What are the qualities that make a great Internet marketer?

What do you think separates great Internet marketers from people who get no where. Internet marketing isn't easy and it is constantly evolving. What is the difference do you think between people who are successful with it and others who struggle to get any traction?

initiative, self-motivation, drive, hard-work ethic, entrepreneurial, desire to learn new concepts and implement them right away.

Being a good copywriter, knowledge of some psychological concepts of humans, and knowledge of html would be a step in the right direction as well.

Believe in yourself. Be willing to accept small victories instead of going for the "big" score. Get yourself established. Be willing to commit to your online presence just as if you were opening a "brick and mortar" store. Put in the same number of hours in preparation for your online business just as you would before you would "open" your store. It will pay off in the end.

The ability to take action without knowing all the details is paramount to success in internet marketing. You will never really be able to know everything to your satisfaction, at least not in a timely manner. Being able to deal with uncertainty and just jumping in and doing it without knowing all the details is crucial to succeeding in internet marketing.

I know this for a fact, because I was caught in an endless loop of analysis paralysis before I determined to shed this habit once and for all. Some things you cannot really learn by reading or watching demonstrations on how to do it, you absorb and intuitively assimilate what you need to know by just implementing it. That doesn't mean to say you'll succeed every time, but you'll get better at this. Getting comfortable with taking action this way is key to learning and getting results quickly.

This. It doesn't matter how passionate you are about something, if there is no market for it, you will never make money.

I keep trying to explain this to my idiot college friends who are taking on huge loans to major in fields like liberal arts, communications, and philosophy. It sickens me.

Other than that, I think the most important thing is a determined mindset. The determined entrepreneur will try again when they fail, and will continue trying until they get it right.

If they're in such fields for the money, there is a higher risk of disappointment. Funny thing though, money isn't important to everybody, and those fields spark ideas that are the basis to human progress.

Regardless of the motivation in this specific context, I would caution against using "friends" and "idiots" in the same sentence outside of joking/ribbing.

These friends are in fact idiots. They are good people, but they make incredibly stupid choices.

If you're going to take out $100,000 in student loans, you'd better be able to pay that back. Because at the end of your studies, you will have no additional employability yet be legally obligated to pay back loans each month.

If you want to pursue a hobby, great! Do it. Don't take out 100K in loans for it though. At least when you're debt-free, you'll actually have time to pursue the hobby because you won't be scrambling for money to pay back your debt.

Normally I wouldn't care, but when you look at how much student loan debt there is (1.2 TRILLION, far more than all credit card debt) its clearly having a huge impact on our economy. These stupid students not pushing our economy forward because they're spending all their time and money paying back loans instead of purchasing and producing consumer goods. If you need proof of that, look out our GPD growth rate.

Not to mention that many of them will go on welfare or other government aid which I, as a taxpayer that did not screw up and major in a worthless degree, has to pay for. Yet, my smart friends and I will get the blame for it because we're "evil rich privleged white men" and deserve to have even more stolen from us.

It doesn't matter which way you look at it, borrowing money you can't afford to pay back for a degree that will provide no return on investment is incredibly stupid. ESPECIALLY since so much can be learned online today for free.

This wasn't anything personal towards you by the way, just venting.

Hi Michael, I feel mindset is HUGE! I spend about an hour each day - today I cheated a bit but will get offline in a few - working on my mindset. Top IMers work on their inner world to think and fee abundantly and this mindset carries over into all that they do. It's the outer world mirroring the inner world bit. Top dawgs persist, free others, inspire others and get serious about creating massive value for their audience, and they do this, usually, by doing thorough personal development daily.

Thanks for asking the question Michael. Onward and upward!

It's hard to add much to these answers. I have to agree with 95% of what I read here.

A solid internet marketer, from what I have learned, is determined, consistent, plans for quality advertising so that money is not thrown away on poor advertising, and takes action daily (consistent).

A solid marketer puts value out each day in the marketplace also, or at least on a very regular basis. Invest in yourself, learn, apply and teach what you learned,

Lastly, you simply cannot be afraid to fail. If you don't fail, or don't hear the word "no", you aren't working enough to talk to enough people. I had to come to terms with this myself.

