How would YOU monetize a domain mentioned on national TV?

Hey Warriors,

I spent a day or so building a video WSO case study centered around an unclaimed domain name mentioned on live national TV which I was quick enough to snatch up before anyone else. Long story short, The WSO was disproved twice due to "make money online" rule something or another which kind of ticked me off (seeing the load of BS on here sometimes.. LOL, and the fact I was QUITE clear it was a case study.. etc etc BAH)

Rather than marketing it as a WSO product I thought it would be fun to get a bit more involved again here at WF and meet the new community since it's taken new ownership.

So let's start a group mastermind!

I didn't initially want to give out the domain info here publicly due to the fact that it's a bit distasteful and crude in nature, however definitely has potential for longterm monetization, not to mention I see a huge social viability as well due to the unique set of individuals it could potentially laser target. (thinking FB target-> ALL people with name (XXXXX)

The domain name is: (VERYCOMMONNAME)isa(VERYOFFENSIVETERM).com

The domain is humorous and not exactly NSFW, but it holds a certain social shock value that would leave bad taste in my mouth if I had the name :s

Here's what I've done so far:

1) I've purchased the domain name, hosted it and set up some basic analytics tracking
2) I setup a quick, clever little lead capture form- Nothing high quality but better than nothing
3) It's gotten a surge of traffic already, but has been dying slowly which i think we can re-jumpstart easily
4) It's also gotten a load of email captures and comments left by visitors, as well as some social refs
5) Created a WSO video sales copy (which is irrelevant at this point I suppose but could be useful)
6) Created a few backend videos explaining the entire project and some on screen setup action (unedited)

It's also got potential for additional media coverage, as it was mentioned initially as a viewer challenge on Comedy Central- Again I don't want to post the domain here publicly and have it crawled before I'm able to have it optimized for monetization so I'm going to hold off on that detail FOR NOW. (Please dont post the domain if you think you know what I'm talking about )

Since this is a time sensitive project lets start an open discussion, if you're interested in participating in this project or following along as several of us do, chime in here or shoot me a PM.

I think this kind of method is more a short term quick buck and move on method. Of course, this depends on the niche/domain/marketing plan. And I don't know the domain you are talking about.

You are going to get a brief uptick in traffic because it was mentioned on TV. But if the domain is not viable on its own (i.e. it would be valuable even without TV exposure) then the interest will be short lived.

If you want to make it a longer term project, you need to see the value beyond the trending hype.

There are many domains like this that get mentioned on T.V. Often movies and TV shows mention "fake" but legit sounding domain names.

Most have similar potential to the domain you are discussing.

It is also against Facebook ToS to target ads by a person's name. They cracked down on this when people started targeting T-shirts at particular "names".

    A few questions:

What do you say in your autoresponder series for sign-ups?
What kind of relationship do you build and how do you market to them?
What is the long-term monetization strategy?
    What do you sell?
    How are conversions?

Do you monetize directly or simply use this site for traffic that is passed on to a monetized site?

It sounds interesting but lots of gaps....

Hey Subie, as I mentioned there was a larger motivation to monetize this domain due to the fact it was referenced during a viewer challenge and I saw an opportunity for my 5 minutes of fame on CC.

This isn't by ANY MEANS something's I'd choose to monetize based strictly on initiating type in traffic, nor is it a niche I'd expect anyone to be familiar with either LOL! (If you are.. I dont want to know you.. ha)

That being said, there's definitely no AR setup or any of the above in place, it was something I was planning to do as part of a WSO case study but as I mentioned in the OP; decided to open up for discussion for free

Interesting point you made however on FB; I wasn't aware of that recent change. It was initially the Teespring campaigns I saw everywhere that gave me the idea to begin with. So I'm glad you brought that up!

So let me get this straight...

    1. You created a case study WSO about how to make money with a domain name you snatched up.
    2. The WSO was not approved.
    3. You are now asking for input on how to make money with this domain name.

Sounds to me like someone made the right call not to approve your WSO.

        Grayson,

Do you really want to be associated with a web site on a domain that carries "a very offensive term?"

I don't know what that term is, but I wonder if it's smart to even start down this road. If what you say is correct, there will be a certain segment of the population that you will undoubtedly offend. There is also a good chance your domain will be banned by some hosts.

I understand you may say that you don't care and that you're not trying to appeal to everyone . . . however . . . it seems to me that it is important for people who make a career of Internet marketing to not be associated with negative comments, bans, reports of being offensive, being on black lists, receiving negative reviews, etc.

I question also the lasting impact of having your domain mentioned on national TV. So what? There may have been a curiosity bump of traffic to the web site, but who is going to remember a one-time TV reference anyway? Probably no one.

I think you're looking for positives from the TV reference where there really are none. Selling online typically revolves around stepping in front of market demand and frankly, I really wonder if there is any for what you're proposing to do. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong, of course.
