you need
    to get rid of that.

It pays off to do some PPC testing to see if the keyword you've chosen actually brings in the traffic and conversion you're looking for. Otherwise, you might be doing work that will never bring you results.