You really have to get on the phone long enough to talk to people and ask if they are open to extra income, and not worry if they say "no". The more you do this, the more skill you develop and the more confidence you gain.

As people opt in to your list, simply call them and offer any help that they need. I call some people within minutes of them opting in, when possible, and they are amazed that a real person called them.

It's not old school to be on the phone. It's not old school to accept rejection and simply call the next opt in or lead. You help the people who will let you help them.

I would recommend to anybody to read "Go For No" and watch the associated videos. You will massively and aggressively work harder on your business when you decide to reach as many "no's" as you can.

The "yes's" are mixed in when there are enough "no's"

To me that is part of developing into a solid, successful marketer.

Maybe this helps some. I am developing a passion for working at getting "no's".

The one big thing that separates the very successful internet marketers who take the same actions as the not so very successful internet marketers is this:

The very successful internet marketer works with programs that pay him residual income, an income from the efforts of others, and bigger commissions from products upsells.

The struggling internet marketer will do the opposite. They only work with programs that pays them ONCE. They are happy when they earn a one-time $20-$50 product commission. I know this because I used to be that marketer. It got me nowhere.

I agree with Ryan above; Mindset is by far one of the most important things to have in order to succeed. You may be passionate & focused but if your mindset is off, your results will reflect that.

Michael said above that you don't need to 'know' everything in order to get started. Very true. There are too many people who are 'waiting' to know everything before getting started.

Big Mistake. Because I don't know everything and I have been online for 9 years. Thank God I didn't wait for 9 years to get started because I still make mistakes.

But that doesn't stop me from 'taking' action and getting results.

I think personally that 'Perseverance' will make all the difference in the world.

I lacked the right 'mindset' in the beginning and made a ton of mistakes. But by persevering... mindset, belief, focus will come as long as you are taking action.

    Great question.

    Here's my thoughts.

Great internet marketers learn to see challenges
as an opportunity rather than a stumbling block. They
    also master the art of...

    *Driving targeted traffic
    *Collecting targeted leads
    *Email follow up
    *Sales copy

So, while 98% of internet marketers stalk people on
facebook (lol just playing) the top dogs set up their
funnels, knowing that they will get leads and sales
    daily.

    Just my thoughts

P.S. They learn on the job too. Get started, go back and
    perfect later!

  • What i've noticed; when people say making money online is hard. I feel like they are usually referring to the fact that it is actually easy but boring. The hard part is actually staying focused, a majority of it is all management. You're always thinking about your projects. Whether that be improving it, getting more traffic, improving your sales funnels, thinking of new content, new marketing ideas. Most importantly having to study new things.

Learn to look at your computer as your office; a tool. Don't go on it for anything else other than work. You're not going to play with a hammer just because you use it all of the time. After 9 hours of hitting nails, the last thing you want to do is look at a hammer.

    - Staying focused
    - Staying committed
    - Focusing on the goals you want to accomplish for that day
    - Listing what you need done and not doing anything else in the day until all of it is finished for the day.
    - Take risks i.e test markets. Their is nothing wrong with investing into a project and it failing.

In general it's all mindset and self discipline
As a newbie your mindset should be
    - having faith in what your doing
    - staying focused

As an Intermediate my focus is always
    - how can I make this project better
    - what else can I add
    - Is everything optimized properly
    - where are my backlinks
    - what can I do to improve my social reach
    - How can I better my brand
    - What can I do to build my list
    - Am I getting all of content from writers on time

    In other words JUST WORK

Lots of good answers here so far. Here's another angle that separates winners from the also rans. The ability to ...
      • Fail constructively
      • Fail forward
      - or -
      • Learn from Failure

I noticed The "F" word is the ... "Elephant in the room" everyone's ignoring so far in this thread for the most part. But it's the one thing we all (including the icons) probably have in common. We've all failed at something or at some point.

The one's who are a little father ahead are the ones' who learnt the most from their failures, setbacks, or stumbling blocks. The one's that didn't must remain at the same level (or fall further back) until they learn.

