Niche Website vs. Niche App

I am a web developer looking to build a passive income for myself. However, I am split between two options I'm considering, because I do not have the time to pursue both at the same time.

Option 1: Build a free niche app (Android only, for starters) that satisfies a demand, and monetize it through ads/microtransactions

Option 2: Build a niche website, write blog/news articles for it, and monetize it through ads (what a lot of Warriors here do)

Personally, I am more interested in option 1, but the Play store is saturated with a crap ton of apps already, so making profit in such an unpredictable market may be a challenge. Option 2 seems like the more secure route, but it doesn't exactly follow my "passion".

So, which option do you think is generally more profitable, and which do you recommend me to chose?

Thanks.

If I were you I would totally go the app route. Mobile is definitely the way of the future! Build your first app and then promote the heck out of it.

If you can create an amazing app that goes viral, you will definitely create a nice source of "passive" income. And once you launch your first app and get a couple thousand downloads, you can start to create your next app.

The mobile market is absolutely huge, and only going to get bigger.

Go the app route and thank me later.

If you have no programming knowledge at all, it might be better to start off small and learn Python, or another "easy" language (although there's no rule saying you can't jump into Android programming first). Then, you can proceed into Java (language used to build Android apps) and learning the Android framework. A great (free) source for Android development is thenewboston: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...zG4r4k_zLKrnxl but if you're looking for high-quality (paid) courses, you might wanna check out Udemy.

I have past experience with Java, so I'm just brushing up on the Android framework.

EDIT: This only pertains to Android development. iOS apps are built in Objective C

Thanks for the encouraging words! You're right about the mobile market growing larger. I'm pretty certain I'll go the app route, I just want to give it a little more thought first.

Do you mind sharing your experience? Have you released any apps?

You say the App route seems to be saturated with tons of apps already, and this is true. But so is the web, saturated with way more websites covering almosts if not all niches. Both have a way of creating something brand new. If you like building apps more I would suggest to go that route. Be original.

I always recommend 'if you love it - build it'

There really is no reason not to go with your passion and build an app.

Stauration is just in your mind. There is no saturation at all.

Hardest thing is to go viral - so you either

    a) make something addictive and quick to play (FlappyBird) or
    b) something really useful (e.g. make people saving money) and make it easy to use (e.g. comparing prices of nearby gas stastions)

And then hustle you butt off where your crowd hangs out and promote it.
