What's a Domain Worth?

I know a domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it? And I know how to easily find alternative domains.

But....

When evaluating a domain for sale that I really like, but don't want to pay the seller's asking price, what are some good tips?

How can you get notified if the domain is not renewed?

How can you estimate the keyword search volume value and adsense value?

    1. When negotiating the sale, the first person to mention a price loses.
    2. Ask to see verified earning from the domain (if sales are low or non-existent, you have ammunition to make the case for a low sales price.
    3. Ask to see verified monthly traffic to the domain. The lower the traffic, the lower the valuation.
    4. Be prepared with your own numbers so as not to be fooled if the owner gives you fake numbers or doctored screen shots.
    5. Be prepared to show other similar domains that could be registered today in case the owner insists that there is nothing like his domain still available.

Most domain registrars have "alert" systems in place that you can buy for a small fee. There are also registrars that offer "Backordering" services that supposedly (I haven't tried them) scoop up dropped domains as soon as they are released to the public.

It's very simple and there are tons of keyword search services, apps and software that will do the trick for you. You can also do search volume research on your own with free tools. Just Google "find keyword search volume" or search this forum for threads on the subject (there have been many of them over the years.)

    The very best to you,

The most I would pay for a domain is $1,500 after that I am sure I can find something with a little creativity and pau $10.

Unless, of course, the domain is worth a lot more than $1500.

Except for type-in traffic a domain itself has no value. What can be done with a website on the domain, though, can be tremendous and a "valuation" based on a keyword and Adsense clicks would probably undervalue the opportunity.

Unless the opportunity is an EMD domain, ranking for that one keyword then using the Google planner to get searches per month, value per click, and then discounting based on estimated traffic, CTR, and 60% of the planner's Adwords value that is paid out in Adsense.

I understand keyword search volume. But I'm wondering about keyword search volume value.

Is there a way to measure the value of the search volume, say in adsense value, that is pretty objective?

For example, I found a domain which I think has low value to the obvious 'keyword search term' perspective; but, I thought of a way to potentially monetize it I want to try which is a bit unique and probably only something an IM guy would consider. So I want the domain, but don't want to reveal to the seller it's true potential, and want to use 'adsense' or some other metric to provide some numbers of it's apparent worthlessness. Ideas or suggestions?

      Jeff,

IMO, the problem with determining "value" is that it is a subjective variable. To some, value strictly means how much money it's worth. To someone else, a domain name could have value in it's brand recognition. Or a domain could have value because it's short . . . or aged . . . or sought after highly.

We all tend to fall in love with our own domain names. So it would seem to me, in this case, you want to make the case to the owner that the value is only seen in his eyes . . . no one else is going to see the value he sees, and as a result, he is not going to be able to sell the domain for what he wants.
