I am assuming you are looking for screen capture type software.

For windows machine, camtasia is still the go to software though it is not the cheapest, $299 I think for a license.

For Macs, screenflow and/or camtasia will be the best route. They are cheap at $99 a piece.

If you are looking at things like Kinetic typography, VideomakerFX or Explaindio. And don't forget, you can create videos with powerpoint as well.

Almost every major video editing software has a free trial. IMO, there's no "one" video editing software program to use and own, as they have different strengths and weaknesses.

Also, you can often find older versions of video editing software on ebay at a big discount if you don't need every function. A while back I got an older version of Corel Studio for $11.

If I was on a tight budget, I'd go with PowerPoint 2013 first. It's free for the first month then $10 a month after that. If you can't make money before spending $30-40 dollars, you have other issues.

Also, if on a tight budget get ActivePresenter. It's free and does most of what Camtasia does. Check the usage license of the free version. Instead of paying $300 for Camtasia, which I also own and is good, I'd use ActivePresenter and spend the $300 on stock media. Access to lots of quality stock media you can use in your videos lets you make better videos more quickly.

I'd also consider spending some money on a video camera.

Great points. Only thing I would disagree with you is spending money on a camera. The quality coming out of smart phones is quite good. Instead I would spend the money on a good microphone to use with your smartphone (increases professional feel by 1000%). My new go to recommendation is the Zoom H4N. Use it as a shotgun, USB Mic or with a $25 lapel mic, a wireless lapel mic (sync in your video editor).

I agree that a mic is important, especially for screen capture videos and should have it on my list. A cheap $25 USB mic will do, in most cases, unless you need professional sound.

Audio is the most under-appreciated part of video making and marketing, IMO. I've made the point that radio/podcasts are still popular, but when was the last time you watched a silent movie?

Being willing and able to produce good content in audio form makes it much easy to create videos. With good audio content, the video just has to compliment the audio.

        PS. I don't have a smartphone.

Curious your recommendation on video camera. I am most likely going to do a Canon D70 for client work. I can't justify $3k for a 5D just for the body alone.

I'm not the best person to ask about this, as I don't do any client work. My most profitable Youtube videos were shot with a $70 Samsung. Since then, I've upgraded to a $140 Samsung with a 30x optical zoom I found on eBay.

Samsung has by far the best color of the El Cheapo cameras and I really like both of mine. And the good thing about not having clients is that I only have to please myself.

On the other hand, if you need very high quality video for something like shooting weddings or real estate, I'm really not qualified to give an opinion but have heard good things about Canon.

Thanks for the Samsung camera recommendation. My Sony point and shoot camera broke this past year when a younger relative picked it up by the lens.

I have been looking for a replacement every since but didn't want to get that exact camera as it put too much reds into the photos.

I have also heard good things about Canon. The photos produced by a Canon are really gorgeous but the price is also very high and might not be in some budgets. It just depends on what you are using the camera for. Maybe too over powered for a marketing video. Then again, some might say worthwhile.

Camtasia is a bit more expensive, but is worth the money.

    Fantastic piece of software.

Camtasia is the tool of choice for beginners,
but I personally prefer Sony Vegas (a bit more expensive than Camtasia, I think).
Don't forget that in the end, you get what you pay for ...

You may want to check out VideoPad: Video Editing Software. Download Free Video Movie Editor

I have all the big boy toys for editing videos, but I find myself going back to this A LOT lately. Very easy to use.

They have a free trial and it's only $30-$50 to purchase.

      Hey Mark,

Thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded the free version and it looks like a decent program.

One problem with it is how it handles animated gifs with transparent backgrounds. Not all video editing programs can import animated gifs with transparent backgrounds.

VideoPad does import them. But I couldn't find a way to reposting or resize them, or have them "loop".

For me, transparent animated gif capability is a feature I really like. It lets me take advantage of sites like AnimationFactory and PresenterMedia, as well as my own animated gif characters to make it much easier to create videos with moving images.

For anyone interested in using animated gifs in their videos, Vegas Studio uses them well, but takes a bit of work. Camtasia 7 (don't know about 8) will import animated gifs, but doesn't seem to read the transparent background and has other issues.

My two choices for video editors for use with animated gifs are PowerPoint and Proshow. PPT is really easy for using animated gifs while Proshow gives a bit better results. I like both PPT and Proshow for use with gif animations.

For an example of what I'm talking about, browse through www.AnimationFactory.com. With animations like these, just add them to a PPT slide and you have "instant video". PresenterMedia, AnimationFactory's "sister site" also has a bunch of animated gifs that are great for using in videos.

This is why if I had to do it all over again and was on a budget, I'd use the free version of ActivePresenter instead of paying for Camtasia. Then use the $300 I saved on Camtasia for subscriptions to VideoBlocks, AnimationFactory and PresenterMedia for access to stock media.

I was actually looking for a much cheaper video to Adobe Premiere which I understand is the best video editing software. Need a way to add effects, text and cut and snip videos already created.

Depending if you are on a Mac or PC can tell you which route to go. I have premier Pro CS6 and have yet to use it.

If you are on a Mac
I do most of my editing right within Screenflow which is all of $100. A step up would be Final Cut Pro.

          Windows
You can use Camtasia to edit as well but I would also check out Sony Movie Studio which is a cheaper version of Sony Vegas ( a powerful editing suite that I know several Wedding videographers use). $50

And as Kurt said above, see if you can get older versions on eBay. Just a super fast search showed Sony Vegas 9 at $80.

I've used Serif MoviePlus for many years. At £45 it's good value for money IMHO. HD Video Editing Software – MoviePlus X6 from Serif (not an affiliate link).

One of the best video editing softwares I use are Sony Vegas Pro (Easy learning curve) and Adobe After Effects.

Lightworks is also great for video editing and it's free!
