Food business - offline or online marketing?

Hello everyone! I am just pooling marketing ideas for my organic food business, as I’m relatively new in this field. I basically sell fine locally and organically grown food, and people can reach us either in store or though our website. Since there’s an e-commerce aspect to the business, I think it’s appropriate to market online. However, I might also consider offline advertising for a more personal approach. Online, I am actually thinking of display and search ads, while offline, I might do direct mailing and placement of print ads in community papers. What do you think of this marketing mix?

I think you can market both on and off line.

Yes Google Adwords is a very good option. Just know that if you haven't ever done PPC that there is a learning curve.

You want to get you ad in front of the 'right' keywords while keeping your costs down.

Here is a link to Perry Marshall's Site where he offers a $10 Ebook that will help you to learn how to do PPC on Google right: Download "The Definitive Guide to Google AdWords"!

Off line ads like what you said above...newspapers, yellow pages etc.

The largest costs of most business is advertising. But when enough people are 'aware' of your business, the costs will come down.

I like how clean your website is - nice!

I'll second Rory - go with both, off and online marketing.

Just make sure you're advertising where your target audience is!

    • Hi

We agree with Rory and Nate too.

Any offline business is "expected" by it's customers to also have an online presence that is meaningful.

      Do both and prosper.

For a locally based business like yours, very specific targeted marketing is the answer, regardless of whether you do it online or off.

I would concentrate on geo-based consumer marketing since your product is perishable and your business is built around local home delivery. You're not shipping too far out of area so that would suggest that many of the usual marketing tactics and approaches you will find here at the WF are not going to really be applicable to your marketing campaigns.

Certainly, both online and offline approaches can work. The more important consideration is how you go about targeting leads that want your service and are within your service area.

I would definitely approach farmer's markets and even local grocery stores about selling your organic goods. Local newspapers, health and fitness related businesses, and "nickle ads" type pulp shopping booklets may also prove profitable.

As with any new marketing source . . . test and track your results, refine your offer, then scale up when you have profitable campaigns.

        Good luck in your business.

  • Well, according to my personal opinion, you should have to prefer the online advertising strategies rather than offline. Because, with online strategies, you would get a great profit and margin on your products in a lesser time. But, it is also important that you have to select a right ecommerce platform for getting the best service.
