Scary New Trend...Popular Sites Being Hacked

I am starting to see a scary new trend. And I wasn't even going to post this
because I didn't want to give some other nut cases out there any ideas but
people need to be warned or their PCs could turn into a wasteland.

This is essentially what's going on in a nutshell.

It appears that some person or persons is looking to see what the biggest
current events of the day are, going to those sites about them and hacking
the ones that are easy to hack. Naturally, a site like CNN is going to be
tough, but people who are putting up daily news sites, you know, the regular
folk like us, they're the ones getting hacked.

I went to look up info on Paul McCartney's concert at Citi Field last night
and I found no less than 3 sites that were hacked where Kaspersky gave
me a virus warning.

And this has been going on for about a week or so now.

Please be careful to ONLY go to sites where you are reasonably sure
that they're going to be safe, like a CNN of other reputable site.

At the very least, make sure you have virus protection and that it's updated.

I've been lucky so far because I'm protected, but this is some scary stuff
that's going around.

Like I said, I was hesitant to even bring this up but if I didn't innocent
people could be walking into a hornet's nest and I just couldn't let that
happen.

Anyway, be careful.

** EDIT **

It is quite possible that these people are putting up these sites knowing
they'll be visited and they're the ones installing the trojans or whatever.

I just thought of that. This may not be a hacking job at all.

Actually yeah, I think that's the case. Very recently some popular news sites reported that putting up content on current trends and dropping links everywhere (Twitter, etc.) is a trend among malware producers. It isn't hard to pick up one from twitters trends - that's why I'm avoiding to click any links to sites other than the big ones, such as CNN, NYTimes, etc.

You are right. And you've been victimized by this, haven't you.

It does sound pretty systematic and planned. And whoever it is seems more bent on creating havoc than actually doing like a global destruction via the Internet. Just destroying/annoying folks like us.

I'm a firm believer in using anti-virus, anti-spyware programs that are, ummm, off the beaten path so to speak. So the really popular programs like Norton and MacAffee are figured into the creepo's plans. But off-beat programs like maybe AVG are less likely to be circumvented and therefore more likely to "take a lickin' and keep on tickin'".

What else can we do to protect ourselves agains this?

Especially when it's OUR sites that get the creepo's attention!

Thank you for bringing this up, Steve.

That is scary -- hacking or not. I'm very lucky that I haven't had much of an issue with viruses, but the problem will likely only get worse. As far as hacking -- I've been going back and forth with myself on building standard HTML pages vs. Wordpress. I know that any site can be vulnerable, but the risks are so much higher with WP, no matter how easy it is to work with That's a bit off topic, but still...

I think it's probably a bunch of phishers and scammers who monitor the hot trends and build daily news sites with the intention of capitalizing off of hot trend traffic rather than hackers who hack them.

You're probably right and upon further reflection, that's probably exactly
      what these SOBs are doing.

They should all be sentenced to life in front of a firing squad.

I wish people who participated in these hacking and other negative schemes would instead focus on the positive side of life, and how to help others. Gosh, we could have cures for all types of illnesses out there, relief for starving nations and for people suffering from poor economic and other issues.