The same thing could be said about most any high achiever you can name from Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Jordan or Dr. Martin Luther King. I've read all their biographies, most more than once.

Yea, we know about their success(es), but they had a truck load of failures they used (like amo) to get to the success.

    Being my initial response was constricted due to time restraints, I wanted to expand my original post; "copywriting"...as it was vague and I wanted to see if anyone else had made mention of what truly determines a great internet marketer (or human being in general);

    Communication!

Being able to communicate (and appreciate) others whom are in search of... Be it answers, money, knowledge, or survival... Successful people online & offline seem to communicate exactly what their consumer audience, company, employees, affiliates, students, and business needs, wants, or desires.

All true success derives from a modus operandi, whereby without the proper intelligence to communicate and broadcast ( such as media and advertising portals) the solutions others seek... And to share in the knowledge, ingenuity, and creativity of others... Life as we know it would suck.

Whist it could be said IMing requires a certain breed of animal to attain success... It really boils down to one simple thing... Your ability to communicate to your consumer audience's desired outcome and convince them it was worth paying for the attainment of said result...

All the other stuff is just the icing that decorates mankinds lasting ability to chisel and carve out a message for others to find, and in the end writing in my honest opinion is, was, and will be the sustaining proof of mankinds desire to be recognized... And to leave behind their depictation of what life was to them...and they communicated it through whatever marketing skills they had at their disposal.

We are fortunate to have this capability, and at the core of technology is the ability to convey our message for others to find and expand upon...the core of intelligence.

The qualities I think make for great internet marketing are:

    1. A solid understanding of what business they are "really" in - meaning they can talk the prospects language instead of their own.

    2. They know the tangible values of their products or services.

    3. They know the "specific" problems each tangible value solves.

    4. They know who they "specifically" solve those problems for.

    5. They understand how their products or services are "a" solution.

    6. They then build strategies, goals and tasks that help them attract the right people.

Finally, they understand how to build community and collaboration.

The key in my mind is that ultimately great internet marketing emphasizes the prospect and not the how great the business is or what the business does.

Any other focus than that only leads to confusion or gives the prospect a reason to not to engage with you as a brand or give them an opportunity to buy from you.

If the foundation is laid right, then the how to's become much simpler.

SPIRITUAL - I have literally seen thousands come through my trainings and every year I only have a tiny handful that make it. I could not for the life of me understand why. Was it laziness? No.

Was it that my stuff just didn't work? No.

I finally realized it was simply all spiritual. When you can align yourself with the fact that there really is NOTHING logical about any of this and you then understand that it is ALL spiritual, that will be the day every thing turns around for YOU and your marketing. I retired back in 2006 under the age of 40 from online marketing and it simply was because of my FAITH.

It had nothing to do with creating products and websites ( a monkey can do that. lol ).

There is this ZONE that you can take yourself to and once you are in that zone.. wow! You can do anything then.

Hope this comment wasn't too weird for any of you. Good luck to each of you in your marketing journeys. It isn't easy, but it dang sure is worth it.

Persistence, ambition, some ethics, and a continuous supply of profitable ideas.

Without persistence, you're just a marketer who goes from project to project without completion (no results, just lots of unfinished work).

Without ambition, you might have a ton of goals but no determination or "push" to achieve them.

Without some ethics, you're likely to become a notorious marketer rather than a great marketer.

And without those profitable ideas, everything you do will be without result. Great internet marketers are known for high execution on profitable ideas.

The simplest answer is MINDSET and BELIEF.

Most people do not really work on their mindset and do not work on self-development.

Self-improvement is CRITICAL to your success online. If you believe you can't then you can't. If you believe you can, then you can. As simple as that.

That is the biggest difference between the successful people and those who are not.

    The successful people online ...

Since you used the word "great" in your title I think that a person would require almost every quality that has been mentioned in this thread. It is not a quality but sometimes "timing" is extremely helpful.

I think mindset is a huge part of success!

    1. You have to have the mindset that you are going to reach your goal no matter what.
    2. You have to have the mindset of this is a business and treat it as a business.
    3. You have to have the mindset of providing value to others, not just chasing the money.
    4. You have to have the mindset that there is no such thing as perfection and you have to take massive action on all you have learned.
    5. You have to have the mindset that there is no failure, just feedback and the only way you will fail is to totally give up!

