I am into this online marketing thing for 3 years now, started by earning nothing...then a part time income, and now a full time income (with part-time involvement) and I also have the knowledge to scale everything up and make more...

I also have a full time job, which I need to keep because working from home is not really my thing. I'm an introvert and I really need that human connection and team work...

But I also love music and I have this big dream of becoming a famous DJ and music producer. Since my time is limited, I have this big dilemma and here 3 options I thought about:

1. Should I follow my dreams, give up Online Marketing and put all of my free time and efforts into music? That means to give up the extra income and to rely just on my job (which is barely enough to survive from one month to another). If I fulfil that dream and make it, I could make much more money than comparing to IM, but there is no guarantee that it will EVER happen...

2. Should I let go of my dreams and go for the money? That means to keep my day job and to focus my free time and efforts into my online business, which will definitely grow in time, making me more money.

3. Or should I do both? That means to put in about 1 hour a day into online marketing and maybe 1 hour a day into music. I will do both things with half of heart and efforts, and it will take twice as long to succeed in either of them.

But at least I will have more money besides my job, and I will also follow my dream. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the help!

Follow the path God has laid out for you in life. Everyone has a purpose and a calling. Ask him to reveal it to you and he will.

I know you may be in a hard situation right now, but please don't rely on people on forums to tell you if you should give up careers ect... Its just not the most reliable place. Discuss it with your family and friends, those are the people who know you the best.

I am always asking myself what is my purpose in life, but I couldn't find an exact answer...

Family would never understand me...they never supported me with having an online business and will definitely not support me as a musician. They think that life is all about going to school and getting a good job, working for a mediocre income your entire life.

My friends are also regular people with small incomes and I don't know anyone that had a big dream or a big goal in life and achieved it. That's why I thought to ask here...

The only purpose human beings have is to reproduce and pass on their genes. That's it. Everything else is gravy. But maybe poster #2 knows something we don't know.

Anyway, if I were in your shoes, I would do this: work for a little longer on the IM business and save some money. I will also make a plan on how to get back to IM in case the music career fails. Then, and only then, I would give music a try. And I would definitely give music a try, even if just "for fun."

Nicki Minaj was waiting tables in a Red Lobster. Now her stated goal is to make 500 million dollars doing what she loves. No reason i know of why anyone else couldn't do something similar.

For sure, though, if you set yourself up to need to choose 1 of only 2 things, if you don't choose what your heart says, your life is going to suck. Not that I have any experience in that mind you. ;-)

The good news is that that the world is full of infinite do-overs. And if you don't like what you choose, you can choose again.

Figure out what you are passionate about and go after that. If you are not happy doing something than why continue with it? If music is your thing, than why not use internet marketing skills to expand your music presence? One thing is for sure, you either work toward your own dream, or you work for somebody else building there dream!

Good post. I would say go for whatever makes you happy. I understand what you mean as music being your passion as it is 1 of mine as well. I would say figure out what you really want to do though because nothing in life ever seems to work out unless you put your full heart & soul into it

    Hey there,
I´ve been an independent club promoter for the last 10 years, host clubnights regularly and founded this operation with my friends back then, so I got to know this business quite well. You said you make a full income with part time involvement? So... you got spare time, right? Then record mixes and produce sound in that time. Do you play gigs on a regular basis? From your picture I suppose you are in your mid-twenties 23, 24ish. If that´s the case, you really have time. Like in all creative fields it´s 20% talent and 80% hustling to be successfull. I´d say: integrate your internet marketing to that lifestyle. Just try to play some gigs, you know, if you´re good then you´ll become popular and get more gigs.

I also have a full time job, so spare time is limited. And if I would share it between online marketing, music and other activities it will be quite tough.

I'm 27 now and the thing is that I've never played a gig in my life. I've only produced music, and it's quite scary when I think about it. If i'll make it I will go straight from my bedroom to mix in front of hundreds of people

The thing is that internet marketing is already something familiar and that is definitely working...the music thing is something that seems very far away...

That notion really hit me - though I'm very content where I am at in my early 50's, if I think about it, I would make some very different choices if I were 'back' in my 20's as it relates to taking chances and risks.

There you go, I got you now. So, your first step on being a DJ is mixing music, and your second step is mixing music in front of an audiance. That´s no big deal. If you suck, the floor gets empty real quick and you might not get booked again. But if you do not suck, people are dancing, everyone will be happy and you will get more gigs. The key is to get gigs. For that you have to have mixes to show them to people. If I were you, I would record the shit out of my Tractor and get some sweet mixes to Youtube. That way you will have random people listening and commenting, but also you have something to show to bookers. Would not recommend ditching projects that make you money, just try to get out there and start playing sound in a bar or something. Maybe even host own events to get into the business. If you need some more insight on that, I´d be happy to provide you with hints and feedback. Sure you could tell me something about internet-marketing.

Haha! The original post is funny to me because.....

