Best way for a beginner to start making money online - Your suggestions?

50 replies
So it seems like the most asked question on this forum. Beginners trying to figure out in which direction they should take there first step, a way where they can earn their first small bit of money to inspire them onto bigger things, to show them that money really can be made on the internet. So I thought it might be fun to see what suggestions people can come up with for what method of internet marketing you would recommend a beginner to start with.

To get things going, here is the first properly profitable thing I did online.

eBay. It's pretty much where I started, and where a lot of other people start, the only problem is that it's not free. However you can start out with very, very little investment.

When I first started I was 15 and using my grandmas debit card (with her permission, of course). I saved up about £80 and bought some designer label sunglasses from an eBay power seller who promised they were genuine. I was young and naive so of course I believed him. I managed to sell about 4 pairs before I got warned from eBay to stop selling fake items or I would get banned. In the end I sold the rest off to a relative to make back my money while he went down to the pub and sold them off for a profit.

After that I learned my lesson. The next lot of good I bought was a sample order of unbranded motorcycle gloves from Alibaba. They sold pretty well, making between £5 and £10 in profit for each pair of gloves. After creating my template I could get 3 of these posted in 20 minutes, and I could wrap them in another 20 minutes, and I could drop them off at the post office while walking the dog in another 20 minutes. £15-£30 isn't huge money, but to a 15 year old it was massive. And all it took was an hour of work each day (plus about two months of saving lunch money and researching before that).

I think eBay is an amazing place to start. Tonnes of traffic and all you need is to spend time creating an inviting title and description. A few good pictures, set the price stupidly low and wait for the bids to come in.

The only down side is you need a bit of money to invest. However, there are ways to do these even if you are almost penniless. Find something in your house right now that you don't use but could be valuable. Sell it. Then use that money and walk down to the closest charity shop. Find something valuable looking and in good condition, buy it, then sell that. Rinse and repeat. Sure, chances are you might mess up a couple of times and buy something that won't sell. But keep trying until you make your first profit. I promise you, from that moment onwards you will be hooked!

So to all the people out there making money online. What would you suggest is the best way for a beginner to start?

    Ben, great post.

    To answer your question: In your case, I would say a combination of eCommerce and affiliate marketing. eBay will have provided you with a great education thus far. I say build on that education. The next logical step is eCommerce and/ or affiliate marketing. The beauty of extending to eCommerce on your own website, for instance, is this:

    1. You're building a valuable property (that can eventually be sold);
    2. You have more control;
    3. Ability to grow list and bookmarkets;
    4. Control of payment mechanism;
    5. Far easier to build traffic.

    It seems the way to go in your case, but really, it's just one possible idea.

      Thanks for some good advice there Tom! Although I have been earning a full time living from IM for the last 7 years But your advice is still sound!

      I just like the idea of giving the beginners a path they can walk down. The scariest part about any IM projects is the first step. Hoping we can give some advice that will push a few people towards that first step.

    Freelancing is the way to go for noobs. I guarantee you can be on $100+ a day within 3 months if you work smart and create good relationships with your clients..

    You will be working for other internet marketers 80% of the time, so it will teach you a lot about how online businesses work and operate, all while getting paid to help out..

      Very sound advice. Excellent, actually. The newcomer has a huge mountain to climb (learning curve) and combining it with income opportunities is a clever way to go. If the newcomer has any desirable, marketable skills then I would say it's possible to be earning 3 figures easily within those 3 months.

      Some ideas:

      - Written Content;
      - Video Content;
      - Social Media Management;
      - General VA Work (following written instruction);
      - Forum Posting;
      - Email Support.

      This is actually brilliant advice. I actually started studying SEO when I was 17. A year after that I started working writing gigs on fiverr. It's not great money, in fact it was terrible. But it wasn't the money I was doing it for. Everyone of my clients was in IM, and most of them were successful enough that the could afford to hire writers instead of doing it themselves. This meant I could look at their websites and see what they were doing in terms of SEO. Then, if I found clients who had not done any on-page or off-page SEO, I could offer to do for them the same type of things that my successful clients had had done to their sites.

      I think Freelancing is a very realistic way for many to make some nice income online.

      Although I prefer more passive income, you can start by working on your writing skills and getting new clients by offering your services.

    If you want to make money without having much to get started with you can always market a skill you have. e.g. article writing, making logos etc.

