How many niche sites to really make this a full time job?

Hello all. I've really been researching SEO and feel like i'm starting to get the hang of it. However, I do notice that a lot of bloggers talk about how you can make money. What is a little less common to hear, is how many sites it actually took for them to really make this a full time venture.

I believe for example, that Spencer Haws has something like 300 sites! I know for a lot of people starting out, they have no idea it really does take this much work, and is probably the reason that many aren't able to do this... I mean... how can you even manager that many sites!

So my question is, for THOSE OF YOU REALLY DOING THIS FULL TIME, how many sites do you own?

I'm sure this will help many newbies realize how much work this actually is! (including myself!)

THANKS!

There is no real answer. You can make a ton from one site or nothing from 10.000!

Always depends on the page(s) itself.

If you are thinking about creating websites then I would seriously consider to study Flippa.com relentlessly.

There is a vast education to be had there if you pay attention very closely.

I own 9 main ones (which I've gradually built up over 6+ years), but I was making a full-time living from my first 2.

As so often, IM-related questions beginning with the words "How many" can sometimes generate unhelpful answers.

It all depends on what the business model is. (And on a lot of other things, too!). There are people earning 7-figure annual incomes from one site; there are also people with 100 sites barely getting by at all.

(My response is much longer than Charles's, above, but not as good as his. And even that reality, in itself, further illustrates that "quantitative approaches" aren't so hot, in this context. Sorry. )

    As many as it takes.

Don't put a number on it. Just get to work and don't take a breather until you have enough sites to make this a full time income for yourself.

  • Nobody on here will be able to answer this question. It honestly depends, their are marketers who know how to make 3/5K from one site and only invest 2K. Their are others that have to have 300 sites to make that much. It seriously all depends on the intention of the project. Focus long term, think of your projects as being a private stock. Your job is to market, rank and improve it's potential for profits.

Here is something really helpful for you to look at.

depends on quality of and popularity and monetization methods.. One good site could be enough, but why would you want to stop at 1, or 5 or 10 etc..

What do you consider to be a "niche site"? How much money do you want to make online? I hope you dont have alot of debt in alimony or child support or something like that. If so dont let your ex know about your business endeavors lol.

I'm sorry i'm being an ass. I had a great day today. I only have 1 full site right now. Created probably 7 in the past. All failed. Had sites about:

    - penis enlargement (was very profitable on frontend but had no backend business)
    - basketball
    - computer repair
    - ebook store (stupid idea)

But all of these could have been made profitable if it had backend and better email marketing strategy. Do you have backend products in mind and a good email marketing plan?

When I started in 1998 we all had lots of different sites then some of the big players started to combine them all into one mega site.

Today it all seems to revolve about combining the two systems. Have a bunch of satellite sites and then one main site plus a bunch of lead capture sites.

Lets face it the cheapest form of advertising is a domain and hosted website. Work out your business plan and then take massive action.

It depends on your business model. Some people make dozens of tiny 5-page sites to rank for a single keyword that will earn them $50/month per site or less.

Others develop big authority sites that can bring in thousands a month.

Personally I think the authority sites are much more secure from Google slaps, but the micro niche sites are much faster to set up, thus the appeal of them.

find out what the number is a year you want to make. We will go with $1,000,000

    1,000,000/365(days in a year) = 2740

2740 is the amount of money you need to make per day.
Find the average profit per sale number. Basically add up how much you make from all of the products combined then subtract the cost for marketing.

We will say I only promote 1 product that brings me $50 a sale. I have to spend 12 bucks to get this sale. So each sale brings me about 38 bucks.

divide the number you need to hit each day by the average profit you make on the sales.

2740/38 =72.1 sales a day with my 38 buck product.

Create a sales funnel that has consistent numbers. We will say my funnel brings me a sale for every 100 visitors I get. This includes whatever methods you use to capture emails and follow up or what ever. 100 visitors = 1 sale. This is working with an industry standard 1% conversion rate. From what I've read on this forum people are doing many many times better than this. But, lets be conservative.

