Weird: Illegal to Link to the Warrior Forum

Says so right in the current Warrior Forum's terms: everyone is prohibited from

engaging in unauthorized framing of or linking to the Website
More fun ...

You cannot write posts with an "excessive" amount of CAPITAL LETTERS.

You cannot use anything on the forum to "contact" any user, unless they first explicitly consent.

You cannot access the forum via a proxy.

You cannot use the forum as part of any effort to compete with Warrior Forum. Sorry W+ and JVZoo, and their affiliates.

You cannot use the forum as part of any effort to provide services as a service bureau. What? Maybe it's an Australian legal term of art. Wikipedia says a service bureau is a business providing services for a fee. Possibilities? You cannot broker WSOs. Maybe you cannot include paid services in a sig.

    Where are these rules Brian?

I just looked at the updated one(apparently) I don't see that, is this another update?
If so where are they located?
    Thanks

Very happy to hear about those two. Those look excellent rules.

Some of the others seem to require some "interpretation", perhaps?

Apparently, no squeeze pages allowed in signatures either

Had my current one deleted twice already - the first time because it's an affiliate link... ??

I'm starting to find less and less reasons to come here since the new owners took over...

Ok, this was new to me...No squeeze pages, huh?

Are we allowed to have lead capture pages in our signatures? And by that I mean a page with content that leads to a field where a visitor can input name and email.

Well, my squeeze page re-directs people to an affiliate offer AFTER they opt in.

Check the source code for ANY squeeze page - they'll usually have a re-direct for once users opt in.

They said I was cloaking and doing it again could get me 'in trouble'

I had to literally explain how a squeeze page works to the mod(s) that was/were deleting my signature...

Then you were breaking the rules then.
Affiliate re-directs have never been allowed here:

From the rules in the sticky:

Due to certain people trying to find a loophole I needed to add yet another edit. Please do not try to get around these rules by getting your own domain name and simply redirecting it to an affiliate program. You Will Be Removed From Here When Caught.

Read what I wrote again - it's NOT a re-direct. You're re-directed once you opt IN - which is how squeeze pages work

Also, the mods ok'ed it for me now - just haven't re-added it yet

Affiliate re-directs were never allowed, with or without an optin.

Well now that's just confusing. I was assuming that "cloaking" referred to putting the affiliate offer after the opt-in, which would be a redirect to, instead of a thank you page, the affiliate offer.

But you say that it was approved for you? I honestly don't know what the rules specifically allow/prohibit in terms of lead capture pages, then.

Cloaking? It's just a guess, but perhaps it's because you're not redirecting to your own product. I know linking out to an obvious affiliate page is a big no-no, so the mere usage of an affiliate offer after your opt-in page caused the trouble for you.

If i understand your situation correctly then using a squeeze page/lead capture page in our sigs isn't a problem as long as it redirects to our own products/non-affiliate pages. If that's the case we aren't as bad off as I thought lol

    Thanks James,

I must be missing something I don't see these things Brian mentions. Like if they update the rules it should be posted as "update to rules" LOL

I will have to read it all through I guess I don't immediately see it

thanks for the link James I appreciate it

    Oh.....
Well, there ya go, you can't compete with the forum using it's own services.
YIKES! Is that what it means Brian you can't now be an affiliate or use jvzoo or w+ in a wso?
man I would have totally missed this, it should definitely be made known if things get changed.

Just more crap mixed with some stuff that makes sense. Same old song from the new owners IMO

Hopefully, they start getting more clear on what they want or are trying to do, or maybe just outright say what they are trying to turn this place into. Sadly, we'll probably just keep encountering more head-scratching-worthy actions and rules, some of which their employees don't even understand or know how to enforce.

Sigh... I really hope this place gets better before it gets any worse

I hear you. I'm closer than ever before to giving up that hope, to be honest.

The forum seems full of people making hundreds of ridiculous, fatuous, pointless one-line posts, talking utter nonsense, for the sake of exposing their signature-files. And the moderators are apparently either unwilling or unable (they say "unable" and I think that's probably right) to do anything about it at all.

