Why Will I Fail Online?

When looking around online marketing, it seems everyone wants to try in one way or another to make money online. I'm no different, I love the idea of working from home but I've been told that 95% of people fail online.

Can you let me know Why I will Fail Online?

Share you failure stories as well as you your success stories. Everyone starts somewhere and we have all failed at one time or another.

For two main reasons, perhaps, if you do ...

First, you have only pretty limited experience of it (I'm guessing that from your question and low post-count, though your "joining-date" surprises me, and of course I might be wrong!), but are already involving yourself with IM-related and/or MMO-related niches, and that's the single commonest mistake that aspiring marketers make and the single commonest overall reason for their failures.

Secondly (and unlike the previous point, there's no fault of your own, here), because when you're starting off, you have the least judgment and experience and it's hardest to judge by whom to be advised. Like other aspiring marketers, you're surrounded by misinformation (that's obvious, isn't it? If 95% of people "fail", as you mention, then an awful lot of the "information" they provide is likely to be misguided nonsense, too, clearly?), and much of it - inaccurate and mistaken though it is - will come to seem so "obvious" to you that it will lead you astray. We've all been there, to some extent. Here's my embarrassing story.

I think that the biggest reason why the great majority of people fail in this industry is because of hanging on to a 'Mindset' that doesn't serve them.

Another reason why people fail is because many new marketers will try too many different things [without] mastering 'one'.

And the reason we try so many different things as new marketers is goes back to having a poor mindset.

I 'struggled' for years because I had a poor mindset.

I believed that success was hard for me to acquire. It was only when I realized that I was just as good as anyone else who was having success that I started seeing results personally.

      Rory is absolutely correct!

It's all about your mind set. "If you think you can, then you can. If you think you can't you are also Right".

People think that making money online will be instant and they will live the life they always imagined. Although the later is true, It's not a fact of working smarter than harder. Online you have to work Smart and Hard!

People fail because they do not feel comfortable dedicating their time and money into an online business. My advice is to go on amazon and find yourself a few mindset books. My favorite is "The Fast Lane Millionaire" by MJ DeMarco.

      Good Luck

    Nonsense.

People fail as a result of looking for the magic button and not taking action for themselves, no focus and as a result they give up. You just have to decide what you want to do, and research as much as you can about it and then do it.

Who says you are going to fail? Just don't do nothing, you can do it man. Anyone who tells you, you can't can suck eggs.

And don't believe everything you read especially on here. All it takes is some fortitude, you will have struggles, you will have to figure things out, you will need to not have all of your eggs in one basket as far as traffic etc.

I don't look at things that don't work as failures I look at them as knowledge to help me not make the mistake again. My very first try I made 97.00 but I never sold another, so because it didn't work like I wanted, I figured out that wasn't the best way to do it.

If you are determined to succeed no one can stand in your way and nothing can hinder you. Put your head down and run with the ball.

    Forget the nonsense.

I did wonder for a moment, but I wasn't sure at all.

If you mean that it's "bogus" just because the OP has been a member since 2008, I don't think that necessarily follows.

But if you know something else, that I don't, then "fair play" to you.

It happens to the best, WD. All we can really do is take what the OP says as the literal truth in that moment. We have probably all read something somewhere at sometime that tells us the best way to find out what people need in a product is to ask a question in a forum.

      Not a bad strategy; marketingwise.

  • experience, understanding and knowledge.

In my experience. The process is simple but just because it is simple, doesn't make it easy to get there.

    Where people fail
    1. Project Hoping (I did this)
Every idea you come up with, you have to look at it as a year+ long commitment. Even if it isn't going to take that long to profit from. It may take 3 weeks depending on the scale of the project. Regardless, when you decide on an idea. Focus on nothing else but that project. Remember the goal is to establish a brand. You cant do that in a short period of time. Now granted, you can always be investing in 3 projects at a time. what's what I do, but if you have zero experience. I suggest you stick with 1 and a small niche as well just to get your feet wet. Remember, just get your feet wet!

