What is the best way to start your own forum for your niche? Which forum interface is the best to use but still cost effective? How has your forum contributed/increased your IM business?

You can install forum from your hosting cpanel. You can isntall phpBB or bbPress. If you have Quickinstall (auto-installer) in cpanel, then you can easily install forum on your domain. You can also refer to QuickInstall resource by Hostgator.

The hardest part is kickstarting it. Services like postloop can help in the beginnings.

I first started out in the health and fitness niche. I became a moderator then admin for a YouTube fitness leader. He used to drive traffic to his forum that way, and via email. If you're looking for cost effective, then you may want to consider putting together a Facebook Group.

It makes sense this would be a good way to drive targeted traffic to a niche forum as there are many people on Youtube looking for fitness information and who might be interested in talking with others about that subject. This concept could likely apply to other niches.

I don't think forum's are worthwhile anymore. The new trend is Facebook Groups or Google Plus circles...

    Forums are so 2002.

I run a massisive forum and yes Facebook is taking its toll but we are long established and seen as an authority so I think we will be fine..

I use Vbulletin but xenforo I think is now the better solution along with a mobile application and then I use Facebook and SEO to drive traffic along with a number of other methods to drive it forward...

Forums are hard work and you are dealing with literally 1000's of wining people who don't realise you are on holiday or down the pub.... good luck but there are easier ways to earn a living

From everything I have read, people are saying steer clear of GoDaddy. If that's true, then the last thing you want to do is to build a forum on a GoDaddy based site that would require a long term commitment to make work.

Hosting is paramount for a forum. They're hard enough to grow as it is; slow hosting makes it impossible. Shop around for a dedicated server.

I can recommend using Simple Press Forum if you're hosting your site on Wordpress. We have a medium sized forum using this plugin and it works well. As mentioned by others, you do need to have fast hosting.

Facebook is definitely taking it's toll but for me it's more about your audience. Our forum is for a members only forum and it's in a niche where our target market is 99% over 40 and 70% over 60. The niche is also made of people who are not tech savvy and generally slower to take up new technology. That makes a forum far better for this audience than Facebook as not everyone has a Facebook account and those who do don't use it regularly and/or are not keen to join in conversations there because of bad publicity on security in the press.

You should always consider your audience and what their preferred medium will be before making your final decision.

    Hi,

If you are using WordPress, I would install the Simple Machines Forum (SMF) software. Very easy and intuitive to use. You will love it.

I'm not an affiliate by the way!

Yeah I really like Simple Machines Forum (SMF). I've just installed it after trying a few different free forum software.

As for actually starting a community. I'd also like to know more about. From what I can gather, it is tricky and a lot of hard work. I'm wondering myself if it is worth it for my site

Well my advice is too choose a good niche is very popular and easy to start forum like webmaster forums where you can easily find so many members and forum can be active after initial hard work.

For forum software, I would better use MyBB because of modification and easy to handle forum from powerful Admin panel. I had personal experience with it.
