Good morning all

I logged into a blog based site that I created for my children. When I logged into it, I found that I had several spam posts pending (I allow users to submit, but I must approve). Made me wonder, is spamming blogs really that profitable?

I'm not suggesting that anyone should spam. I'm not asking if it is profitable compared to something else. I'm not devoting any time to it beyond this post. Just curious. Is there really enough money to be made by spamming to make it worth it? If it is approved, do people really read that stuff and click?

I'll take my comments off the air.

I used to think spamming was free and done by bots, can't comment on the effectivenes of the method though.

    Use captcha

Spamming and success will never go together. People who do it will eventually realize it's not profitable.

If you have a Wordpress blog and want to get rid of all those annoying pending comments then, install a plugin called "Delete Pending Comments" by Nicolas Kuttler.

This is a great tool and wipes away all of those bot spam comments in a flash.

I'm sure there are ways to have bots do it. I would think it would be more effective to do it manually, but maybe those things convert more than I realize.

I have captcha. This wasn't comment spam. I allow front-end posts that I must approve before they are published. I had about 8 submissions last night, which by the topic, appear to be the same person. First time I have had spam submissions, although I am certain that they will not be the last.

I don't think spamming works. As I get so many spammy comments generated by bots. I never bother to approve them. I use a plugin called "WP-Optimize" Its optimizes database, post revisions, comments in just one click.

Antonio, why do you say it works? The comments or posts will be only published by the admin if they are approved. Most bloggers clear spam comments without even looking at it.

Years ago, I sold a pay per install guide using this method, and it worked. It also worked when a resold a DVD called "Crazy Crowd Surfers" that I found out people liked.
While I install Askimet's free WP plugin and moderate comments, I gotta admit, I never understood "WHY" someone bothered. In some cases, I thought maybe the typical SEO spammer might do alright, as many of them promise "Traffic" to new blog owners, but aside that, would've never imagined they made money.

Thanks, that was interesting to know.

up to 1% conversion? That seems a little crazy! Even at .05% I have to say that I am a little surprised. If the numbers are that high and it is automated for the most part, I can see why people do it. To sit there and manually comment on 1000 blogs doesn't quite seem like it would be worth the effort.

I personally know several people who have made a killing from spamming (not from blog comments, though). I guess it all depends on where your ethical scale slides.