    You can also be smart about it and outsource your jobs. Find people who need things like content, business cards, logos, posters using classifies like craigslist, gumtree or freelancer sites like Freelancer, odesk, elance. Look on fiverr and get someone to do the job for you. Take the profit and repeat.

    You can then reinvest in your own sites and quality paid traffic.

    EBay is indeed a great way to make some money. You can start with no investment, like you said one could simply sell some items they find lying around the house and move up from there.

    Freelancing is also a great way for beginners to start earning an income. Everyone has a skill, so all beginners need to do is figure out what that is!

    I agree with Fiverr being a good place to start (and learn). The real money with Fiverr is with the upgrades though. You'll need to become a level 2 seller before you can add any additional services (upgrades) and make decent money.

    Another way to make money starting out with no knowledge is brokering services. Basically connecting buyers with sellers. For example, If you don't have a list, but know people who want to buy solos, find someone who offers a good solo, for a good price. Then, just get the best deal you can from the solo provider (seller) and then charge the buyer a premium price. You'll make a little off the top each time. Even better if you use the same provider over and over, it's easier to get good deals.

    Both you and the seller benefit from the arrangement and it's a great way to get to know people in the industry.

    That's my 2 cents!

      I'm afraid this won't work, LiMooN. The model is viable, indeed, but not for a newcomer. What you'll do is spend the next few months toiling away on something that will make you a projected 20 bucks over the next 12 months. As I believe I mentioned in another post yesterday, while AdSense monetized sites can make a high income, from my experience you need to achieve the following:

      1. High-Paying Keywords.
      2. Volume, Targeted Traffic.
      3. Volume AdSense Sites.

      To achieve the above is more assuredly not newbie-friendly, unfortunately. Your best bet, without question, if you are keen to go the website route, is to put together an affiliate blog: learn how to do so, how to monetize, how to grow traffic and a related list.

    I totally agree that ebay is a great place to start. Another similar option is Amazon's FBA business which can be done with a small budget to begin with.

    One of the differences is that ebay is much less strict about how things are done by sellers while Amazon has a set of rules that you have to follow.

    1. Choose a profitable and evergreen niche - With lot's of room for consistent sales

    2. Create daily CONTENT around your chosen niche subject

    3. Distribute some of that content around the web - YouTube, Blog, PDF's, Articles, Guest blog posts, Other video sites

    4. Gain targeted traffic from this over time this will mount up

    5. Place a call to action near your posted content that asks people to join your email lists for more info on XYZ

    6. Build relationships through your previously created content that can help them further their education after joining your lists

    7. Bundle up your content after creating it for 30 days solid and package it up into a product that can be sold to your lists

    8. Keep repeating this process until you have a HUGE responsive list, you have built up enough content to create a WIDE range of products you can sell to those lists.

    9. Now look at adding in HIGH TICKET offers into your product range too - $500 - $5,000 plus range

    10. Now you're building a REAL business around information that people want, NEED and desire.

    Plus of course you're building a TARGETED LIST.

    Sounds hard but this will save you a ton of wasted time, money and lost profits wasting your talents on get paid NOW no future type jobs.

  • This is one of the best threads I have seen on this forum in quite awhile. The answers have all been outstanding.

    My recommendation is very similar to the others in that freelancing is the best place to start. Most importantl,y it will make you money and realistically could make you enough money to do it full time forever if that is the direction you want to take. If that's not your intent, with freelancing you can basically learn many great skills while also earning a decent sum.

    It is similar to getting paid to go college.

    Hey buddy, I will give my 2 pence here...

    I would say the easiest way to actually start earning money is *believe it or not* list building... here is a framework to follow for those that don`t know...

    **Find a niche that is hungry, passionate, desperate, rabid...

    Check this by seeing if that market has any high liked pages on facebook, any high viewed youtube videos, lot`s of search terms in the google keyword planner, does "for dummies" have a book about it, are their lot`s of other marketers promoting etc...

    **Once you do that choose your market and learn about that, what are their pain points, their desires, what is their desired goal and outcome relating to their market...

    Get really clear on that, really clear... look for them on forums, on youtube and where ever they are hanging out...

    Create a free ebook or even better a video series of 3 to 4 videos giving simple but helpful tips that talk about an "overview" process of how they will reach their desired result...

    Have a call to action to your own or an affiliate product in your market, probably best to use an affiliate product when just starting out...

    Do your due diligence though, find out if it converts and is actually an ethical, helpful product that actually solves their solution, if not stay away...

