So I'm look for a picture of Matt Damon to use on my blog. The problem is I can't find any free ones that aren't copy written. All the free-image websites I use don't have pics of celebrities either.

So could I play a trailer on Youtube that Matt Damon was in and then take a screenshot of the video when Matt Damon's on screen, and use that as a photo?

  • Technically, if they wanted to, the movie production studio could go after you. Even if the clip is on YouTube.

The movie industry is every bit as horrible as the record industry in being a bunch of rabid attack dogs when it comes to someone using anything they create without permission (read: paying them).

HOWEVER, there is "fair use" so if you are talking about Matt Damon and about the movie he is in AND you give credit for where you got the picture from then you SHOULD be fine. Movie review sites do what you're talking about all the time.

Understand that I'm not a lawyer and you may want to spend $50 and talk to one about this this. It'll be a short conversation and it's $50 very well spent I promise you.

On Flickr, supposedly under creative commons license (required attribution).

I haven't looked at the license, but you could and should investigate first.

One trick for getting celebrity, cartoon, comic and Disney images is to sign up as an affiliate for allposters.com

Then use embedded posters for your pictures linked to the poster/image on All Posters with an affiliate link.

Posters are not suitable for all images but it is a good way to get some trademarked images along with another source of affiliate revenue.

Here is a picture of Matt Damon at All Posters

Edit: I am in Canada so allposters.com redirects to allposters.ca which is the same.

Doesn't Getty have an image stream that you can access in return for attribution? I have not looked at it, but I seem to recall an email from them about it. Just a thought.

Here's a longshot but a royalty-free answer to your question. Hang around Hollywood, and when you see Matt Damon ask him politely if you can have a selfie with him.

You can use Flickr's Attribution License pictures to use a photo of a celebrity freely as long as you credit the original source.

Deviantart is also a great way to obtain free pictures for your blog, but to do this you must first creat a deviantart account, give credit and a link back to the picture, and let the artist know that you are using their picture, and your free to post these free images on your site.