      Great question.

Asking these type of question tells me you have the ambition to become a great marketer. That's the first ingredient frankly a lot of people lack.

Not letting anyone discourage or belittle you of that ambition is the second step.

      Third step is this.

If this resonates with you, take it to heart and make it yours with action and you will become great.

Set a goal to do something great.

Great in your definition, not anyone else's. It could be a seven figure product launch, it can be a start-up company, or it can be generating x number of visitors to your website.

This goal needs to excite and challenge you.

When you accomplish this goal, you will have developed the character and qualities of a great marketer you seek to become.

You don't need to prepare those qualities in advance.

Just get started. Enjoy the journey. And become.

All of the above, but also understanding that Internet marketing is just a small part of marketing as a whole.

To be a good Internet marketer, you need to understand marketing in its entirety. You need to know where and how the Internet fits into your potential buyer's entire buying decision, not just what they do once they're online.

If you focus only on understanding the online aspect of marketing, you're not seeing the full picture. It's like starting to watch a movie halfway through... Although you get to see the end, you've probably missed the plot.

For me, that would be creating value and staying in business.

      Now that's the short version...

The longer version would be, helping people the much you can by creating value in any way possible. Make sure money must not changed hands before you give value to people. This builds your relationship with your clients and makes them trust you.

The second one would be staying in business. This is the part where you learn to monetize your business. A lot of things come into play here like product creation, copy-writing, advertising, etc...

These skills are a whole lot to learn, but with the right frame of mind, you can get the ball rolling. You don't have to learn everything before you actually get started. Also remember that you don't have to do them all by yourself. That's why we have freelance websites.

I'd advise you move fast and break things (like the Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook said they do)

I hope these few suggestions give you a little insight to the path you seek.

      Thanks

Did nobody mention personality? If you notice, many top online marketers have a magnetic presence in which captures a widespread audience. A lot of internet marketing seems to incorporate a unique personal perspective given via blogs, social media and videos. People gravitate towards these marketers because they're often perceived as trustworthy and charismatic, so personality and the ability to convey an articulated clear purpose, goes a long way.

    1. They don't mind looking stupid.
    2. They don't believe in competition.
    3. They know ahead of time they're going to fail sometimes, and don't care.
    4. They don't have a backup plan because they WILL make this work.

If you have great ROI, f.e. 300% and more, you don't need any other "qualities" except some amount of money to start.
But if ROI a little more than 100% then you can choose what you need:

Luck, Experience, Imagination, Patience, Organizing Ability, etc

Passion, that's needed in every single thing you want to become good at.

Passion to succeed. Passion to learn more. Passion to take action. Passion to fail and get back up.

You also need to be a visionary. All the great people: Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos... they're all visionaries.

Figure out where you want to be, constantly visualize yourself being there, doing it, and having it, and you will get it.

Before J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book was even finished, she visualized her books on the shelves on display in the front of the bookstore. Next thing you know, it was there..

Figure out EXACTLY what you want the world to look like, and do the small things that will get it there.

Everything else will just fall into place.

    1) A successful Marketer knows exactly his goals and is focused on attaining them:

Hence, by having clearly defined his objectives, a successful Marketer is armed and ready to attain them. This way, he will not get distracted and give in all those hyped sales letters promising a get rich quick scam. It is a known fact that :"If you don't know where you are going, you will end-up somewhere else!"

Action: Take a moment NOW to honestly question yourself if your goals are crystal clear and attainable.

    2) A successful Marketer is committed to his success:

Yes! People who made it big in their business (whether on or offline) were ready to put in the effort needed. If you believe that you will become a millionaire by putting in an hour a day, you will just keep buying those " get rich fast gimmicks" and will waste your money.

Action: Ask yourself if you are committed to your online success and if you are willing to do the necessary sacrifices it will need in the beginning.

