Actually Comments reflects user engagement of your blog. How your readers engage and interact with your blog content etc.

Hey Devilfish. Are you making sales from your amazon site yet? My conversions are still really low but as my sites thickens up I should start getting more targeted traffic.

    Hi There,

It depends on your objectives but having useful comments on your blog does contribute to the value of your posts and encourage interaction. It can be an effective way to engage your audience. If you are using Wordpress I suggest using some spam blocker for the spam comments - also make sure your comment signatures are no follow links- this can help you cut down on spam.

Comments can be good or bad. Some sites succeed with comments while others have decided to do away with them all together (Copyblogger).

Be sure to have a good spam filter in place, which is seems you have. Other choices could be third party systems such as Disqus.

I believe that most of the spam that you find when using the Akismet plugin is suggested by Akismet users. So, most of the comments that you think may seem ok, are really, spam.

It depends on what your objectives are, for your visitors.

It can make it look better, to some visitors, just because it makes it look a bit more "active", especially if the comments are dated, and people can see that they're up-to-date.

I've disabled all comments, on all of my own sites, because it's a nuisance to moderate them, and they don't make any difference to me anyway (I'm an affiliate marketer, so the primary purpose of all my sites is just to collect the visitors' email addresses anyway, because I make no money worth talking about, without that. I want valuable-looking content, so that people can see at a glance that it isn't "just a squeeze page", of course, but I don't want additional things detracting/distracting from the opt-in). Just my perspective.

Get a good spamblocker. If you are on WordPress, they are several plugins for this. Whenever anyone adds a relevant comment, it adds to the page and looks better to the search engines so I would encourage comments just for Seo purposes.

Use plugins that stops the spam comment or simply moderate them before they are posted.

If you have an affiliate site, then please disable the comments... it is a distraction from getting your visitors emails and making sales.

Just my own point of view - I have disabled the comments on my wordpress website.