    The ways you can do this are by searching reviews of the product, buying the product yourself, talking the product owner etc...

    Create an email follow up sequence that offers your free video series one day at a time for each video and then create a seperate sequence to run after the initial 3 to 4 days are up using a different content medium and different training, again free and helping the subscriber move closer to their desired goal... Each piece of content has a call to action to a promotion...

    You will be seen as someone who gives value and your list will love you for it... most are just pushing product after product without giving any real value to the market place, stand out and your job is half done already...!!!

    Next is traffic***

    Solo ads, forums, youtube videos, blogging, blog commenting... there are so many ways to drive traffic...

    Traffic will not be the problem, it will be conversions, once you have them sorted you can buy traffic... if you can`t then your niche is not viable...

    In our business we turn solo ad traffic, fb ads and banner ads into profit because we have the conversions down, tweaked and tested and we have a recurring offer in place and a high ticket too...

    So try to find affiliate programs with commissions all the way through their funnel... it will make it much more likely that you build and grow a profitable system if you promote a high converting funnel with recurring and high ticket offers in place...

    If you think about it, going back to your post topic...

    There is no easier way to build a real business online than simply researching a market, getting to know them, create some content they can relate to that helps them and offer them an even more valuable and powerful paid solution to their problem...

    If you can create trust in a value giving sequence first and you position the offer correctly you can go and make sales in any market...

    Now although there are technicalities involved, you can outsource stuff...
    But remember when it comes to the easiest way to build a real business that lasts which is what you want... then list building is the way to go...

    There are plenty of ways to make a quick buck, but will it last, probably not... list building is sustainable and will work for years to come...

    John Reese my friend in the US [well known marketer who is retired] is quoted as saying "If you can make $1 online then you can make $1 Million Online" The secret is making that first $1, and then scaling up.

    Then focus and taking action will get you to where you want to be and will CREATE an income where by you can pay yourself anyone income you want.

    I think taking action every day, you will find out pretty quick that somethings work, and other do not.

    Do not get caught into the trap of buying a gazillion WSO's and doing the next thing that is big.

    Build a list, build a longer term business first, and the money will come soon after.

    By creating your first website and trying to rank it with onpage SEO and some backlinks you will learn ALOT.

    Chose a niche and some affiliate products (clickbank?) you want to promote and create your first wordpress website with some content.

    The whole process of doing that will get you started and you will learn alot by doint it. Later you can consider building a list and creating more and more and more websites!

    When I first started I did the eBay route too. I found a few drop shippers and sold home decor. The only problem with that was there were a few other eBay sellers using the same drop shippers.

    I then went on to building a site (this was before blogs) where I published articles about home decor and included various affiliate links such as books on Amazon. What I like about affiliate marketing is that you don't have to create your own products, which can be time consuming and overwhelming for someone just starting out. All I did was drive traffic to my site by submitting articles to other sites and forum postings.

    I even bought a lot of scam get rich formulas! I was really stupid! I tried ebay too. But that didnt work out. I tried doppshipping. Well, not for every beginner ebay is the best way. Maybe someone even is better in those MLM sh*its.

    Ebay is definitely a great option, but I would recommend moving into affiliate and email marketing. To start you can create your own website with a customized squeeze page of your niche.

    Make sure to invest in an autoresponder such as Aweber and create an opt in on your site and start gaining subscribers. Then you can create follow up messages and promote your affiliate products.

    A great affiliate marketplace is Clickbank

    The most important for a beginner when looking for ways to earn money online is not to instinctively fall for too attractive invites. Would you like to work only 1 hour a day? Earn up to € 6,000 in two weeks! Only 2 hours of work per day for € 2,000 per month! Learn how to earn by clicking! ...and so on. It's important to make a research and be selective (ask directly, search for experiences of others on forums,...)

    Working on internet is a work, in most cases a hard work. You need to invest a lot of time and be prepared to learn a lot. There are no instant results without efforts.

    However... I would also suggest to start with affiliate marketing. Create a blog, write about something that you like, that inspire you and lean how to get traffic. There is a big choice on Click Bank or More Niche (to promote health and beauty products). Or you can submit articles on platforms like HubPages for example.

    I wouldn't suggest in doing things to get money fast because they most of the time don't work long term.

    If you want to build a real business it will take time and lots of effort so I would suggest you do the following:

    1. Pick a niche you are passionate about
    2. Create a brand around that niche with a blog
    3. Build a list of loyal followers
    4. Promote products that will give them value

    Actually it's really that simple but it's something that will make you money for years to come doing what you love.

