How much can you charge for banner spaces?

Hey warriors,

I have some questions regarding private advertising, or rather selling banner spaces on a website to other companies or businesses.

How much can you charge for them? Is it based on the total amount of monthly visitors the site gets?

Or is there a foundation for how much you can charge?

This is a monetization method that MIGHT become possible in the future with a website I'm working on, so it would be nice to see if anyone has a slight hunch on how much banner spaces (where companies can place their ads, like adsense) costs.

I don't know, just thought I'd give it a shot and see if anyone has some info.

  • There's a nice little article by Yaro Starak that I came across here:

It may give you a good starting point on things to think about.

It all depends on the quality of the traffic, the niche and the retention of the visitors. Is your site a comedy site? If so, a banner ad may be be quite cheap because the demographics of the audience varies. If however your site is niche specific, then you can charge quite a bit i.e. $200 a month.

I once had a niche site about hot tubs. I ranked number one on Google but the Adsense earnings were quite low so instead of creating any more banner ads and making peanuts, I decided to charge hot tub sellers per lead. I used to get around 150+ unique visitors a day and I managed to get 60 people a day to join a list of mine.

A month down the line, the email list grew to 2,500. I then sold the leads to various hot tub companies for $50 a lead. Needless to say, I made quite a bit of money from this business.

What I'm trying to say is that banner ads may not always be the best option depending on the type of site you have. If you have a product niche site, you can always capture emails and sell them as leads.

I usually come up with pricing myself and base it on a number of different factors..

    -Traffic
-Will the banner be rotating or not
-How many banner spots will there be
-Judgement on clicks based on my current setup

That is a great article you shared, stoltingmediagroup. Thank you! Very insightful!
And, it also states what I already was about to say: it depends on traffic, rankings and testing the price would be a great idea before you decide on a final price!
