To be honest with you am not sure, but if it was me, then I would change passwords and contact my host for advice.

    Good luck

You probably don't have anything to worry about. The returned message usually only means someone spoofed your email address, not invaded your site.

I have over a hundred forwarding email addresses. The aren't mailboxes, just a forwarding address. I still get those same return emails from the forward accounts that don't even exist.

    Don't be too worried.

If the email doesn't originate from your system, but uses your email as the source address, many systems will bounce it as undeliverable. The fact that the email you sent went through indicates that this is what happened. It confirms to me that the spammer did not originate the email from your system.

donar - set up an SPF record - if you don't know how to do this - contact your web host and ask them to do it for you.
or here you go from cpanel forum:
simply go to the cPanel interface, in the "Mail" section click on "Email Authentication" then click "Enable" under SPF. This screen will also allow you to customize your SPF entry without worrying about the proper syntax for the DNS entry.
That helps eliminate most email spoofing - and prevents your domain from being blacklisted because of spammers who have spoofed your email address.

thanks for the reply Karen , the address of mine that the message was supposed to have been sent from , donar@westnet.com.au is not my ISP, it used to be when i only had satellite , but now that i can get wireless i have another ISP, however i still kept my old westnet mail box , it seemed to be less trouble than contacting everyone.
so regarding your instructions , do you mean contact my ISP or the mailbox involved , donar @westnet.com.au ? thanks again , don

in this case, I would contact your email provider - and in future it's best not to post your email address on a public forum. If you do need to post it for any reason - make it hard for the spammers and post it this way:

donar at westnet dot com dot au

                be careful out there

It's an old trick, as mentioned above, of just spoofing your address.

Apart from setting up an SPF record, there isn't much you can do

If you are attempting to find the originating IP and you have an email sent to you or forwarded from a bounce, you can find the originator IP in the header info of the original email.

Look for the sent from IP, not the from email address IP.

Then you can just google the IP and it will give you more info about it and possibly how to contact, if the IP info is not private.

When this happens to me, I delete the email address I was using in the from email address and create a new one. The problem that can happen from this is that ISPs can blacklist your server.

That is why I delete the email address and use a new one.j

I hope this has been helpful,