If 100 visitors = 1 sale or a 1% conversion rate. divide the number of people by the conversion rate. 72.1/0.01 = 7210 visitors a day will bring you a million dollar a year income. You can also multiply this number because 72.1/0.01 =72.1x100

To simplify the equation: ((amount you want to make a year)/365)/(average daily profit of all campaigns))/(conversion rate) = (amount of traffic you have to send to your campaigns each day)

Lets say I want to earn 50k a year which is a nice salary...keeping that same 1% conversion rate and 38 buck average profit.

((50,000/365)/38)/0.01=360.5 people I have to send to my website(s) a day.

Great answer thanks for the detail

So on that basis you need a niche with 10800 searches per month and low competition ...?.

No, you need at least twice as much, if you do SEO only and manage to get to #1.

The click-through rate, on google positions (from many sites I built) according to google webmaster tools is:

        #1 around 50%
        #2 around 20%
        #3 around 10%

The rest 20% almost evenly split between place 4-11 (yeah the second page #1 postion sometimes is better then first page number 10).

For adwords the rates are way worse - at least I never got an ad to be clicked through 50%, even if I paid top $...

so you can extend the above formula to divide through 0,5 to get the amount of searches you need (or 0,2 / 0,1 if you only make it to #2 and #3)

I would start making money with one before you spend time building up other sites. Once you start making some extra money from this, you can also outsource your work and start to make even more. From what I have found, making your 1st sale is always the toughest but when you start getting a steady stream of traffic, things should start becoming much easier

I'm not really an expert in seo numbers. SEO takes too long for my taste and you never know if you will rank at all for the keyword(s). I don't know. From a PPC stand point I usually get around a 2-4% Click through rate for text ads and a 0.4% click through rate for banner ads on the display network. I love the display network. I got over 600 targeted clicks for around 72 bucks yesterday. Using this system it's as simple as targeting the right keywords and google gets me in front of enough people. I am sure there are ways to get traffic to your website in a cheaper or better quality way, but this is what's been getting me fast same day targeted traffic.

The trick is to have an awesome budgeting and managment system. Ocne you cant keep up with the work yourself, split some of the profit as investment into outsourcing (odesk, elance, etc...), get somene skilled (not necessarily cheap) freelancers to manage a part of your work, your projects. Use your freed up time to scale up and grow further, rinse-repeat.

From experience I can say the most effective teams are built upon 6 people, as soon as there are more, you will need someone to overview the 2nd team, otherwise you will loose all your time in micromanagment. Read about lean startup aproach it might help you

Once you got the structure set, you can repeat it endless times and still spend same amount of work

You just need one successful niche site.
You just need one successful Kindle book.
You just need one self-created product.
    Etc.....

    The rest is gravy.

It's pretty rare for someone to have 300 sites. The only business model involving that is where you produce junk sites across the network and just use the power in numbers to draw search traffic.

Most people doing that started out with a small number of sites, something happened with Google and they had to launch more sites to earn the same amount of money.... then more... and more.... and more...

I wasn't trying to sell those people. I wanted to add them to my subscriber list. I converted 1.44% of the clicks.

If it's "monetized" I can't say yes or no to that question because as you know from the other thread I'm revamping the way I handle my subscribers.

I could probably convert more of them now because I've also gotten advice on optimizing my conversion process. Right now the traffic is turned off until all of this renovation is done.

I wouldn't recommend sending bought traffic right to a sales page. No matter how targeted the traffic is.
About 2 weeks ago I sent 600 people to the venus factor sales page and got nothing but a bill for the traffic. You can try to blame it on the traffic, but I know exactly how targeted this traffic was, and it didn't work.

Adding them to the subscriber list, building a relationship, and then selling them seems to be the golden ticket.

