The tools required to start a niche site... are too expensive...

So, I decided a week ago that I wanted to give niche sites a shot (I'm new to the whole IM scene) and did my research and got a general gist of how to find my niche. After watch numerous videos, clips, and guides I began my own attempt to find my perfect keyword.

It wasn't long until I ran into my first obstacle. In fact, all the excitement and momentum I had came to a screeching halt all in about the first fifteen minutes when I dawned on the obvious realization that every tool for Keyword research (minus Google Adsense) and SEO was gonna cost me around $100 each. When I added up all the tools I needed, Longtail pro, SEMrush, SEOmoz, my savings account was in to take a decent hit.

Now I am not planning on giving up on my soon to be niche site yet, but I am just wondering: Does it really cost a beginner $300 (plus the $100 or so recurring fees) to start a niche site?!

You don't need any of those tools. Use Google Keyword Planner to find your keywords, which is obviously free.

Those kw tools help you find more keywords, but you don't need any of them. I don't use any of them myself. Google Planner is plenty enough.

Ah, but what if I am trying to do SEO research as well? Are the tools and metrics that SEMrush provide available through another means?

Also as a side note for those that may get the impression I am cheating the makers of the tools of the price they ask for, I have every intention of purchasing all the programs mentioned above and give the programmers/founders their rightful dues if after my first niche site providing that I want to pursue creating niche sites. I'm just not ready to commit the money to find out that I am actually horrible at creating niche sites or what have you.

Your first mistake is looking for the "perfect keyword". Instead, if you are planning on doing SEO you want a niche with A LOT OF GOOD KEYWORDS.

However, there are plenty of other ways to get traffic including social media that don't require keyword research.

If you're set on keyword research and SEO Market Samurai has a free 30 day trial and some decent training. 30 days is plenty of time to find a good niche. And there's free options and trials for other resources as well.

Also note that there should be factors other than keywords when picking a niche, such as how much content is available for the niche and if you have access to relevant artwork and other media relevant to the niche...not to mention your own skills, interests and knowledge related to a niche.

Look at it this way. Where else can you start a business for less than $1,000 ? Add up the expense of starting a brick and mortar store. Or starting a franchise. etc...

Starting a Internet business from home is cheap when you compare it to the normal routes of running a business.

What interests you? What is your expertise? What can you write on and on and on?

When I started my blogs, I had no idea what keywords are, backlinks, pageranks - nothing! I just started writing on what interested me. I also connected with the people of similar interests. I did not need any of these tools. It's as simple as that!

I also went the route you went through, believe me, at the end of it all, I had a bad headache and I did not pursue in that direction lol

You have been given plenty of good advice with regard to keywords. As to the rest:

You need a website - you can start off by using blogspot. Its free
Go to youTube set up a channel there and create simple videos to promote your products. This can be done for free too and put a copy of the videos on your website as well
Both of the above belong to Google and Google loves Google.

Don't try to to get too big too soon or to spend too much money. Take it slow and easy and learn first. There is plenty of information out there if you look for it
