Best place for a .NYC domain

Hey everyone,

I've been looking around and found a gold chest of information here because of the forum and many of topics I adverted a few costly mistakes. With that being said I didn't see any real information on what I was looking for.

I want to have a .nyc domain. I know it's not the best move but for branding and to emphasis on being mostly offline and local it works (also the .com isn;t available ) out.

I tried 1&1 hosting along with the domain and it was a great package however their customer service is the absolute worst. I mean they screwed up my account and didn't care about it. Apparently I'm supposed to call every department involved in the situation to let them know it was an error.

Godaddy I feel is overpriced and doesn't give whois privacy without paying for it. I saw a few others just as costly.

I'm thinking I just have to make an order for the $35 per year and take the salt with it.

I'm still looking into hosting providers, Theres tons of recommendations and I'm still reading a good few threads. I think I should be able to get a hosting package from all the info out here. I was pretty close to choosing Hostgator until I read some other threads explaing how unreliable their servers are, but in the meantime I wanted to ask if any warriors had any recommendations for a nyc domain

I wouldn't buy a .nyc domain unless you had a local business in – you guessed it – New York. Otherwise, it will just confuse people and you don't want that.

I always try to buy .coms if possible and if you're absolutely set on a name that isn't available in .com, I'd try a .net.

If either of those are unavailable, I'd think of another name. But really, .com if you can help it.

I use HostGator and I love them. Their support is a tad slow (around 30 minutes for a live chat), but their dashboard is the best. Very user friendly and easy to navigate. Plus their prices are great.

I usually buy a .99 cent domain on GoDaddy or 1and1 (just use them for cheap domains – I'd never buy hosting there) and then just transfer the nameservers to HostGator.

If you are looking to buy a domain you can always go with Namecheap. They have a 1year free who is guard. They do not up sell you at all. They all so have hosting. But I do not recommend using them both at the same time.

I recommend Veerotech currently having all but one site there. Once the bluehost renewal is about ready the site will be moved. You can find coupons for both companies.

If you just want domains I would always and forever tell you to go namecheap. Do not host with them it is just for domains. Never go to Godaddy I have had problems there with domains being stolen and sold at a higher price and heard many a horror stories about them just yanking domains for false reports. Not to mention they where backers on sopa.

Namecheap has and always will be the number one source for domains. I have used them for many a years never once had a single problem with them.

I wouldv'e never knew godaddy are in support of sopa. Thanks for that info. To a casual vpn in a vpn user thats a no go. Ill give namecheap a try.

I'm local to NY and its more of an offline initiative until I can get the .com which doesn't seem to be given up that easily.

Thank you everyone for your input

Boycott GoDaddy you can read about it there. They have long been against of freedom of internet while namecheap is on the forefront of the fight FOR internet freedom. Godaddy later dropped there support of Sopa due to public outcry however just supporting it in the first place shows where they stand on the issue as a company.

If you buy a lot of domains, you might want to consider joining the GoDaddy Discount Club which will be a $9.99 monthly fee instead of one lump annual fee soon. I'm part of the Discount Club and for me a .nyc domain is $23.99 for the first year. You can also search the net for GoDaddy discount codes which may work. As for other registrars, I also use Name.com and their annual Whois privacy is only $3.99 per domain.

+1 for Namecheap. They are much cheaper than GoDaddy for .nyc domains too.
