Can you help me? Is this NICHE too complicated to go for?

Hey guys. As you can see on my post count, I've been a lurker for some time and now I've finally decided to step up and take some action by creating this thread. I dare to ask for help because I've noticed the awesome contribution of this awesome community, so if I get only one idea out of this question, it would make a big difference for me.

As the title states, I'm struggling to figure out a future "email marketing strategy" for the "PREGNANCY" (pregnancy lifestyle, health kind of niche). I want to create a niche content rich website, build a list and monetize everything through affiliate marketing.

So far so good, but here are few problems which I still can't figure out :
  1. How can I successfully group every pregnant woman into my autoresponder? I mean, there's a big difference between the needs of a woman who's in the first month of her pregnancy and one who has few more weeks before birth.
I've thought about monthly or even weekly selection - that means 9 lists (9 months) or even 40 ( 40 weeks), so each time a woman passes a week/month, they will be taken to the next list. I can group them using a "pregnancy ticker" which I can hook to the autoresponder that will automatically group them according to their "due date" selection on the opt-in on my website.

Even so, the big problem is that women which sign up late in their pregnancy will lose the connection I will try to establish from the beginning of the newsletter + important products that could work for them too but they don't get the chance to see them..It's like they have a wall in their back and they can't see my previous work, just what I have "left" for them. ( I really hope you understand what I'm saying )

Do you guys have any ideas on how can I make this work? Maybe I don't know things about what autoresponders can do?

  2. If there's nothing I can do, is this niche still working? I mean, putting all women into one "box" would mean finding very similar needs, like maybe "no pounds during pregnancy", but this system would still have some problems. For example, if a women subscribes in her 8th month, she doesn't have time to see the "step-by-step" pre-sell I will organize and they won't even be able to see the product I recommend, which is bad.

Am I right or I have a bad approach to the situation?

I'd also like to mention that this is my first "IM project" and a friend of mine advises me to quit this niche because it sounds too complicated, but it's a challenge for me and I thought I should give it a little bit more thought.

What is your advice? Should I find an "easier" niche?

So guys, any kind of ideas would be greatly appreciated !

Ps. If you're working in the same niche and you don't want to write it down here because of any reason, a pm would be so nice!

Thanks in advance for your contribution!

    To answer number 1:

I wouldn't worry about segmenting your list. Every pregnant woman on your list is going to be constantly moving from stage to stage, which would require constant re-segmenting.

But there are TONS of issues that all pregnant woman go through, no matter what stage they're in. So you can definitely use that universal content to resonate with your list.

And if you send out content that only resonates with a certain percentage, no biggie. That happens with literally every email list.

If you do want to segment it, I would create two segments -- the first half of pregnancy and the second (almost like a "beginner's" and "intermediate"). I think this would allow you to cater to the different needs women have during each stage, while not over-complicating your email list.

(You could also break it into trimesters. This would make sense to the people opting in, and you'll be able to find loads of information that's specific to each trimester. This will help you create your content.)

    To answer number two:

I have no clue if you've picked a good niche. But really, it doesn't matter if it's your first project.

The lessons you will learn and the experience you will gain are extremely valuable, no matter the outcome. So, I say go for it, despite what other people tell you. It sounds like you're ready to take the plunge anyway.

For people who opt-in too late in your funnel, I would say they're not actually your target market. You should still promote your product to them, but I wouldn't expect too much out of this segment.

If you can successfully market to women in the earlier stages of pregnancy, I would consider your first project a win.

    And finally:

This is a very important time in people's lives. Don't forget that in your content.

You have to legitimately and genuinely care about helping these people. If you do, it will shine through your content, you'll be able to build real relationships with your audience, you will help them in this area of their lives, and you will achieve the success you're looking for.

    (That's the idea, anyway )

    Good luck, and have fun!

Hi, this is really very easy.

Make a landing page where you have selections. They pic one button depending on their group. You could 1-3 month 4-6 and 7 to birth. They pick a button click on it, go your opt in for that list and boom - done.

Q-2, Yes, this is a great niche. you help them trhough their prego time. Then you start with Heathly Mommy Healthy Baby and teach her what to do to shed prego pounds and stay healthy. You teach her all the stuff for the kid. You then guide her step by step until the kid leaves for college.

      That's a long term niche.

First of all, thanks for the great tips, they really motivate me to move forward!

Maybe I am a little bit overwhelmed and I can't think straight or you guys missed an important point :

      For example.

      1. Woman in Week 11 (=ending of first trimester) clicks on "first trimester" --> Autoresponder puts her into "List 1". She gets mails destined for the needs of the first trimester for only 2 weeks

      2. When she reaches Week 13(= second trimester), she will still receive mails about the first trimester needs, because the autoresponder can't figure out when to put her into "List 2" ( which is destined for Trimester 2 )

-----> She will receive some irrelevant mails ---> Better chance of losing her

Am I getting this wrong ? Does this make sense? I can't even figure this out in my head, damn.

The questions you're asking here is related to automation.

So I think the important question here is what automation capability your autoresponder have ?

For example in GetResponse you will have to go and manually look for people who finished needed time frame in the list and then move them between lists once a week.

In AWeber I am not even sure you can move people from list to list. Subscribers have to sign up to the new list.

Or perhaps you going to use Infusionsoft or Ontraport which has excellent automation and can remove and sign tags and move people between sequences in predictable amount of time. In this case you will have to just set it up and forget.

I'm going to either simplify this for you, or make it more complicated. Besides aiming for particular stages of pregnancy, you might also want to look at number of pregnancies.

It seems to me that there's a big difference between the concerns of a woman having her first versus her second or more.

Since this is your first project, you may want to niche it down another notch and aim at women having their first. You could niche it even further by looking at, say, women in the early twenties vs. women in the their thirties. While there will be a lot of overlap, there will also be differences you can address.

Research should be fairly straightforward, as I've noticed that women tend to collect in support groups, both online and off. Also, women who have had children love to give advice to "newbies", so you should have no shortage of potential material.

            I had a similar thought...

Since you are just getting started, you seem to be way overcomplicating this to the point of paralysis.

I would pick ONE thing to do (i.e. drill down to one specific niche, for instance women in their 30's or 40's in the early stages of their first pregnancy), and focus exclusively on developing that.

Once you have got that where you are happy with it, you now have a solid foundation from which you can expand outward. Plus, presumably, you will have some feedback from your users on what that direction should be.

Maybe you hear that there should be content for younger first-time moms. Maybe they want 2nd and 3rd trimester content. Maybe they want more medical content, or more cultural content, or more shopping advice. You'll never know until you get out there with SOMETHING, and start trying to connect with an audience.

Start where you are most comfortable and knowledgeable, make it awesome, then grow organically from there.

In addition to being much less intimidating, that is a roadmap that is actually realistic to follow.

I would love to thank everyone for the awesome advices, and yes you are right, maybe I am overcomplicating this way too much. Thing is, I have too many ideas in my head, and I really feel this niche requires a well thought strategy, because my target audience's needs are so different and change constantly.

Thanks again for the great advices, I've decided to focus on "early stages of pregnancy" with a little twist, then expand.
