godaddy... problem downloading large files?

I am about to release my first video+ebook product. It's a 105 MB zip file that I stored on my godaddy account (WordPress Deluxe Hosting).

When the customer finishes the purchase, he/she can initiate the download - I use DLguard for this.

Problem: I tested it two times now and the download terminates after ~25%. The result is a corrupted zip archive that is just 26 MB in size.

I don't think my customers will like that.

Are there known problems with godaddy + large files?
Where should I store my product files?

  • I never used goddady's hosting packages before but this download issue you have should not happen in any hosting provider. If it is indeed godaddy's issue, it is totally unacceptable. The video ebook is quite large and will eat up a lot of bandwidth but it should not stop you from downloading. You should probably contact the tech support.

    Last resort: Why not try other hosting providers like arvixe or hostgator? In my opinion, they are more well known in the IM world.

    • I wonder if it's a DLguard issue.

      Tried downloading the file for six times now.
      Three times via the direct link to the file --> works fine.
      Three times via the download link from DLguard --> download terminates after 25-30%.

      I also initiated both downloads at the same time and the result is the same. Direct link to the zip file works fine, the DLguard link stops downloading and the result is a corrupted zip archive.

      Guess I'll need to contact support at Downloadguard...
  • The only issue I have with Go Daddy is load speeds with multiple domains.
  • There are more issues that that at GoDaddy. They have their own way of doing things and that is how they keep you locked in. Some scripts won't work and a lot of other stuff you take for granted. I buy all my domains there but left the hosting after one week when I first started. That was years ago so maybe they have changed, but there are a ton of great host to choose from.

  • I use GoDaddy for my hosting and I build my sites using Joomla. On some of my sites I have large file download areas. For me, having people download the files has never been a problem. So I don't beleive it's a GoDaddy issue.

    You may want to try using ejunkie.com or digitalproductdelivery.com to deliver your products.

    • Now, I uploaded the file to amazons s3 service and set the product URL to the S3 file.

      Still, the download through DLguard (on godaddy) terminates after ~20 MB.

      I am sure there is a simple solution for this. I can't possibly be the only one who uses Downloadguard in combination with godaddy...

  • It must be a limitation on Godaddy's PHP configuration. Something like memory use limits.

    • Hmm.. I don't know much about PHP, but phpinfo tells me that there is a setting "memory_limit" = 32M

      Is that the problem? If so, how can I change the setting?
  • Go Daddy, I never used services of go daddy. I think hostgater or I power is the best who gives fastest hosting services

  • I am having the same problem. Downloading 143mb file from godaddy using DLGuard. When I download the file directly for server it downloads fine. With DLGuard it only downloads partially. Did you ever resolve the problem?
  • Hi guys,

    I've seen this happen before with larger files with GoDaddy hosting.

    There is a huge difference between a standard raw donwload link, and a secured download link, and the methods used to download.

    A raw download link is just that - your browser reads a file from the server, saving the file contents onto your computer.

    When you use a security product such as DLGuard, to keep the real file location hidden, instead of setting up a direct link between the browser and the file (which will show the file location, and therefore become a security hole), DLGuard will read the file contents from your website, and pass it to the browser.

    This means a script running on your website is reading the file contents, and passing it through.

    This allows the real file location to be completely hidden.

    It also means that some webhosts can get a little edgy, as they see a file being run (ie. the download script), think it's taking too long, and kill the process.

    This is what GoDaddy seems to be doing - closing the download process, probably because it thinks its "hung".

    There are a couple of options:

    1) Move your site to someone like HostGator. Or if you prefer, start a second site on Hostgator, and run DLGuard from there, but keep your main sales pages on GoDaddy.

    OR

    2) Split your download file up into 50mb blocks. This can be done using Winzip, and then you can display all of the donwload files on the same page using the Multiple Files method as described here:

    Hopefully 50mb would be small enough for the GoDaddy server to allow it run.



    To give you an idea, a lot of DLGuard customers are selling files that are hundreds of mb's in file size without a problem. I even had one client selling a 1.6GB file, though that was a little finicky. He split it into 500mb lots, and that seems to be working fine.

    It really comes down to the hosting provider, and if they can handle it. DLGuard will do it's job, it just depends if the host will allow it to.

    A quick note, no the memory limit shouldn't affect your download, especially if you're using the "Large File Support" as set on DLGuard's Config page. The buffer is cleaned out constantly, as the download is underway.
