I am looking for a little advice: from a strictly traffic generating view, would creating a forum for members to use or share ideas or a social site using buddypress generate more traffic and provide better for overall internet visibility.

I am building a website about creating art, furniture, jewelry, ect... from junk.
I plan to monetize the website by selling plans on how to make each item I make and other self generated informational products. Plans will be cheap (5-20 bucks each).

Thanks for any help and advice you all give me.

Regards,

Daniel

I think both would work and generate traffic. I myself like forum scripts because I'm familiar with them.. At the same time, BuddyPress is probably more configurable to make it search engine friendly. My vote would be forums, but I think you could generate traffic with both of them.

Total overkill for most people's needs and vBulletin is very expensive. VERY expensive.

Check out phpBB. It's free (which people here just love) easy to install so you can be up and running in minutes and dozens of free extensions.

Why deal with the complications and expense of a Lamborghini, when a rock-solid Town and Country will more than meet your needs?

Just installed this for a friend, over the weekend. Eight top level forums with a total of 35 sub-forums and 5 extensions. Total time: 70 minutes. SWEET!!!

I have used both. No contest - unless you're a masochist with money to burn.

      Thank you.

        Nah.

phpBB is a terrible idea for anyone wishing to grow a real business.

        - Godawful functionality/ user-experience.
        - Even worse for SEO.
        - About as secure as a house without any doors.
        - Look under the hood and the CSS will make you laugh.

I'd actually recommend BuddyPress over it. Hell, I'd recommend Facebook groups.

It amazes me that people consider a few hundred bucks a lot of money to setup a business. If I wanted to setup a new business in the high street, it would cost me thousands.

In business? Think of the future. Build towards it.

        - vBulletin (good)
        - Xenforo (best)

        Cheers,

        - Tom

It's not nice to inflict pain on others. It's perfectly fine unless you are expecting hundreds of thousand of users. Of course, everyone here thinks they'll have that in a few months. All you're doing is making their life more difficult and impeding their progress.

I would never recommend vBulletin to anyone unless they had the requisite skills to administer it, or a large enough bank account to be willing to support someone to assist them. Always keep in mind that just because YOU are able to do something - that doesn't mean that someone else can.

This script looks great, performs without issue and if the free updates are applied as issued, won't be any more of a security risk than any other script out there. Millions of people use it and it is well-known as the most widely used open source BB in the world. So, there are millions and millions of people that choose to use what I think you might call 'crap software' based on your list of inadequacies and risk their business in the process? C'mom, Tom. lol

The reason I dd this for my friend is in the hope that we can salvage something from his vBulletin forum which was severely hacked and make life easier for him, going forward. It's not a perfect world. Whatever can go wrong probably will.

Of course I have now set him up with daily off-site backups to Dropbox with a 10 day retention schedule. Bring on the hackers!

Opinions are just that and in the end they are meaningless. What matters is what works. Right? :-)

          Have a great day.

Otherwise, we'll have to agree to disagree.

You can use both BuddyPress with bbPress (WordPress's forum plugin) and do both?

I vote for Forums. It is much more search engine friendly and it can generate great traffic too. Many people visit forums and stay for longer period.

That is very tue, yet they also want everything to be 'free' and are offended when told they might actually need to spend money - to make money.

It's rare that I would ever recommend a free solution. This script, though, is just too good to pass up. I can afford vBulletin and all the ancillary costs associated with it, but would never subject myself to using it. If I wanted pain, I'd be married.

If you want to "fake it till you make it" you have to project the correct persona.
Nothing about my persona has ever been deemed 'correct' by anyone, at any time.

Because you're more concerned with helping them...then robbing them.
No. The secret to Internet riches is to do as little as necessary to give the impression that you are concerned and actually do want to help them, gain their trust and then - take them to the cleaners. I'm just attempting to lay some ground work. :-)

      Thank you.
