Genius Marketing by VisitIthaca.com?

In internet marketing circles, we talk about doing all we can to eliminate website leaks so our visitors do not get distracted.

Ithaca NY's tourism website at VisitIthaca.com, is taking the contrarian view and purposely encouraging visitors to click the Key West tourism website because of all the snow.

The genius is all the free publicity coverage this stunt is getting. I learned about it on the TV news. As of now their headline "That's it. We surrender. Winter, you win. Key West anyone?" has 683,000 results in Google. Of course the danger is you are sending people away from your website and possibly to a competitor.

Does anyone agree or disagree in VisitIthaca.com cleverness? Can you share other real life examples of applying a similar idea?

Thats my hometown and it is cold as **** here. It is good marketing if they have a motive of some sort to send them to the other website. The only reason people are coming to Ithaca in the heart of winter is for the colleges so, yes in my opinion this is a very good strategy.

Ithaca seems to be pretty damn popular for tourist attraction and has the same amount of restaurant chairs per capita that NYC. I doubt they are losing much by sending them to another website.