    2. Shiny Object Syndrome
Here's a little exercise, go to JVZoo and click on all of the hottest products right now and tell me if you get anxiety to want to buy them. One of the hardest things for new comers to overcome is "SOS". The secret.......look past the sales page. The goal of it is to make you want to buy it. If you look at a product because it was promoted to you, don't buy it because it isn't going to help you. You should only always buy products that your looking for. For instance, I just bought a copy writing course BECAUSE I NEEDED IT but do you thing the sales page didn't try and sell me? of course it did, did I pay attention to it NO. What I looked for was it's table of content. What is it going to teach me? if the sales page doesn't cover that, then they are lying and they are only trying to get your money.

    3. You're Not Going To Get Rich in a Few Months
It really does take time. The way I see it. Each project I launch is a private stock, the more you have, the more you make. You can obviously always come up with a million dollar idea but that's not always the case. There is only one of me. So i'm stuck launching 1 project a month, researching the other and managing the rest.

Primarily, the reasons people fail is the lack of focus and not committing themselves to to long term success. It's all about the long term process, because realistically that's how long it takes to succeed online.
    - launch 1 project
    - make it awesome

People fail online for the same reasons why people fail everywhere else in life.

It is more about character flaws than anything else. And that is ...

    1) Lack of focus.
    2) Lack of consistent effort.
    3) Lack of proper direction.
    4) Low tolerance to risk.
    5) Being influenced by others in a negative manner too easily.
    6) Being drunk by success, being depressed by failure.

That's the same way to fail in a marriage, offline business, job (sometimes) and generally, in life.

Because you are looking towards the future as 95% of failing of course. Hell of a mindset.

The vast majority of marketers fail online because they do not put out the effort required that proves to be successful for *them*.

Case in point. 8 days ago I reminded a group of marketers that the Super Bowl was coming and here's a great product idea you can use to profit from it.

5 days ago guess how many people actually took my advice?

    1.

    And that one was me.

I got the buy button out there. I'm now duplicating that buy button to other platforms to appeal to other vendors. Plus I just put up a new buy button for a completely different product this morning.

    See....

Nobody will do the work *for* you *except* you.

And that's why 95% of marketers fail.

Because they don't put in the work.

Hey EDSON... ( WHAT A GREAT QUESTION HOPE THIS HELPS YOU A LITTLE ;>) )

Being 60 has a way to build, teach life lessons and create wisdom along the way. I have done several offline businesses some I FAILED AT and some I SUCCEEDED AT !

All the responses to your question so far ... add up to reasons why you and others will FAIL or SUCCEED !

My Top 16 Success Tips & Lessons Learned:

    1) Focus on one business when getting started and not 3 or 4 of them, how can you focus and make one business grow if you are spread out too thin, I remember the advice that Freddy my best friends brother told me once and when I took that years ago I succeeded in my 1st MLM and actually created residual income that lasted for 2 straight years and dropped off because of internal problems with the company other wise my residual would have lasted till now or at least much longer...LOVE RESIDUAL INCOME !

    2) Outsourcing as much as you can as soon as possible, you see if you can work at a job and pay someone else to take care of things that are not that important then trying to learn your self and doing yourself, you are better off paying off someone else to do these things and keeping cash flow coming in and focusing on more important parts of your business

    3) If you can afford it....Get yourself a life coach/business coach as soon as possible if you can afford one, it will pay you high dividends EDSON ! I have personally used coaches and I myself also was a COACH / TRAINER !

One of the secrets in MLM is that most people just join under anyone trying to recruit them, I do it differently I interview potential coaches and business partners before i signup under anyone that tried to recruit me and if they did not pass my interview I did not make them my business partner and keep looking till I find someone that I felt would be a good reliable coach / business partner with experience. A good coach will help put you into PROFIT QUICKER / SAVE YOU TIME & MONEY / AVOID COSTLY MISTAKES etccccc

Note -- SO DO SAME FOR YOUR ONLINE COACH INTERVIEW THEM AS WELL TO FIND THE RIGHT ONE

    4) Review your options always on everything you are considering getting into online and pros and cons of each of the options, but write them down, put it safely away and then use this to make the best decision you can, and then move forward and take action

    5) Review your progress on a quarterly basis and then make adjustment as needed on those quarterly reviews

    6) BEST WAY TO START IMO ---- " If you do not have money to invest, you are better off to not start and just buy some products to study till you can save some money then start "... first if you are willing to do so, you will be better off, because you will have money to invest in a coach and money to use paid traffic to drive traffic to your online offers will allowing you to build your buyers list and find out what works and does not work faster, therefore putting you into profit quicker instead of wasting alot of time like many others have done online and failed because of it !

