@John - Have you purchased products from Tiger Direct before? This is a great deal but I am always cautious when buying things from a site I am unfamiliar with?

Just about every piece of hardware I've purchased in the last five years has been from Tiger Direct.

I purchase from tiger direct all the time, mostly hardware, but on occasion software. I have had no issues. Let me also say that I absolutely love Dragon Naturally Speaking for putting together blog posts and the like. I would be all over that if I didn't already own the software...

Yep...I actually knocked out some articles using it. It worked for me right out of the box. Just remember that dictation is different than normal speaking. So you will have to say "comma, period, new paragraph" and the like unless you want a ton of editing on the other end.

but besides that...the program is worth much more than 50 bucks...

    Yea, I use it too.

It's amazing just how accurate this program is. The is the best program as far as speech recognition goes.

Agreed that Dragon is a good product. I dictated much of my new book using it.
You have to teach it some words that aren't in a standard dictionary (like RSS or autoresponder, etc.) and it takes a lot of system power to run quickly but is worth the investment, especially at that price.

It really is an awesome app. I recommend getting some better headphones for it though. I bought the Logitech ClearChat PC Wireless headphones and I totally love them. No cord! Plus, the built-in mic is of a much higher quality and this makes DNS recognize your speech better.

Yep, no comparison. DNS simply kicks ass. I have DNS 8.0 on one desktop and 9.0 on another. I haven't upgraded to 10 yet (didn't really see a need to), but everyone I know who uses DNS 10 loves it.

Tip: You can sometimes find DNS 4.0, 5.0 etc. on sale on eBay for super cheap.

That's a great deal. Glad you've posted that.

I've been using Dragon for a while, and for those that don't have it, for $50 you won't be disappointed.

I just used Dragon about an hour ago as a matter a fact. I sat out in my backyard & dictated an article into my voice recorder. Then I came inside, plugged my recorder into my computer and had Naturally Speaking dictate the recording for me. That's how I usually do it.

To the person who asked about Tigerdirect, I've ordered many things from them & I have no complaints.

As for Windows voice recognition compared to Dragon Naturally Speaking, well I've done a side by side comparison, putting the same voice input into both programs simultaneously and lets just say Microsoft's voice software will frustrate you to hell as it's next to worthless, while Dragon will amaze the hell out of you with it's accuracy even right out of the box.

    Niche demon,

Comparing Dragon 10 to every other voice reconigtion program ever made is like comparing a $450,00 Bentley to a '63 vw bug. It's in a class by its self.

I've used Dragon since version 5, (still have the disc!) and this version 10 is absolutely incredible! It used to take weeks of training the program to make it work, but v10 is good to go right after you install it! Give it a try, I'll bet you love it after a week!

ship it to you for free. I'm like JR, just don't buy any hardware and very

I thought DNS automatically "knows" when to put in
    punctuation.

(I was under the impression this was one of the selling
points of DNS when compared to Windows Speech).

    No?

      No?
It will insert commas & periods.

For paragraphs you have to say "new paragraph". Same thing for other punctuation like semicolons, hyphens, etc.

Actually, try a whole lot easier. No more mouse clicking to open your software and then clicking to format the letter, article, etc. and finally no more typing the bloody thing until your fingers ache. You can now control your entire PC by your voice.

Actually, 10.0 really works right out of the box. There is maybe 5 minutes of "training" to set it up in the beginning and that is it.

Lets just put it this way, Remember Windows Millennium and how great that worked? I am so glad DNS has higher standards than that. They wont release something before it is ready to be released, unlike Microsoft.

      No?
Personally, I have had some problems in this area and so I typically do not run with that feature turned on but it is supposed to recognize it but for me it is just as easy to tell it all these things and know they are where I want them rather than to leave it up to some dumb machine. That is just my opinion, though so take it however you wish.

Windows Speech w/ Vista doesn't work
in my web browser or most other programs.
The only way it works is when I have WordPad
open. I then have to copy-paste the text afterwards.

Will DNS work in ANY program or will I have the
same restriction in this area (I would like for it
to work in text fields in my browser)?

There are some programs which will show up on the DNS Toolbar as non standard and the dictation may respond a bit funny on them but it is mostly with online forms and stuff that I see that happening. I have yet to find a software like office and the alike that DNS does not work with. That is not to say that I have tried them all, because I don't have that kind of money but I have used it on quite a few apps without any problems. You can even command your desktop and open up individual apps all by command.

Bah! I just bought the standard version from Amazon yesterday for $29.99. It's probably for the best, I hate mail-in rebates anyway. I do hope that it is better than 9. I rarely used that one because it never saved me any time. Even after lengthy training sessions I still had to make a lot of corrections. I have heard that this version is better at recognition. We will see.

FYI, for those that have Vista 64-bit. I'm not sure what exact version is in the box, but apparently version 10.0 does not work with Vista 64, but there is a patch on their website that will update it to version 10.1 which does support Vista 64.

    I'm glad I got it.

...now if I could only get the automatic
commas & periods to work properly

during dictation I'll be happy with
    the software.

In the demo video online it shows
this feature (I believe it's called
    Natural Punctuation) working
    with colors. But it barely
    works properly on my
    PC.

I have tried and tried but it takes the pauses you make when you are dictating as the place to put the commas and the change in tone to place the required punctuation. I have never been able to master that part of the software but I still can write a 500 word article in under 10 minutes all from scratch with nothing on paper.

    That's discouraging.

    The demo video made it
    look SO easy.

    I don't want to regret
    purchasing it just because
    everyone says how great
    it is.

    But honestly...

    ...that's the reason
I bought the software. It was so I didn't
have to say "period" and "comma" every
    time I wanted some punctuation.

If I would have known the automatic
punctuation was crap I would have
    stuck with the built-in Vista
    speech recognition.

for those who queried as to whether Dragon NaturallySpeaking works on Web forms or not, I am dictating this using Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 9.5. So far I've not had to make any corrections.

I've tried out Microsoft speech recognition software and Dragon beats the hell out of them

I have yet to find an application that Dragon NaturallySpeaking does not work with it certainly works with all the office programmes.

personally I see no reason for me to upgrade to version 10. I'll wait until version 11 comes out and then I might consider it depending upon my financial position.

When Dragon makes a mistake it is incredibly easy to correct it.
I will recommend Dragon NaturallySpeaking to anybody.
I have never tried it with automatic punctuation, but after a short while you get used to having to dictate punctuation, I mean if you are dictating to a secretary you would generally have to put punctuation in as well.

Okay, this whole thing was dictated to Dragon NaturallySpeaking and I have not made any corrections.
