Hey Guys and Gals.

If you don't mind sharing.

How did you get into internet marketing?
What lead you to this path?

For me.

I am from Gary, Indiana. Yes, it's the home town of Michael Jackson lol.
Not the greatest area in the world. But there are some descent people who are just like us all. Looking to make a good life for themselves.
It saddens me to see some kids still wanting the quick and easy money which leads them to a life on the streets. Sure, they are making good money. But 1. it's not legal. 2. It's DANGEROUS!!!

Anyhow.

When my brother and I were young. My dad saw something in computers and technology in general. It's funny that my mom saw no value in them. She got on my dad's case whenever he had us around them. She called them idiot boxes lol. I guess my mom thought they were time wasters. She would rather us read books instead.

As time went on. My dad's only hope was to at least have my brother and I be descent with computers. Well, we ended up falling in love with them. So we ran with it.

I ended getting a bachelor's at Purdue University in Computer Information Systems Technology. So did my brother. He actually just got a masters in business. We are extremely close. He is my best friend. I am proud of him for sticking with the masters program while being married with a young child.

For the last 15 years. I have been working as a software engineer / architect for various companies. Some of them large. Some of them small. I really enjoy the work. I moved to Chicago a few years ago for better work opportunities.
Landed a pretty cool gig that I do full time now. I always wanted to work in the health related field. I get satisfaction in designing software systems that helps doctors make better decisions with their patients. It's cool to also work with good people.

But when I sit back and think about what lead me here to marketing.
I think it's a combination of 3 things.

1. My dad. He is a retired electrician who loves electronics. He loves to take things apart and reverse engineer them. This rubbed off on me. I love taking internet campaigns and try to reverse engineer them. To see what makes them tic.

2. My mom: She is a retired special education teacher. One of her hidden talents is actually art and drawing. Anything creative is what she loved.
This also rubbed off on me. I love to create and inspire with creativity.
It's just fun to me.

3. The Challenge: I personally feel that we all need to find something that will

1. Actually be hard for us to achieve to some degree.
2. Help us improve ourselves.
3. Allow us to help improve someone else's life.

Internet Marketing is perfect for this. Especially since the internet is global. We all have the chance to do this on a global level.

All in all. I am in the process of creating a product and training videos myself.
I think it's important to pass down the information that I have learned to others. I am hoping that one day I can get more kids off the street. And point them to internet marketing. Point them to meet more people like you guys on this forum. I don't really care too much about the money. Sure, I will take extra cash lol . But I have been blessed to have a descent middle class job that I love. I just need something else that I can apply my creative and business passions to. This is perfect for that.

I know this was long.

But what is your story?

Mark

    That's an awesome story Mark!

Short story of an otherwise really long one...

I read the 4 hour work week, couldnt think of a muse so I went back to what I knew already which was selling online...eventually wanted to get more customers and other channels to work with...led me to PPC and SEO. That's when the internet marketing passion came and kicked things off with affiliate marketing.

I was in sales all my life. Even as a little kid. I think I started selling odd jobs. I tired of making others rich. The last straw was at a time share company. I would sell people a vacation for an obvious too good to be true price. I made 1k per sale and could make one or two sales a day. While the owner (a very well known UFC fighter) would average about 10k for everyone I sold. I was like who the heck is winning here? He is making out like a fat rat while I am eating table scraps.

I ended up buying a site on ebay. I BARELY knew how to use the internet or a computer but thanks to the manager he got me started by opening me up to the wonderful world of gaming. That helped to teach me a lot about the internet.

Long story short the listing PROMISED I would make money on autopilot. LOL. Yeah we know how that goes. So I got tired of waiting of it to make sales on it's own and learned how to advertise. (thanks google) I hit 100.00 a day and have not looked back since.

Now yeah most people would look and say wait you left a GREAT paying job for less? Nope I left a job being a slave and unappreciated to become a BOSS. I told myself what to do. I made my own money. I was truly independent and to me that was worth more than any income.

Started out as a comic blogger (A noobish one basically just using ms paint creating shapes and putting dialogue.)

Got my first adsense check... And I was like WHAT!!!

Then got an offer from a friend, who is running his own small printing business and needed some help with SEO and Adwords (He posted this on Facebook) I grabbed that chance, knowing how easy SEO was at that time. (Merely backlinks and you're first page.)

Well... from that 1 friend... he recommended me to another friend... and it goes on.. and on... Ended up doing web design with SEO.

Still learning... Trying to get to that sweet spot in automation of affiliate marketing.

That's a great story. I started as a hobby to see if it were even possible. Then, I found out about the idea of it being able to generate residual income, which I really liked. I used to watch those "The Fabulous Life of..." and realized that one of the reasons the average person is poor is because we exchange hours for money whereas celebrities not only make bigger salaries, but generate passive income (and have multiple jobs). The internet provides the same thing but in a different way.

      My story is simple.

I got laid off several years ago during the great recession. Job hunting was tough and traditional jobs were scarce. I fell into the free money making niche and I've been with it ever since.

