    Building a classifieds website Could be profitable if you...

    * Create the site around a niche that needs a classifieds site.
    * Advertise properly to build your base of users.

      I think he's asking if it's profitable to advertise on CL??

      It can be profitable if you are a skilled service provider. Or if you want to flip (buy and resell for profit) physical goods, yes.

    There are only a handful of profitable classified ad sites among thousands of them. So unless you have a really unique idea for one, then I'd say no, it's probably not a good idea.

    I don't think its really that profitable but I would say building a classified website based on a specific location like the city you live might bring you some good results.

    According to my point of view, to design a website is really profitable, but you should have to focus on that place where you get more targeted visitors about your product and also be sure that whatever you want to promote is currently based on the latest market trends.

    It could be profitable, but the main problem is that classifieds website will only be successful if you had:

    a) very unique website idea, which would make a new and unseen way to sale / trade / buy

    or/and

    b) huge database of ads prepared on launch. Because no one will post to (more or less) empty classifieds website.

    You would probably need to learn to live eat and breath the site especially at the start and then sprinkle it with a little dash of luck and it may come through, but from what your saying it sounds like it would not work for you, as by your words "can I make money from it" and "do you think its hard to get followers" etc and by that it seems you only want to do it because it sounds like some cheap fast money and that probably wont work for given the time you would probably need to build it out.

      yes men i know that i should dedicate time to the website, but i have the doubt if is possible make money with a classifieds website? is very hard?

        It depends on the competition and how you monetize.

        Target local. Target Niche. Target low competition markets.

        There is a company that has classified sites in cities across Canada but each city is targeted individually. So:

        UsedOttawa.com, UsedToronto.com, UsedThunderBay.com, UsedCalgary.com, UsedVancouver.com, etc.

        You can also target a niche like: Used Car Classifieds, Sports and Equipment Classified.

        Most classified sites offer free ads. They make money by:

        Charging for enhancements like: embed a URL, add a Photo, "Sticky" the ad at the top of pages, etc.

        Sell commercial advertising in headers, footers and sidebars.

        AdSense/CPA offers and banners.

        Your success will depend how hard and smart you work.

        Can you find a USP (Unique Selling Position) to distinguish yourself among the competition?

        Can you find a niche large enough and active enough to support a niched classified ads site?

        Can you find advertisers for your paid banners and ad spaces?

        To answer your question is easy. Yes classified ad sites can be very profitable.

        To say whether you have the knowledge and skill to make it work for you is a completely different question.

        Look at how you can enter the market and get yourself noticed.

    I started a site that I guess is in some ways (or eventually will be) a spin on the classifieds model (IMRepo.com). I'm already seeing some success just a couple of weeks after launching. What 'tryinhere' said is definitely on the money - you seriously need to live and breathe the site of it's going to be a success. I've been posting products everyday. It gets tiring, but the traffic it's bringing is really encouraging me to continue. Have you cornered a specific niche or geographic location of the market that you're going to target? If not, I think you'll struggle without a completely new USP, which is unlikely.

    you may try opening niche job classified website.. like wordpress jobs. This is what i am thinking actually.. opening few niche websites and charging $500 or more for posting. I have plan in mind for that.

      If you doubt it can make money then you probably wont, there are some good replies further down on where the money is made, see if they can work for you.

      $500 would be a tall order for most newer people to get their head around especially at the the beginner newbie stage they would be struggling to charge $5 for an upgraded or enhanced listing. It would need to one kick arse site to be pulling in $500 for a listing / never seen a classified site demand that type of money before, but i suppose they may exist and anything can and is possible, sounds like a good outcome if you can make that happen.

    Yes it is good but you need to do lots of promotion work on it other wise your effort will go in vain. If you have budget to do paid marketing then take this step other wise will required lots of time to do its promotion. The proper SEO will also work if you have capability to do it.

    If you have a unique idea about it then I'd say its profitable. But you need to work hard for it to become popular and gain visitors. You can start building one focusing on a certain area first so it'll be easy to promote or manage. If you are really into it then go for it because having doubts will lead you nowhere. You need to try it for yourself.