    7) Be TENACIOUS never giving up no matter what

    8) FAIL TO SUCCEED ( what do i mean by this...the concept is so simple that it eludes many people starting a business from home. what it means is --- Use failure to your advantage, embrace it as it is your ALLY and not your ENEMY for it speaks to you each time you FAIL and whispers in your ear what you have done wrong and now you try things differently again till you do SUCCEED ---- SO FAIL FAST AND HARD TO SUCCEED FASTER )

    9) Select one online business model and not try to do several online business models just FOCUS and put all your heart to make that one work first, if at some point you just do not want any more to stick to it, then don't start another one and do both now because your new one will suffer because you have just spread yourself too thin

    10) Buy only products that will help you build your business and succeed online and not anything else that GLITTERS and you place on your hard drive to collect dust from or get you more confused then you are already

    11) Set small attainable weekly/monthly/yearly goals ...you need to set goals to help drive you but make them realistically like I will make my first sale by 90 DAYS and write a plan how you will get there and review that plan at end of 90 days and why did u get there and not get there

    12) Its hard to keep motivated for most people, if you can join a internet marketing mentoring club and a free meetup offline local group in your area, you can use each other to learn from and keep each other motivated at the least because one of the problems you will have is too keep motivated when you do not see any money coming in for a long time and no one there to say to you hey EDSON ...keep going don't give up, your success may be right around the corner so why quit now. To find a MEETUP INTERNET MARKETING GROUP in your area google MEETUP INTERNET MARKETING SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA to find meetup meetings in your home town

    13) CAN'T WAIT AND NO MONEY - Then don't but at least adopt a free traffic generation mmo system that works to make money online from someone reputable that has done it,

    14) AFFORDABLE COACHING - For those with low budgets

LYNN TERRY at http://www.clicknewz.com/hands-on-help/ she is someone that i learned from alot and WOW did she help me with all of my questions back then when i was a member ( THANK U LYNN TERRY ;>) for when I was trying to learn how to market my offline business online and decided to master SEO as my #1 free traffic strategy to drive traffic to generate leads for my brothers clown business which he got 7 to 14 calls a day because of my doing WHITE HAT SEO to his site and my own business.

TERRY DEAN at http://monthlymentorclub.com/ I was a member of this for a year as well and learned alot from terry and bought some of his products as well, this is a monthly offline newsletter you receive in your home mail box ....... AWESOME GUY

    15) Follow the rules of this forum period, Don't get into arguments with others here on this forum, as some will outright insult you and try to draw you into a fight, don't do that you can end up getting kicked off this forum and it is not worth it trust me on that one, respectfully withdraw from any confrontations with anyone here and just use this forum to help you get where you going .......if you do not take this advice and get kicked off this forum you will regret this one ALWAYS !

    16) Write a Things To Do List Daily with allotted times to each task and only do those things and nothing else for that day to maximize production and time management, and if you take this one advice it will pay off nicely because you won't be all over the place

People think they will find a magic push button formula for making money online which is not the case. Pick one course of action/strategy and FOCUS on it until you master it. If you start jumping from one thing to another you will get nowhere.

Spend some time learning and studying everything involved with this industry and then create a roadmap of specific actions.

Enjoy it, because if you find yourself getting frustrated with failures you will quit and join the 95% of people who fail (if those are real numbers).

Don't be mediocre and try to be the best at what you do, the best content, the best design, the best support, the best everything. Don't copy other people stlyes but emulate their success.

    A specific strategy?

    - Find an industry you want to serve (something you might enjoy or something were people spend money)
    - Find a niche inside that industry so that you can differentiate yourself.
    - Create a high quality blog doing keyword research.
    - Become an authority by publishing killer content once a month.
    - Spend 80% of your time promoting your content and only 20% writing it.
    - Write long high quality unique articles.
    - Learn SEO
    - Monetize with affiliate marketing or your own product.
    - MAKE CONNECTIONS.

Like I said, it's not overnight, at least it wasn't for me.

Again, have fun and don't look down.

