Do you think that this is good blog idea?

Hi there Warriors,

Doing some research and brainstorming on a new blog project and something just popped out of mind..

A Top 100/Top/Best of blog. The description may be a little vague right now, but it would essentially be a blog where I round up the best of a certain subject, niche, market, you name it. Each "best of" or "top 100" post would be about a new subject, niche, market, series, etc.

I hope you understand what I mean, like I said it sounds a little vague right now. But that's what you guys are for, to fill in the blanks!

Looking forward to your ideas and opinions!

-Karl

  • It's a good idea.

Also you can rate the blogs by popularity, age, google page rank, posts & comments qty, etc.etc.

I won't suggest it's flatly "not viable", but I think it would be monumentally difficult, and a really good way of stacking the deck against yourself. Here's my main point: you won't have any realistic targeting of subject-matter, and therefore of traffic, and therefore of monetization.

I think it pays to look at plans like this in terms of opportunity-cost. It's not really about whether it "can" work, or whether it's "possible". (It is possible, of course, but that doesn't matter - so are 1,000 other things). It's more about whether you'd be far better off doing something with targeting instead; whether you'd generate traffic more easily and more realistically, that way; whether you'd have a far higher probability of monetizing successfully, that way.

Apologies for sounding "negative" about it, Karl, but it's clearly and definitely not something I'd want to try to do, myself. Not without very substantial financial backing in place at the outset, anyway. It's a very, very long-term and very ambitious proposal. Just my perspective.

  • Yes, a very viable topic. Here is one company that does it:

Top Ten Reviews | Expert Product Reviews

    A huge and popular site.

They review and compare almost every product or service you can think of.
  • Top 100 posts about most subjects are usually popular.

That's gonna be a heck of a lot of work, though. I'm guessing close to 10 hours of research + writing for each post?

There are a lot of Top 10 sites, but not many top 100 sites, since nobody's willing to put in that much effort for every single piece of content they create.

If you're willing to do the work it would probably get a lot of links and search traffic if you stick with it long term.
  • If you can keep them in the same niche it may be possible but seems like you would be driving traffic to other sites? The problem with making any collection is that it may be information overload for most people and if it's not all the same subject, you really aren't getting targeted traffic
  • It's an idea that certainly can work.
I suggest you take the examples of others that are successful with that model, like Top Ten Reviews, tweak it to suit your own style, trim off any 'fat' you can (so you can cut out any unnecessary work), and think outside 'the box' to monetize it.

    • I realize that it's gonna be a lot of work if I ever decide to pursue the idea. Just wanted to see what you guys thought about the whole thing!

A follow up question: what kind of blogs do you find interesting?
  • There are already blogs that focus on toplists. You need a distinctive feature.
  • You are going to need a hefty subscription to a site like semrush to find all the data to back up your rankings.

    Worth taking into consideration
