Can google "read" powerpoints and pdf's?

I've been learning powerpoint 2013 recently and came across a section on putting "alt" text with pictures, similar to the way you do it in wordpress, but of course it is only mentioned as a way for vision impaired users to get an idea what your picture was about.

This got me to thinking about the content of my powerpoint presentation and whether google can read the text for indexing purposes. I know the big g can't see inside of videos (yet), but it hadn't occurred to me if they could index the content of .pdf's or .ppt's.

Does anyone know for sure if google can index content in either of these two formats?

Yes they can now and have been able to for the past number of years, although they prefer html content (the spiders) they will also crawl PDF docs

Yes they can..that's why document sharing sites have "good treatment" with google results page..

They can read all the text related documents such as Docs, PDFs, PPTs..The things that they cannot read is archived files like rar, zip, video and mp3 files and flash files such as swfs.

been wanting to know this for a while, thanks! I assumed that they couldn't read PDFS though because I thought a PDF was officially an image, like a jpg or png.

Yes, and thank god for it too. I have found so many interesting PDFs online, just by googleing some keywords. So, don't worry about it! Your presentation will definitely get indexed.
