Having quite a bad week so far... A few of my affiliates are running bad/fraud traffic. Is there any way to spot or avoid this before they even get started? Or is it just part of the game and the risk I take??

I've had this problem before as well.

My best advice is to make sure they're quality affiliates before you approve them to promote your product.

Check their conversion rates on whatever platform you are using first (WarriorPlus, JVZoo, etc.). This should help you determine how good the traffic they send is and can help you avoid something like that in the future.

    Hope this helps!

I think the only way to really prevent this would be manually checking and verifying affiliates. Some affiliate companies like MaxBounty require manual phone verification for new accounts. It's a longer and more strenuous process, but in the end it probably saves them allot of headache!

Look for patterns. Wherever there is fraud there is a pattern. It may be in the email address, it may be in our common element in the username -- there is always something. The more clever fraud guys will mix in some real traffic and sales with fraudulent stuff, but if you keep your eyes open for patterns you can usually spot one

You should warn them first time to drive good traffic but if they continue to send bad quality traffic they should be block.

Must check their traffic sources, CR, transaction report, session IPs before ban them.

If you know that the traffic is from your affiliate, then their affiliate ID should tell you who is responsible for sending the bad traffic.

Assuming you collect such information from your affiliate sign up, you should have a valid email address for every affiliate ID.

Send them a warning, letting them know what is unacceptable about the traffic they are sending and that they may be jeopardizing their membership in your affiliate program.

If the bad traffic persists, ban them from your affiliate program and then send another email letting them know that you have banned them from your program and that they will not be receiving credit from any future traffic they send. It would be rare for an anyone to continue sending traffic to an offer they aren't receiving commissions on.

If, for any reason, you don't have access to your affiliates (i.e. some service controls the affiliates and simply lets them promote your product) you should probably reconsider the affiliate platform you're using.

Having been an affiliate to really good site for years..and...and years LOL
I would say - look at the people you are approving

Read some of the comments on these boards - how many people here are just desperate and ready to do anything for a buck - buy fake likes, do fake stuff, - that is what you are up against

Look for affiliates with an aged site, who are in other networks, have a real site and decent traffic but not huge immediate fake spiked traffic. No offense but Tier 1 countries - US, Canada...maybe UK and AU....

of course US is the major player

The amount of fake bot micro worker traffic from some countries is just overwhelming
Not to mention the virus, hacker crap

Then again it depends on your offer - if you have crappy offers with page after page of "signups" and fake sweepstakes stuff, if you have horrible download a toolbar junk, and such then really you get what you get....decent affiliates won't touch that junk

FYI - I was an affiliate for Paypal when they first opened in late 90's LOL>>> and I joined Commission Junction when it was a little choo choo train interface, it was one of the first affiliate programs.

  • 1) Find Trusted Partners! (And re-purchase traffic from trusted partners)

    2) Use (middle-men) services like Clickonomy, SoloAdMarketplace, etc to buy, so that you can claim a refund, if you can prove that it's fraud traffic.

    3) Have proof, so you can show these services, and get refunds