The resulting appearance (which is what matters, of course) is that the current discussions are full of junk and there's not much left of value in the forum, that anyone can actually find. I'm not surprised the traffic's at an all-time low.

Yeah, how about taking care of the members that use the forum? I mean is it so tough to set a page so it pops up when you login "Update to -whatever has been updated" Facebook does it through a notification, JVZOO does it through a page that comes up. It is not a lot to ask, or maybe I am just spoiled

How can anyone be expected to abide if they don't know, and shouldn't rules/Terms of service be legally worded?

Like how do you enforce some of these things? You can't link to the forum? So google has violated the terms. Makes no sense imo

I can only speak for myself but I estimate I will not be spending $500 that was in the plan several months ago. No more WSOs or classified ad bumps from this little Black duck!!

They think they are doing good but I think they are pounding huge nails in their coffin. Look at the "quality" of the main forum in the last months. Soon they will have to change the name to "The Non-T1 Newbie Forum."

good to hear. being a mod is not easy and it is very subjective.

imagine the same thread started with rays exact same sig by someone with 7 posts. lots of us would jump on them for self promotion.

but many of us here know ray (or know of him via wf) and realize he contributes solid info here all the time. I have no doubt in my mind ray wasn't looking for sig clicks, but i can see how some might have interpreted it that way.

as for the topic of the thread....its just business as usually these days pretty much. you write your TOS as broad as possible so you can selectively enforce the "rules" as you see fit.

this is somewhat like what the web hosts do with their "unlimited" plans.

that being said, something being in a TOS doesnt mean its legally enforceable. Saying you are not responsible in a TOS doesnt necessarily remove your legal responsibility.

At least the mods are taking the time to tell you a thread has been deleted, or moved, and why. Refreshing and seems like a good thing to me.

As for the merits of the specific decision, there will always be differences of opinion and mods have been allowed to make mistakes. I didn't see that thread but it is frustrating when good threads are deleted. There is also nothing new about that.

Anytime I see someone with a functioning brain cell on this forum, their sig more often than not has nothing promotional in it. So I'm not sure where these sigwhoring experts are at that you speak of.

Are you one of the Freelancer "paid-to-post" shills?

Your join date is after the takeover so I think it is doubtful you have enough insight to the changes in culture and members.

If you have any WF experience you would notice that Freelancer is doing the opposite of "creating some legitimacy and cleaning up the forum's act".

If anything it is the opposite: More scammers, more spam, poor regulation of WSO's, poor moderation of posts.

It is not a coincidence that many long term members fled the forum and many others lurk mostly in the Off-Topic forum.

    Les,

I think what that means though, is having a domain name that once clicked bypasses the domain and goes to the affiliate site/offer.

Easily done but going to a squeeze page and opting in, they are sent to affiliate offer rather than thanks for signing up page.

I don't know, but that seems different to me

      WD,
An affiliate offer is different to an affiliate link.
My understanding was the original intent of the rule was to make it a little more difficult for the people sent here just to advertise affiliate links.
Most weren't able to make pages themselves so it tended to slow down the onslaught.

One can only imagine the amount of garbage we will get here now, once people realise they just need to go to leadpages, slap in an affiliate link and off they go.
The final nail in the coffin.

    Good luck enforcing that.

You cannot access the forum via a proxy.
That made me LOL. Good luck enforcing this.

You cannot use the forum as part of any effort to compete with Warrior Forum.
    Haha.

That's a deterrent, isn't it? And/or so that if they notify someone that what they're doing isn't "authorized" by them, they can ban them if they keep doing it. Fair enough, surely?

Again, I think you've missed the point. It will serve as a justification for banning people who re-join under false identities, using proxies, having been permanently banned. And that's probably why it's there? We should be welcoming that, not ridiculing it.

They don't need justification—they own the property.

No, you missed my point, but I didn't make it very elegantly. The point is this: No forum in existence can enforce a rule like that. So seeing this rule is funny to people who understand how futile it is.