    If you don't work on something you are passionate about you are not going to make a lot of money and are going to be miserable.

    Building a brand will take more time but you will be glad you did in the future.

    Hope this helps

      Look around your house and begin selling your stuff on eBay and/or Amazon. Reinvest your profits and buy more stuff (yard sales, discount stores, etc.) you can make a profit on and continue to sell on eBay and/or Amazon. Keep going.

      You can also arbitrage (look it up) by selling Amazon products on eBay. Offer for sale on eBay and when customer buys, buy and ship lower-priced product from Amazon.

    Ebay is how i got my first profitable start into online business. I hated driving back and forth to the post office everyday though. Nevertheless i reached powerseller status, and top rated seller status in only 90 days. After that, i figured i knew how to tackle the issue of making money from MY OWN website. It was a mighty feat at first, but now this stuff is easy. Real easy. Good post Ben.

      One of the things with affiliate marketing is you really need to build an audience (list) and trust so they will buy when you recommend a product.

      It is better (especially at first) to limit the number of affiliate offers you promote.

      For this reason you really want to make sure that the products you recommend are well researched.

      You can ask for a freebie from the seller. This is easier if you have proven sales or an existing list. For a member site, like the one you are promoting, you could ask for 3 day or a week access in order to check it out.

      If it comes to it, you can buy the product through your own affiliate link and get it at a discount. Clickbank allows this but other affiliate programs do not so check the ToS.

      Also search Google and look for reviews. You will need to dig around because many reviews are positive reviews by affiliates trying to drive traffic.

      You want your promoted products to:

      1) Be of high quality and value to your audience/niche
      2) Something your audience wants. This gets easier as you build the relationship.
      3) Affiliate friendly. Good support. Few traffic leaks in the sales funnel. Vendor doesn't convert your traffic to their funnel with an opt-in that doesn't carry your affiliate credit.

      As for the reviews on your offer, I read them too.

      If you are uncertain then best to enroll yourself and check it out. Based on the reviews, I would ask the vendor for free access for a short time to check it out myself. If they won't let you check it out to see if it is as bad as the reviews say then I wouldn't promote it. It doesn't sound worth it to pay for a peek.

    Well done Ben West on your ventures with eBay, which shows awesome confidence at only 15. If I may, I'd like to respectfully suggest that what you do now is find a mentor. There are mentors in all niches and their coaching fees are well worth the expense involved. I wish I had done this when I first started, instead of wasting many years and far too much money trying to make it on my own. I finally realized I wasn't going to get anywhere without a mentor --- someone to tell me what to do, and show me how to do it.
    Keep smiling!

    • I'm new to the warrior forum. So please advice me if I'm making any mistake.

      Great post, Ben.
      I was planning to start with E-bay, but had some doubts. I was afraid that I would lose my money, by investing in E-bay. But now I learnt that, first 1 or 2 tries may fail, but later we can make money more than 100 times worth than the amount we lost.

      Many people want to make 10000$ at their first time. But its always good to try for 1 or 2 dollars at the first time. That way we can get 2$ in money and also experience worth 1000.

    Best way to start online and pick up the basic skills is to build a niche site.

    Learn how to set up site and all the steps that go along with it like buying domains, hosting, publishing content, etc.

    Monetize it with affiliate offers or Adsense and make money.

    Anything you do online will require a website of some kind, whether it be a landing page or a full magazine type blog.

  • I've typed this tip on almost every newbie question on how to make money online as a beginner. It's probably because it works so well...

    Borrow/save an $80 to invest in an ad campaign of a 100,000 views in less than 1 day on a website called Adfly.

    Find an affiliate product to promote that sells for $100+, or better yet create your own product to sell for $100+ on a website called ClickBank

    Create a sqeeze page offering free information videos,ebook or mini-course solving a problem relating to the niche of the product you promoting in exchange for the prospects name & email address.

    Send the traffic of a 100,000 views from the ad campaign in adfly to your squeeze page. if the product converts at 1% = 1000 sales at $100+ = $100,000.00 in sales

    Give it a try, see if it will work for you too

    Best wishes in you r IM business

    I'm a noob also. I am considering bundling 5 master resell books with sales pages, and make offer to sell as a business opportunity on craigslist. i would set them completely up with website, hosting, paypal, whatever is needed. they would have to generate the traffic but thats part of having a business.
    has anyone tried this and if so give any advice?
