Image Alt text for linking images

Hi,

I am currently working on a e-commerce website, implementing Image Alt text for all the already existing pages from scratch.

Most of our used pictures are links to other categories e.g. A picture of a fashionable woman with a written text on the picture that says "Shop Women", linking to the womens' section of the page with clothing, accessories etc.

My Question:
What should the Alt text look like? As it is mostly linking pictures I feel it would be stupid to say e.g. for the above mentioned example:
"Fashionable woman holding a bag" or just "Shop Women"

but rather

"
Shop Women's clothes, Beauty products, sports gear & more from your favorite stores"

Greatly appreciate your help!

Thanks,

- Mo

    It depends what you want.

If you want an SEO boost use keywords that you are trying to target like "best leather purse" for Google.

If you want to drive traffic use a call to action like "Click Image to see catalog" for your visitors.

I think it's always best to have the ALT text describe the image, with the use of keywords if it's for SEO. If the image is of a blue widget then the alt text should be "blue widget" or maybe "best blue widget" or similar.

ALT text shouldn`t be stuffed with your main KW`s. Include something that will make sense and be valuable in terms of semantic search.

If your main KW is plumbing, then use something like "pipes or solution to bad pipes is actually getting a good plumber to solve leaking"

I used here pipes, plumber, leaking... your main kw in this context perfectly suites... semantic search!

It used to be that adding keywords for each alt tag worked well, now it is much better to use LSI words or phrases, or CTA's and to leave some blank or give them something like red purse.

You do not want to be over optimized, but you don't want a bunch of labels from your graphics people, who in my experience label the images according to their own internal naming scheme.