Posting rules like these will just make tech-savvy trolls try harder because they see it as a challenge.

Reddit has come closest to solving this problem. They "shadowban" users. Trolls or spammers don't know they've been banned, so they keep posting. But their posts are only visible to them. They don't sign up for multiple accounts unless they realize they've been soft-banned. Some do, some don't. Elegant.

I have ~10 spammers on my sub at any one time who don't realize that I've shadowbanned them. They stay busy posting to themselves.

This works on Reddit because its content is so spread out. It wouldn't work on a forum like WF. Trolls would quickly realize that no one is responding to them. Then they would hop on their VPN and make a new account.

    Yeah I remember....

O.k. that makes sense so it is the same in that sense.

Thanks for clearing it up Les.

Can't say anything about squeeze pages, but affiliate links, cloaked or otherwise, have been banned long before the change of ownership.

From your later explanation, that the redirect only went into effect after a visitor took a positive action (the opt-in), would have been okay so long as you owned and/or controlled the page you linked to in your sig.

As for your last comment, I'm starting to agree with you.

    Hi Ray:
That thread was awesome. Sad that it is gone. Most of the points are ones that we should cover. Most of my testimonials are very vague. I should be more specific from now on. All the best to you.

Man, I'm getting so sick of WF.

Earlier this week a thread I created was deleted in the offline marketing section, the topic was lead nurturing and after 50+ responses and thousands of views it was deleted because there was a link posted in the thread to a lead nurturing resource (free guide no opt in, just a more in depth resource). Another thread was deleted because somebody linked to a hubspot blog post.

Not to mention the huge error on their behalf with the WSO section and warrior payments. WSOs couldn't be bumped, I tried twice, and they said they would credit me those two bumps, but now they said sorry, they can only credit one of those bumps.

Earlier today the warrior payments links for people to pay, weren't working. It wouldn't redirect to paypal, and instead it led to a 503 error: guru mediation, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

ANOTHER THING... is a friend of mine was promoting something as an affiliate and it wouldn't credit sales.

I understand glitches happen, errors happen, but man, the support is absolutely horrendous.

It's sad to say but it looks as if we're going to be on a sharp decline, which is unfortunate due to all the time spent here.

They have a right to make whatever rules they want since they do own the property. I don't exactly have a problem with any of the rules, but I do have a problem with how things have been headed lately, specifically the support.

I'd be tempted to start an additional forum but I've been there and done that and the time involved is more than I'd want to put in right now. Perfect opportunity for someone to benefit from the WF decline.

Indeed. I get between 5 and 10 private messages per day suggesting it.

(Have no plans to do so, though! But you could?!)

when you say illegal to link to the warrior forum...under whose law?

It is in the new rules and terms.

Basically that gives them license to go after people if they break their terms as I understand it, though I am no lawyer

i dont plan to break any TOS, but in a practical sense,,, as far as i can see, i could break 90% of the TOS without even being a WF member, so it doesn't make sense.

Yeah, it seems rather stretched out. How can they be enforced? I don't know the answer I just know if changes are made we should be abreast of them.

Linking to the forum puts all sorts of sites at risk, like Google who has all the pages indexed
Sites that are directly opposing the wf, with links to posts they are speaking of. there is a lot of sites that link to it, people send emails . etc.
That is just one of the many changes made apparently.

    for example....

engaging in unauthorized framing of or linking to the Website
More fun ......."I can do this without being a wf member"

You cannot write posts with an "excessive" amount of CAPITAL LETTERS.....cant do this as you must be a member.

You cannot use anything on the forum to "contact" any user, unless they first explicitly consent....."You can contact wf members without being a member although i wont reveal such info"

You cannot access the forum via a proxy....you can do this without being a member

You cannot use the forum as part of any effort to compete with Warrior Forum. Sorry W+ and JVZoo, and their affiliates......"lots of people do this off forum, even put warrior forum in their domain names to either ridicule, promote, or get some gain off warrior forum's traffic".

And if you finally decide to go after the individual....example, not in USA, how are you certain your TOS is not against their laws in the specific country?