Same as View Profile: dana67, I got laid off, tried to find my way around a bit, and decided I want to be my own boss. Was surfing one time when I chanced upon one very interesting blog about Internet Marketing. Read about it, and read more about it, until I got convinced that it was the best option for me. I stuck with IM ever since and now a happy 5K/month earner via different funnels!.

I started as a blogger and I am still blogging. I created my first blog using Yola.com. I was 16 and had no idea what I was doing. I was just trying to be a cool kid. After a year or so, I started pcpedia.blogspot and from there I moved to self hosted wordpress (It was a long journey)

The only reason that lead me to Internet marketing is money. I knew hosting affiliates paid good money. I referred 3 people to Hostgator. I was excited about the commission but they declined all the 3 referrals. Even though I was disappointed, I knew that I could earn money promoting affiliate programs. I tried and tested many affiliate programs until I settled for the one that worked for me. Recently with a new hosting affiliate program I generated approx $1500 in 8 days although all the sales are not yet approved, it takes around 90 days.

I am trying to build a passive income source and nothing beats an affiliate. I hope one day, I would generate around $5000 - $6000 dollars a month without doing anything. That's my goal. I like to set realistic targets so that I can try and achieve them.

But to be honest after reading both the Rich Jerk and Success Manual neither had as much an impact as this very forum did on me many years ago.

    Hey Mark,

For me it was and has always been the entrepreneur bug. I remember reading where a guy acquired the rights to a toy he saw overseas and called it the wacky wall crawler and it was a freebie premium inside kids cereal boxes. He made millions!

So the thought of creating something from seeing an opportunity that others may not be so quick to see has always appealed to me.

When you have that running in your blood and inside your head its very hard to be a clock watcher trading hours for dollars. But people have to eat and people have responsibilities so I understand why many people do what they really do not love sometimes.

But the internet offers so much access and opportunity and reach I can not even imagine a kid growing up these days with so much power if they chose to view it that way.

We could have a big debate on the advantages of a 4 year college and becoming a full time internet marketer but at least even if you get scammed a few times online it will never equal the debt some people are weighed down with after college!

But hey these days you can have a person in college still crushing it online.

So yes there are some drama filled days online but all in all its just too powerful and potentially life transforming to ignore.

Sounds like you had an awesome upbringing. Very smart parents for different reasons.

Your father saw the value and potential in the future of computers and your mother saw the value and the potential that can be realized if you read books.

I got started online back in January of 2005 after seeing a BS commercial of some actor turning around from his desktop to look at the camera and say "I just made $30,000 this month working from home on my computer."

I wasn't so sure I believed him, but I believed "it."

I'll spare all the details that came after, but thats how it all began for me.

Back in 2003 my nephew disappeared just before Christmas. In March 2004 his body was discovered in a nearby garbage dump in Ontario, Canada.

This has nothing to do with IM and neither did I but it did change the course of my life. It lead to me asking many questions and looking at life very differently than I used to.

Sometimes in life, it can take a tragedy before we end up making a 'paradigm' shift. It was a very sad time indeed and really made me look at the whole world 'differently'.

I actually drove a truck (18 wheeler) and started to get very burn't out.

Here is an old banner that I used with my story for leads back then after coming online:

Before that burn out, I would have never looked at something 'outside' a traditional job or business. I guess I was a very skeptical person.

With the death of my nephew (and the way he was discovered) caused me to get really shook up.

These circumstances kind of 'opened' my mind to different possibilities.

I remembered walking down my drive way around 4 am going to my car and asking God for a way out. One thing led to another and before you know it...

My mom handed my a book called "Think and Grow Rich" while we were visiting her for Thanks Giving in 2005.

Eventually I was open enough to actually try an MLM type business. This thing was called Travel Cash and now (looking back) seemed to be some really kind of schemey pyramid. And I think it is still in existence today believe it or not.

I made some money in TC but not very much. It was the kind of thing where they tell you that you have to get 2 people and they get two people and so on.

What they don't tell you is that you have to 'keep' recruiting to make money because most of the people that you enroll won't do a damn thing except sit back to 'see' what happens.

Any way later in 2005, I started looking online and found this guy site, saw this guys lifestyle, vacations and family. I joined him and it cost me $1,500 & I eventually crashed and burned within 3 months.

    Here is that guy (Craig):

And the only reason that I crashed and burned so fast was because I expected way too much too fast and wasn't really putting in enough time doing the right things.

Eventually I made my first $50 (net) online in 2006.

Then made my second sale of $1,000 (net) in 2007.

And here I am today 'still' online. Yeahhh!!

Here is another post on: how I made my first two sales online

I always wanted to travel the world and live life on my own terms.

Internet Marketing is the only or at least one of the few businesses that allow to to have 100% location, time and financial freedom.

It's been a hell of a ride but definitely worth it.

    Why Business?

Because, I am a born leader and was not able to digest that another human being who I felt is not competent enough to judge my performance at work... and I was also sure that I can not make myself financially secure in a corporate job.