    3) A successful Marketer believes in his success:

The reality is actually way more powerful than this: "For a successful Marketer, failure is not an option!" Does this mean that everything runs smoothly and perfectly the first time around for those successful persons? Not at all! Most (if not all) Millionaires encountered multiple set-backs. Their strength comes from the fact that they took these set-backs merely as challenges and got more motivated from them. If you experience doubts at time while pursuing your Web career, allow yourself to be inspired by Thomas Edison who made over a thousand attempts in designing the light bulb. When asked if he ever got discouraged by all those repeated failures, he simply answered, smiling: " I did not fail, I just discovered a thousand ways that did not work!" Now, that's a winning attitude.

It all comes back to having the proper mind set.

Action: Honestly evaluate if you truelly believe in yourself and your success. Are you putting-up excuses? Do you often catch yourself down talking about your own goals?

    4) A successful Marketer honestly cares about his customers:

This one may come as a shocker. It is true though that successful marketers are in business because they care about making a difference and helping their customers.A person may make a good sum of money while selling a low quality service or product once. On the long run though, the customers can see through this person's facade and recurring income is not going to be at the "rendezvous".

Action: Examine your profound motives in wanting to do Internet Marketing. Are you just "trying" this to get out of a job you do not like? Is helping other people through the products and services you are providing a genuine goal for you?

    5) A successful Marketer is persistent:

It is pure utopia to think that everything will run smoothly and perfectly the first time around. Successful people are persistent people. Success does not come from never falling, it comes from falling and getting back-up successfully. Furthermore, great achievers have the ability to change failures into learning and creating opportunities. Most great inventions are the results of a need that created a frustration and then triggered a solution.

Action: Consider how you react when faced with a negative result. Do you crumble down? Do you react vividly saying: "This time, it's personal!" I like the image of Sylvester Stallone in the movie Rocky 1 during his fight with Apollo Creed. The more punches he got, the faster he got back up. Ask yourself if challenges are putting you down or, on the opposite, motivating you beyond your wildest dreams.

    6) A successful Marketer is a good listener:

Upon creating a strong marketing plan, a successful marketer will consider the needs of his potential customers. He will not assume what their needs are, he will ask the right questions and sincerely listen. A common mistake that new marketers do is provide customers what they think the market needs. One can greatly "bum" in a business in providing a product/service that nobody really wants.

Action: Do an objective research on what your target market wants. Are you on the right track or do you need to change your perspective?

    7) A successful Marketer is hard working and efficient:

I am sorry to be the one bringing you the bad news but building a highly successful business that pays well requires hard work, at least in the beginning. The good news is that if you possess the first six qualities of a successful Internet Marketer, creating your empire will actually be a fun journey! Most very successful Internet Millionaires keep working although they do not need to just because they enjoy doing so. I know I will...

Action: Ask yourself if you are committed in providing the necessary effort to create a very successful business. Do you tend to procrastinate and are an artist at creating excuses for not getting the job done? If you honestly feel you sometimes lack the strength to finish what you start, do not despair, there is help.

    8) A successful Marketer is accountable for his results:

As much as Millionaires are responsible for their great success, as much they take blame and then action for their failures. When something goes wrong, they do not blame other people or circumstances for the results. Right away, they sit back, analyse and learn from the situation and change whatever needs to be corrected.

Action: Honestly analyse how you react when faced with a non-optimal result. Do you blame others? Are you 100% accountable for the results you bring in? If not, how can you manage your business so that your success are the direct results of your actions?

    9) A successful Marketer constantly renews his business: Let's face it what was hot yesterday will be common today and outdated tomorrow. A successful Marketer keeps up to date on the current trends and adapts to the ever changing needs of its clients.

Action: Do you know what your market needs and wants? Ask yourself if you are offering a product that is still popular and in demand TODAY?

    10) A successful Marketer knows how to leverage the strength of other successful Marketers:

One cannot do everything alone. Most, if not all, successful Marketers have learned to use the power of joining their force with others. Furthermore, a successful Marketer doesn't try to re-invent the wheel. While creating a successful empire, the busy marketer leverages and uses what others have already created to make work easier and more proficient. A sucessful Marketer knows and uses the power of joint venturing with other great marketers.
