What is the FIRST Rule of Internet Marketing???

Quick question ...

If a newbie was to ask you ...

... What is the FIRST rule of Internet Marketing?

How would you respond?

I would tell them that they every activity must build their list, preferably a list of buyers.

I am interested to know how you would answer??

Consistency and determination is rule #1!

The biggest reason most aspiring Internet marketers fail is because they give up on themselves and on IM without trying hard enough, way too soon.

So, rule #1 would look something like this:

    1. Remain consistent and determined to succeed, and you will.

I agree, consistency is very key, and in order to do this, you have to surround yourself with consistent people - otherwise it's pretty difficult.

Simply not true. If you tell this someone, you are just deceiving him.

      The correct affirmation is:

      1. Remain consistent and determined to succeed, and you may succeed. Don't, and you will not.

BernardR, you are right about building their list...

That is the number one and most important thing in internet marketing, or network marketing...

I didn't know this in the beginning...I wondered how some of the people on the leader boards were getting so many people in their down line so quick

They already had a list that they had built and nurtured, and by nurtured I mean provided value to consistently over time. People on their lists trusted them and joined programs under them because of the trust that had been established.

The first money a newbie needs to spend is on an auto responder, capture page builder, and solo ads.

A brand new newbie can begin providing value just by reading blogs and investing in ebooks and courses and sharing knowledge as they learn it.

Then, keep providing content in some form and stay consistent. To me, a newbie can't lose with this formula, if they believe in internet marketing at all.

Rule one: You don't get paid for doing nothing.

If one accepts this rule, then it stands to reason one would seek out the WHAT to do to get paid, eh?

There is the implication in this rule that a TRANSACTION occurs, a transaction is an exchange of value between two entities (often, two people).

Some do little and get paid little. Some offer commodities and compete with thousands of others, limiting their pay.

A few figure out who they want for a customer, perhaps one with money to spend and a high lifetime value. Then offer products and services to this "niche".

So, I would advise a person to figure out, FIRST THING, how they want to get paid, from whom and then go from there.

Focus on the niche and present them with solutions to problems they already have, not ones you think they should want.
Personally think this is backwards. You want to be promoting product people want and address their needs later. There are thousands of products people need that nobody wants and millions spent on products that people just want, look at Apple.

Also if you only focus on needs then you negate cult like buying groups like sci fi fans trekkers who want a shed load of stuff they don't need.

By telling them that they're asking the wrong question. You don't start a business by looking for trite platitudes - you'll just end up with countless variations of "Don't give up" or "Take action".

Newcomers should be told that internet marketing is much like any other type of marketing in that you need to come up with a marketable product or service and find a cost-effective means of telling prospective customers about it.

If there's any "rule" at all (and this applies to all potential businesses), it's first find and understand your market.

        Good answers...

I say, find a good niche, and provide a better customer experience than anyone else in that niche.

This comes in the form of providing more value and giving freely. I've noticed that the less stingy one becomes, the more they stand out from the crowd. This results in prosperity.

Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of people do, in fact, start a business looking for (or pitching) trite platitudes. Of course, it should be noticed that while you nailed "Don't give up" and "Take action", it seems that you forgot "Find somebody that knows what they are talking about" and "Gain knowledge".

Thankfully there are plenty of people on the WF to help fill in the gaps. To wit:

The first rule of internet marketing is to have access to the internet... LOL

After that, there is no universal first rule... depends on what you want to accomplish.

If a newbie asked me that question I'd enlighten them with this
undeniable age old truth... the successful people aren't the ones
with all the right answers, they're the ones with all the right questions.

That's dee...p! Not just a trite saying, as I'm sure most people will see it as. It's something that should be meditated on, dissected, examined, contemplated, then consistently practiced.

To ask "better" quality questions is the goal of the seriously successful, the thought leaders. Followers ignore that rule, like the plague. For example, look at any movie, T.V show or historical figure. In most cases the leader, hero or influencer always asked the best questions for the situation. Check it out.