I've been DJing for about 19 years now. Played many gigs locally and in the surrounding areas for a few years. Produced for about 7-8 years and promoted and hosted my own club nights for 5-6 years on a very independent artist level. I had a full time job the whole time so I am by no means rock star status, but love the craft and was always studying it and have been lucky enough to have artists who were making a living from Djing show me the ropes!

I have put everything music related on pause so that I can learn internet marketing and really give it my all! Been trying to learn internet marketing for about 2 months now and just made my first $1.60 a few days ago! SO HYPED!

@ OP, I would totally be willing to trade knowledge, wisdom, tips, notes, etc. if you are down? LOL because I am trying to learn as much about internet marketing as humanly possible

I´m in my early 30´s and have got similar resentments, although I chose the risky way over the save path. The grass is always greener on the other side. We are lucky to live in this everchanging high-tech world where things move fast, for we have every chance to invent ourselves again and again, even if we are not 20 anymore. It´s the learning that becomes harder I heared (and witnessed myself). See, when I was 15 I inherited a five-digit amount from a great-uncle I never knew. As time went by, and I could have the money as I was 18, I spent it all between 18 and 23. On useful things like a new kitchen for my parents, and a new bike, and trips to beatiful places, but also on bitches, substances and booze. This year I realized something that really hit me hard. I could have become a pilot from that money.

We all have our choices, but one should be too hard with himself. We will never know how things would have been/ be now. I could have been a pilot and crashing. If I would still be with my first love, maybe I would be happy, maybe I would feel caged. Never know. What I know is that I could still be a pilot. Maybe not one for the big airlines, but a small cesna would be an option. Yeah, a bush pilot. That never occoured to me back then.

Learn to save and invest money first....never give up income. Learn the DJ music passion in your spare time as a therapeutic thing but don't do it full time unless you have a endless bank and savings account. Save Money First. Once you have enough money saved and you are doing music and the IM thing part time then perhaps music can overtake the other and earn more from music. Imagine tying in a successful artist and IM? Very foolish to give up money and a relatively stable income.

Follow your dreams , the worst feeling you can have when your older is regret. You don't want to look back and ask "what if", I'd say follow your passion and dreams.

You need time and funds to follow your dreams. So, go with option 2 - without a question. If you make more money, reinvest in your business, make more and you can retire from your day job. Then you have time and money to fullfill your dreams and start your DJ career )

Somehow if you can manage to integrate your career into your passion is the best of both worlds. My mom always used to say, "It's okay to have a J.O.B. to pay the bills in the mean time and do something that fills your soul."

While I disagree with her statement for a bit, you do have to eat and keep a roof over your head.

      Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Based on your opinions and my own personal thoughts, here are my conclusions:

      1. I will keep my day job, just to have all the living expenses covered

      2. I will continue to do Marketing Online, but instead of building assets that require more and more time and implication (like an authority website, an e-mail list or a big Facebook page), I will rather build passive sources of income. The type of "set it and forget it" like niche websites, Adsense websites and Youtube videos.

So this means that I can add an article or a video whenever I get the chance, and it's not necessary to do it every day.

      3. In the rest of my free time I will learn music theory, music production, DJ-ing etc. And I will also reinvest a big part of the IM income into music.

And yeah...I will definitely use my IM knowledge to promote the heck out of my music. Hehe That's really a big advantage over other talented musicians that just can't get out there...and it will also save me a lot of money that artists spend on PR.

You already know the answer. Go for what you love. You have already got some success in IM so you've got what it takes to work on your terms (no boss forcing you do work). It will be easy to do same as a DJ...

Also the I need people contact excuse is non sense. I also love spending time socializing. That's why I go out and meet people even though i've got an online business. Stop making excuses and find solutions.

    Cheers,

    C.G.

ONLY YOU can answer these. The fact you want others to answer this for you tells me you are not at the crossroads yet. If the Dr. gives you 12 months to live tomorrow you'll do it for sure. SO.

What's wrong with taking a huge risk? Is it better to have tried and failed or never to have tried at all?

Here i want to say that if you are not making money with IM then its only because its not your Dream Job/Task or something like that. People do better what the Enjoy and you can't be success if you don't enjoy the IM. So,my advice will be go for your dream. It could be your music or the IM. But,do what you love. Don't do anything what is not your passion.

    Hey everyone!

I thought it would be nice to keep you updated on this topic. I haven't made it yet, but I definitely made some progress:

    - at my job I managed to switch from full time to a 6 hours-per-day schedule, which really made a difference and allowed me to work more on music production

    - I've kept online marketing to a minimum, but still got some passive income, just enough to cover that loss from my job and something extra

    - I've also invested IM money into buying a music keyboard, a DJ mixer and various promotions for my music

    - I've doubled the number of fans and followers on Soundcloud, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube

    - I've used my marketing knowledge to promote the heck out of my music...having around 10k plays on the best tracks

    - released some tracks on a label and made around 100 sales (which means like 100$ per year...a fortune really!

    - but most important of all..I've imprved my music production skills. If you're a fan of Dance Music, feel free to check my latest remix of an Avicii song

I'll keep on going, and hopefully one year from now you'll be seeing me on stage at a festival near you