Ok first let me qualify myself by saying I make my entire living online and have for several years. It bought my house, my car, both of my motorcycles, and the laptop Im typing this on.

I have seen many people fail here are the reasons I have identified:

#1) Lack of action, this is a job, you have to work. Regardless of what anyone tells you, IM is not some magical cash machine.

    2) See #1

Thats basically what it boils down to, people want to get rich in their sleep, Guess what, its not going to happen. IM is being a self employed person, and just like any self employed person you need to work your tail off (at least at first)

From my experience with teaching people. Many will treat it like a hobby and not a business. Many will also act like it is purchasing a lotto ticket. That is they try a few things that work that is they make a few bucks and do not follow through and build. Many will give up 3 weeks to 3 months into the game even with some income showing. No matter how much it was explained to them before starting the green money blinders worked too well. The time put in does not equal the rewards up front once reality set in for the shortsighted. In other words they treat it like it is trading hours for dollars or a real job and most can not grasp the concept of build to create residual income. They also often lacked a game plan, an outline or a business plan or even a scratchpad full of ideas and goals. They went into it blind.

If one wants to take it seriously they should also get legit when they start. EIN/SS a business license, and register with your state taxing entity and a bookkeeping system such a QuickBooks, Outright or Freshbooks or something similar. Even a spreadsheet will work when starting out.

Getting legit can also create some motivation or sense of an outcome and accomplishment.

    You WON'T Edson, I promise

Know why you want to make money online and tie that reason into freeing yourself and your audience.

I went from: broke, depressed security guard in NJ to the Blogging from Paradise guy.

I am moving to Bali for 4 - or more - months in a few days, doing a house sit honeymoon. I've lived in Fiji as a pro blogger and Thailand and hell, all over the world, and I gotta say wanting to be free more than I loved Thai snacks - and I *really* love Thai snacks - was the driver that pushed me, until, the driver pulled me. Not I'm pulled by my intuition throughout much of the day and success finds me more easily, because I'm blogging to free me, and to free my readers, and I ain't really thinking about that paper.

Onward and upward! Free yourself and your audience, and make that your primary intent, and your creative juices will really flow....and you won't fail.

95% Fail due to lack of focus and commitment! If you count yourself in the 95% you have already failed.

Because of the nature of IM it is easy to get distracted (emails, facebook, forums, that latest news feed.) Staying focused and committed to your plan is the key. Set yearly goals that will stretch you, but break them down into monthly, weekly, daily and even hourly goals. And celebrate every time you complete a goal no matter how small it may seem!

Most importantly "Never, Ever count yourself in the 95%."

There's no way I can tell you why you will fail online, but I can run a few possibilities past you...
Maybe the easiest way is to just list some of the biggest things that prevent people from ever really getting anywhere. So here goes...my top 5:

    1) Choose a niche that you think will make a bunch of money, but that you are not really very interested in.

    2) Get subscribed to a bunch of different marketers lists, and spend hours every day going through your emails from them, instead of buying what you wanted from them, and then unsubscribing.

    3) Have no clear plan-of-attack from the beginning, and get distracted by every new promise of "This will make you rich!" a.k.a. Shiny Object Syndrome.

    4) Try to do everything by yourself.

    5) Do not build and cultivate a list that you can market to.

Can you define what is meant by failing? Failing to make a full-time income? failing to make several hundred dollars online per month?

The majority do earn some income through Adsense or writing for others. Although the amount could be quite low from tens to few hundreds per month.

I don't think everyone necessarily want to work full-time in IM. For those that do, I don't think the failure rate is as high as 95%.

Maybe you should be asking how you can be in that special 5% that makes it.
    Like Brett mentioned,

IM is being a self employed person, and just like any self employed person you need to work your tail off (at least at first)
You have to be a highly motivated self-starter. That's something you either have or you don't. You can't "learn" it.

Wow - as a newbie myself, there are all the clues to avoid failure here that anyone could want. Personally I take time to read all these posts as there are some really valuable lessons through this thread , but here lies another clue - some people just dive in with the bit of knowledge they have, and then quit as soon as that doesn't pan out and try another idea.....
If like me, you are still finding your way around the IM world, then it does take time to gain the experience to be able to sort the sound ideas from the rubbish.
My embarrassment of the past was trying product after product with no support, this was a very lonely journey which put me in a poor frame of mind. The light finally was finally switched on after taking clues from threads like this one and finding a mentor and one sound plan to run with.