Depends on what you are selling. You can't just shove snake oil in front of people and expect them to buy it. You need to get their email so that you can brainwash them over a period of time.

At my peak i had close to 200 sites in a variety of niches and markets.

It became a massive split test to see which topics worked best, which site designs had the highest conversions, and ultimately which yielded the most profit over time.

Only about 2 dozen become real winners, and of that number about 6 had the potential to become larger sites.

Two of the sites became big successes, and i slowly added content to the remainder and they made decent profit, but nothing close to the two primary sites.

So, in the end, it became that about 6 sites won out and provided the most income with approximately 66 - 75% of the income solely from the two authority sites.

This was all done over about 4 years. 80+% of the domains from the first year were not renewed until i only had the final real winners.

To be fair, these sites are part of my income but not all of my income. I believe a full time income is roughly $3 - 4k monthly in the US? I could be wrong, but I just wanted to clarify that these sites are only part of the equation for me.

I never have more than 20 niche sites on the go at any one time but it's more than possible to make a full time living with just one. This is such a vague question. It depends on so many factors, including what niche you're in, how you're driving traffic to the site, what you're selling on the site, etc.

With the right business model and corresponding sites (especially one that is content-driven instead of just a sales page), you could make a substantial six figure income (or more) off of just one or two sites.

On the other hand, if you're selling low-ticket products and you're not building a list (or using Adsense as the primary form of monetization), you'd potentially have to build hundreds of sites to make a full-time income.

So without knowing more details about the type of site you intend to build, it's quite impossible to give you a definitive answer.

I'm at 14 currently. However I and my wife were full time with it on a single niche in 2012. We didn't start opening up new niches until February or March of 2013.

Advertise a lead capture page to drive traffic and get subscribers. Use that list to make offers.

The question really is what do you want your life to be all about?

Are you passionate about IM and having several sites in different niches? Or do you pursue a certain passion? If your answer is the latter one, I recommend you putting all your efforts in building 1 authority website that you also put your main focus on.

But before doing so make sure there're enough people sharing your passion also.

It just takes one Good Site.

I've got SINGLE sites making me $500 USD per day on good days - and that's pretty low compared to some guys I know.

My advice: Focus on building an AUTHORITY site covering many aspects of one topic (IE: a big fitness site, or dating site)

Don't just do a review site for one product

Bad Example: BestGoogleSniper3Review.com - that just looks like you're trying to make money promoting the Product

Good Example: On the OTHER hand, something like BestIMReviews.com/Google-sniper-3 looks more trustworthy, and authoritative.

    Hope this helps!

I have found that you can make approx $10 per month profit on average. There are a few that will make $100 or more. Also, there are some that make less than $10 per year. Those are a loss because of the cost of a domain name. Basically, I would say about 400 big sites will generate a profit $4,000 per month or $48,000 per year. That is like the bare minimum to survive. Creating content for 400 big sites is a full time job I do not envy.

That was back in the day, when that kind of stuff actually worked. Just building micro-sites systematically and forgetting about them.

I doubt he's doing stuff like that anymore.

Mere owning some niche sites will not produce the desired results always as not all the sites you have will work equally well.

For a full time income, you first need to decide the strategy of monetizing your site/s and most importantly your traffic generation plans for the site/s. Because, it's highly impossible to generate income from a site with organic traffic only.

Besides, you can only think of second site when your first site is generating an income for you which is either nearly automated or takes as little time of you to make that site work for you.

      Hello,

I have struggled online for a long time until I almost gave up. I tried all sorts of businesses but I always failed at getting Traffic. When I tried to go back to a normal job it was worse. Just recently I found a site I wish I had found many years ago.

Just with this site - BTW, its a Traffic site and Profit site - Two in one. Free to join. So I urge you to leave everything you are doing and take a look at it. Find Utube videos of people who are making a leaving jus with this site alone. Not fake videos just marketing businesses but real life examples.

That is my tip for everyone who is struggling and cant seem to find the right solution.
