There is no problem in registering .org domain. It as good as .net. But you might be considered to buy the .com is the first place.

It's best to go after .com but of course most of the time those will be taken. What are you trying to do with the domain? If you're trying to build a brand then the best thing to do is get all of the gTLDs.

Nothing wrong with getting a .org domain but I would try my best to get the .com or .net first.

It ranks the same as a .com
The problem is if you want type in traffic or you tell people your domain they will often use the .com
If you are looking at traffic generated via seo or paid methods such as ppc then the above is nt a problem.

The .com, .net and .org domains rank about the same. As long as you stay away from .ru or other "suspicious" domain extensions, you shouldn't encounter any problems.

.org is as good as .com, there is no problem for SEO purposes. But most of people are more familiar with .com.
If you still want use .org for your site, it's better you buy both of .com and .org, then you redirect .com to .org.

You're best bet is the .com. Higher resale value and more user-familiarity.

As others have said, for SEO purposes it makes very little difference.
If you're buying a domain to flip it, there is a big difference.
.COM sells faster and for much more money than any other type (everything else being the same).
If you build a site on a .ORG and someone else owns the .COM, you're going to lose some traffic (and possibly revenue) to the .COM owner.

I can't add much to what Gene just said, above.

From my perspective, it wouldn't be "the fact that it's a .org" that's the problem: it would be the fact that someone else already owns the .com. That would put me off wanting to build my business on it. That's all downside, really. The .org doesn't look as good, you lose some traffic, and your potential resale value is comparatively very poor.