Can you let me know Why I will Fail Online?

Share you failure stories as well as you your success stories. Everyone starts somewhere and we have all failed at one time or another.
I want to tell something really real.....95% of people are not failing online, they make $100/month...that means someone do $0 others $300/month.

When you start every kind of job you have to learn...it's like building a skyscraper!

You'll have to make good foundation.Yes? you know the answer!

Do you want to know that you will sleep in a hotel that have foundation? Yes or No?

So 95%(other say 97%) of people make less then $100 monthly because they learn something, but isn't near enough and normally they do that other " so called amazing marketer" told them to do.....

I spent $5000 in crap learning products to find a good Menthor! You can talk about "fail" or "losing" money, but there is always time to find a good Menthor.

Obviously a good Menthor is in the 1% of top income online marketer and also a really good Teacher(there are people that are really good at what they do , but really bad in teaching it!).

The first step for you is to learn how to start and where you are!

    Ex.
    1. You are going to be a online marketer because you have an amazing product that you want to promote!

    2. You don't have any product to promote and you have to find something

    3. You want to promote yourself as an artist, a dentist or something like this.

Questions like where you are help you knowing where you are going and how you start is important also.....

Ex: You are in NY and you want to go to L.A(where you want to go). Then you choose car, airplane, bycicle or crawling

I also believe many people fail, when trying to make money online. But failing is part of success, because when you fail, you have 2 choices: understand where you went wrong or, just give up and find another 9 to 5 job.

Also, it depends what you understand by failing... like derekwong mentioned, failing is a relative term.

This is just a little confusing to see a Member here since 2008 asking questions like this.

It's been 7 years now and you are asking the question whether or not you will fail ?

Or are you using some kind of metaphor to speak on others' behalves ?

One of my biggest mistakes starting out was not having a solid foundation. In other words, my business was relying on mostly SEO traffic and it got wiped out overnight by a Google update.

Don't be pulled into those push button loophole methods. They may provide you with some income for a period of time, but ultimately will fail and you will have to start from square one.

Instead, focus on giving away as much value as you can to your target audience and continuously educate yourself in your niche and the money will follow long term.

Although the "95 %" figure seems more like a saying as opposed to an actual statistic, I found my IM success all to be based upon simply taking action upon a well informed and well researched information and failures solely based upon failure of action or failure researching properly.

Internet marketing although, not fool proof, is a sense a science. You find a demographic, you see what appeals to that demographic, and present a product or tool that the demographic can use.

Although varying, I've never had 0 success when following this model, the only time I've seen 0 success or a "fail" is when I don't do the correct research.

Lets get one thing straight, I've been working online sense 2008. Now that does not mean I have been successful the entire time. For the first several years I had my fair share of struggles and even thought about giving up.

Now in 2015, I'm happy to say I'm working full time online but even now I still have products that fail but that does not make me a complete failure. I have had success online and I will continue to grow my success with Taking Action.

I started this thread to have fellow marketers open up and talk about how and why they failed online or if they still do and why they think that is. This is a great community and we can all help each other.

From my personal experience, I started having online success when I Took Action! I personally feel that is the biggest missing key to online failure. Now I'm not talking about buying every online product known to man and putting them into Action but actually finding a few things I enjoy doing and concentrated on those things.

Thread title ' Why Will I Fail Online?"

      Your post
"When looking around online marketing, it seems everyone wants to try in one way or another to make money online. I'm no different, I love the idea of working from home but I've been told that 95% of people fail online.

Sure seems like it is for newbies to me Edson

there are much better ways as I said above, but please don't portray it like it was for some actual reason other than sig views.
If it really was about that, you would have declared your own failures and then how you overcame them. and being transparent and wanting to help as you are saying, you would declare you now make money and do o.k.

      Sorry, I don't buy it.

      Best,
      -WD
Edited to add: There is a lot of good information posted in here. It just would have been better to start things off right
I mean it is not a bad thing to do that Edson it is just that I fell for it, thinking you needed to be encouraged and then find out you aren't failing at all. That just made me feel stupid. Probably not the effect you were wanting
