I bought a cool domain. Now what?

I bought Retreat.io and want to build a business around it. I think its a great domain! All one word. Granted its a .io but that seems to be pretty popular in silicon valley. Obviously, I wish it was a .com.

Now that I have a cool domain...I wonder what business ideas would go well for it. A couple Ideas I have are...

- Retreat Review Site
- Retreat Aggregation Site
- Retreats for corporate teams
- Retreats for entrepreneurs

What are your ideas?

p.s. Are there SEO advantages with .com vs .io?

Step 1. Build a traveling/ travel/ tour app and build a business around it. Website to match it.

Step 2. Think outside the box and do something noone else is doing...then stick with that business plan.

    Step 3. Profit

I'm sorry to give you the bad news . . . you've got this all backward.

When you start a business, everything begins with market research to determine where there is demand in the marketplace.

Then as an entrepreneur, you find a solution to that demand and sell it to hungry buyers in the niche.

Building a business around a domain name is not the best way to do it as you end up just as you are . . . trying to figure out what business goes best with that domain. Often, there is no demand that you can fill competitively.

Yes, certainly, it has every advantage over .io! If you plan to sell anything online, dot com is always the preferred extension. Dot com is for commercial businesses and it is worth more than any other domain extension, all other things being equal.

There are wonderful dot com names in every niche just waiting to be registered.

If people are looking for a retreat - related site, they are going to go to retreat.com almost always.

But if they are clicking a link they don't care (or likely even notice) that it is a .io site.

Yes .com have a higher domain ranking in the eyes of Google. Before you decide to start and business
on your domain you should have done some keyword research to see if the niches you mentioned above
have a good amount of searches in Google and see how competitive the niche is.

      Wrong. Google doesn't care.

And no need to to extensive research to know that travel is a huge market with a lot of demand.

You mention how popular .io is in silicon valley but think about that....its the world wide web...who are your customers/clients?

The first thing I would be thinking is who will be paying me and why would they and how can I get them to gladly pay me again after that

I think everyone is giving me a school lesson on business 101. Which I appreciate your time to do that. However, that does not answer the question.

I happen to be in a situation where I have a short domain which I like www.Retreat.io and I would like business ideas to build on top of that.

Disclaimer...I know this is ass backwards about how someone would normally build a business by finding a problem/need and building a solution etc. But, it is what it is...

So again...what ideas would be good for this site?

  • That is a pretty cool come up. I'd make it into a traveling site with cool tips covering recipes by country, attractions, history, the beauty of their culture, fun ideas for couples, intimacy etc...and then sell ad's to big paying companies promoting cruises, hitting up expensive hotels and having them pay you to promote the most.

You can seriously come up with a thousand ideas. You can make it into a booking site/travel community thing. I'm thinking along the lines of a booking site hybrid soda head. Absolute engagement!!!

For something like this though. I would build entirely on paid and social marketing, if you can pull off SEO stuff, then it is only going to help.

What exactly did you have in mind when you bought the domain.

.com always has priority over the other domains.I mean just go to google and type in any niche you can think of and the majority of the time the first page starts with a .com site and the first page is flooded with .com sites.they are the only ones i buy now

I think you shouldn't find a "cool" domain and try to make money just because it exists. You should focus on finding a need/want or market with a pressing problem, and then offer a solution for them. But finding domain names and trying to build a business out of something that nobody's looking for isn't a good idea.

I think you should drop the domain monetization idea and approach making money online the correct way.

Yes, .com do have a prefernec in the Google ranking. However, you can still start.

But you should have thought about the audience to target before buying a domain. Anyway, since you have already started, "Retreats Review Site would show you some quick earnings.

  • .com domains usually rank better in search engines.

    It's up to you...
The choices you are making are all in the same niche, I say you just follow what works and model others in you niche
