I question whether "learn SEO" would be considered a "great tip".

It's great if you are an expert but can be incredibly frustrating while learning.

A few problems are:

1) It can take a long time for Google to bump you around in the rankings before your SEO efforts are rewarded with stable SERPs.

2) Getting traffic is not enough. Targeted traffic is the key. Key differences between targeting "buyer keywords" and "information seeking keywords" are subtleties many struggle with even if they know how to implement SEO techniques. You really need to be an expert on keywords and keyword research before you can effectively tackle SEO. Good keyword research is the first step in good SEO.

3) You are at the mercy of Google. What works today may not work tomorrow, Even with 'white hat' techniques, there is no guarantee you won't be hammered by an algorithm update.

SEO is important and SEO works but SEO can be a tough haul for newbies starting out.

If someone approached me "as an expert in Internet marketing" and asked "how do I get more traffic?" my answer would not be "learn SEO".

For example, YouTube (as your sig suggests) brings more traffic and more targeted traffic than SEO for the average marketer. Barring SEO experts, of course.

Yeah, traffic's important. Here's a real advice for beginners: 1) create a useful product, 2) find where its potential users hang out, 3) sell it to them.

I don't feel Seo is the best way to go to survive. I would try using other methods such as using social networks, learning media traffic and list building. Through list building you can recommend subscribers to check out your website and still communicate with them. Also I would create ebooks or courses to get traffic as well by offering buyers to visit your site for more info. Seo can be a bonus but I wouldn't have it as my main source.

You're saying something that is being told 5 times a day in this forum. We all know the benefits of SEO. Learning SEO is not so easy. Achieving results, even if you "know it" is even harder. Don't underestimate the task.

If you've had success with SEO, it depends on many factors. Ranking for low-competition keywords doesn't make you an SEO guru. It just makes you better than the others in the same niche, not better than everyone else.

This is why keyword and niche competition is important. It precedes SEO. Without it, your SEO campaign is like a black box - you put a lot of effort in it, but you don't know what's going to come out...

This is not really something new. It's probably good to know that SEO techniques are changing every year, so try to focus on learning new SEO skills.

I used to be heavy into SEO, and was becoming quite good at it too, back in 2011.

Then the Penguin update came along and basically wiped me out almost overnight.

I don`t like being at the mercy of GoOGle and its algorithm updates. There are more reliable ways to get traffic, some of them even older than the internet (but still work).

This is a classic link dropping thread. OP comes in with very generic advice and, though not incorrect, not very helpful either. Then he disappears after dropping the link and does not return to the discussion despite some good comments about traffic and SEO.

Notice a mod has removed the signature which was an affiliate link (not allowed).

The mods should have just deleted the entire thread instead of his sig.