Personally, I didn't get a breakthrough idea until I started practicing what you preached in your post. Appreciate the reminder. Excuse me while I hit the Thanks Button!

  • Although I agree with the comment made earlier by Orlando, which is commitment and dedication the real success online lies in finding one thing that works, and sticking to it like nothing else matters.

Most people bounce around from place to place and opportunity to opportunity, when the most important rule in my opinion for success online is stick to one thing until it works. Then once you find it working successfully, hire someone else to run it for you, then move on to something else.

This is a very similar way many of my offline clients have explained how they found success to me. And also how I find myself working with top tier high level corporate clients.

Stick to one thing until you find success, then expand as you see the need to do so.

The second rule about IM is not to talk about IM.

    Joking aside ...

The first rule is that you're going to suck in the beginning. If you believe that with a poor mindset and a very limited set of skills you're going to earn even $1000/month, good luck with that. But the more you work, the less you suck. You start in the pit, you work hard and then you get to the surface. Then you start building your ivory tower.

Accept that there simply isn't ONE wso or method that is going to make it happen for you. So stop going from method to method, in search of that magic one.

Wish someone had told me that 7 years ago when I stared in IM. Oh wait, they did, I just didn't listen, lol.

What created my breakthrough was when I finally got past my fears and decided to create and release my first product online.

Of course, before you do that, there is a whole lot you need to learn about IM, which takes me back to what many have already said here: Be Consistent.

Not as in be consistent by trying a ton of different methods. Focus on ONE method, and do not quit until you have achieved your goal with it. Or at least learned something valuable from it.

Do that enough and you'll be ready to launch your own products before you know it.

It's very simple, really --- find a mentor! I struggled on my own for years and spent thousands of dollars looking for the one thing that would make me rich and, of course, I failed miserably until, quite recently, I found a mentor --- someone to show me what to do and how to do it.

I think for some a mentor can be the way to go.

But just from my own experience, I think people starting out she hold off on a conventional Mentor.

I suggest a 'silent' Mentor so to speak.

When I started out, there were a couple of Blogs I would constantly visit and learn from some really successful people. They taught me a whole hell of a lot. It was invaluable for me !

So they were my Mentors . But it was not One on One Mentoring where I had to pay a fee for

My first rule in internet marketing:

BUILD A LIST. The money is the list. Trust me, its gonna be the most important asset you'll have. Why? It falls to 2 words: Protection and Promotion.

Protection- even with the changing google algorithm, you'd still be able to promote your product or services through your list.

Promotion- nothing builds a deeper relationship with your customers with email marketing.

Ok, you all have some good points, but you have missed the boat! The number 1 rule of Internet Marketing is to be honest and up front. Transparency is the most important thing because even though you may be building a list, monitizing your sites, using SEO and such, if you're not honest then none of that will work well for you.

We have all heard that honesty is the best policy. Well that also stands on the Internet as well. Even the scammers and con artists of Internet marketing build lists, do SEO and all that other stuff but because they're not honest, their businesses are in heaps of trouble, and these people have a very bad reputation online.

Therefore, honesty in your business is of the utmost importance. Without it, you might as well kiss your business goodbye because once a bad reputation starts to spread, it spreads like a wildfire and those are very hard to stop.

So if you don't want your reputation tarnished in any way, then it is best to start your business on honest ground instead of dabbling in black hat or gray hat techniques and strategies just to make a quick buck.

So like I said, honesty, sincerity, and transparency are the number 1 rule of IM.

You beat me to it, dbrwn.

I was going to say that rule #1 is to remember that there is a flesh and blood human on both sides of the transaction, so don't screw with peoples' lives for a bag of silver.

I would mention the Golden Rule, but some smartass would just answer with "whoever has the gold makes the rules."

#1 Rule to Business: Focus On The Customers Needs.

You cannot have a business without customers (Clients, visitors, whatever you want to call them).

It doesn't matter what Niche you're in, or what business model you're using. The customer should be your main concern. It's their problems you are solving. It's their needs you are attending. Without them, you're dead in the water.
