Use print screens from Google Maps in E-book?

Hello fellow warrios!

I'm about to write a travel guidebook in which I will need some maps for things such as finding attractions, museums and restaurants.

Do you know if I can use print screens from Google Maps or would that be illeagal?

  • When they produce it and you copy it, unless the creator has specifically stated that you can use the image commercially, it is against copyright laws.

    Google dose have a print function, but I suspect without going through the complete TOS that unless you are willing to buy a license for using those that it is against the copyright.
  • Why don't you ask Google? People here have probably never looked in to their terms and conditions of usage.

  • Although there will likely be a debate about copyright and searching the Terms of Service, I have seen may businesses use an image grab from Google maps in their brochures, place mats, ebooks, etc.

    Google does not have any special agreement you need to enter into (other than their general ToS) to embed their maps in web pages and apps.

    I doubt there is any risk in using them the way you want.

    Of course I'll get lambasted for giving "legal advice". Which this isn't.

    • This is exactly what I think. I see these maps everywhere and I don't think Google cares about it. Ofc I will make sure that the Google logo is visible for the Ebook readers.

      I mean it's like when people sell a Photoshop Tutorial. They will have print screens attached which probably isn't 100% legal. On the other hand they promote one of Adobe's products for free.

  • I would probably consult your lawyer on this matter to be safe. I personally wouldn't do it without direct permission from Google. If you still insist on using Google Maps I would make it clear where you got the map from and give them credit below the picture.

    Take at the look at the Google permissions page for Google Maps and Google Earth where almost all uses are covered.

  • Shouldn't be an issue. How about using something like Wikimapia to be on the safer side?