Financial freedom can only be found with creating value for large amount of people in the world and here now...Full time internet marketer...making my living online from last one year...after having 14 years of corporate job... Living on my own terms...!

I started out in 2004 as an eBay seller and made it to Gold Powerseller by March of that same year, this motivated me to stick with this "online" thing.

I made good money for several years but came out in 2008 demotivated by all the new eBay rules and declining sales..

In 2010 I returned to online marketing, this time as a rookie Internet Marketer, got absolutely nowhere until early 2012 (too much chasing shiny objects..

Then it all finally made sense in October of 2012, I joined a Network Marketing company and I've been with them ever since. This is my full time income now and I love working from home. Stickability goes a long way in this game.

I have been obsessed with creating businesses since I was kid. I never played being a firefighter, police officer or astronaut.

    My three things were:

    1. Become a fiction writer
    2. Become an entrepreneur
    3. Travel around a lot

    :-)

I do pretty much all 3 of those now. Childhood dreams do come true when you listen to all those positive infomercials growing up about make money systems - you eventually get it in your head that nothing can stop yah.

    Then....

Well you go do it haha.

The amount you make compared to the work put in is not worth it.

There are definitely bigger and better fish to fry, no doubt.

It helped me in that it showed me money could be made online.

But honestly it is not really worth the time

I started Internet Marketing because of the freedom it could offer me. Now I work just a few hours per day still earning FULL income. It's amazing, trust me.

The Internet is the second best thing that ever happened to me!

      Yes, financial freedom

The idea of 'Make money while you sleep' is very compelling for me

Great question for all and thanks for sharing your story. For me it was because I had an existing personal consulting business for years. When I seen how effective internet marketing was, my main focus was to learn everything about it and be the forerunner for my clients.
They were stuck in jobs, some were unemployed, others wanted a venue to start their own business. So I started my online world really for those who needed more freedom, or compensation, and most importantly for those who wanted to start their own business.
Guess I can say my main motivation was for others, rather than myself.

  • I started with a simple blog...

I just wanted to express my lessons, learnings, observations and experiences with the word.

Then, I realised the income and freedom possibilities of internet marketing (Done right)

And I tested it, was persistent, and got more and more results that I wanted

    Very nice story, Mark!

I started IM because since I was a child I've always wanted to travel the world and go windsurfing wherever I want and whenever I want, without being dependant on a job. I always knew that I was going to achieve it and during the first years in college I found that IM is the best way to do it. My business has been steadily growing ever since, I've been able to live the lifestyle the I always wanted and can't be happier!

Well, my story started about three years ago when an instructor for Real Social Dynamics quit his job and become an IMer himself and started selling an online traning course that he produced.

I subscribed to his email list and learnt some basics of that, but not enough, but it was this that motivated me to start.

I started a blog, which didn't work out, I then tried on or two other websites with out success.

I am now writing another blog and currently wrting a book to go along with it.

I am making no money with this at the moment, but will.

Its really funny when i remember how i started this Internet marketing thing.
Sure enough, it wasn't for the money.
A friend of mine owned a wordpress those days and he was the only site owner i knew. I really wanted to be like him. He helped me setup my blog, introducing me to wordpress.
At that time, I blogged about anything that came to mind, it was such a mess having music, health, culture, fashion etc on the same site. I even published my mates' assignments and projects.
I was introduced to adsense, i signed up and my crazy first site made my first few $$$. It was quite exciting to see money being made following something i enjoyed doing. I built other sites for different causes back then and just placed my adsense links in them.
It was much later after more descent training that i learned about SEO, Traffic, Affiliate Marketing, List building etc
I really love Internet marketing and how easy it is to make some good cash if you know exactly what you are doing

My dislike for my old boss is what led me to want to be my own. I hated having to work late, start work early, and lose time with my friends and family, so i started doing some research and took action.

For me, I had a friend who always had the latest and greatest gadgets and always had the biggest and best of everything. We were about 20-25 at the time (if memory serves me right), so I was confused on how he always had the money for everything.

I bugged and bugged him and initially he wouldn't tell me, it took me months of bugging for him to finally give in. He pretty much told me a few forums to look at and Google adwords, adon network and media traffic and that's all he would tell me.

Eventually I figured out about the idea of affiliate networks and started applying and got accepted to a few of the big networks. I started spending money on Google , adon, and media traffic. Keep in mind that back then Google was easier to work with and the quality of traffic at mediatraffic and adon was much better than now a days.

And it all kind of snow balled from there

    The short story: Robert Plank.

The not so short story: While I was on vacations I had an accident that didn't allow me to walk for a while. Being concerned if I was ever going to walk again, I started browsing for how to make money online and then I found out about Robert Plank, who was a PHP programmer and was making a killing with Internet Marketing.

I knew there was money being made with banners and AdSense on the Internet but it never really got my attention until that point.

I started trying to make money for a few months and after making a few dollars on my PayPal account I never looked back.

PS. The long story involves getting married afterwards, becoming lazy and having to get back to have a full time job, becoming miserable and now currently planning my escape (forever) out of my 8 to 7 job.
