Has Anyone Else Managed To Make A Full Time Living Online WITHOUT Mentor?

I know this might sound a dumb question but that is what I am very keen to know.

And what others might as well.

The reason why I raised that question is there has been a myth that you must have a mentor to succeed online.

Even it means investing a huge of $.

    Absolutely.

I began 21 years ago. Have never had a mentor. Have never needed a mentor.

How do you do it yourself?

    1. Research.
    2. Test.

It isn't for everyone. Some people just want to be handed a working system, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I've just never needed it.

Although I have a fairly high-paying full-time career, I make more money with my Internet business. I will never give up my job because of the excellent benefits and pension plan.

I have never used a mentor.

However, I believe I would have been successful much quicker if I would've invested money on a coach/mentor at the time. I simply didn't have the money.

I'm certain that coaching can be effective because I've already coached a few friends (for free) and two of them are making a significant amount of money while some of them have made a few bucks here and there, then quit!

Success on the Internet depends on the desire to succeed and total commitment.

I don't believe you don't absolutely need a coach or mentor to succeed but if you do and you pick the right one, it can make all the difference in the world.

And you need a right mindset as well.

You see, most people ONLY think about how to make money online when they got started.

Whereas the question they SHOULD be asking is:

Based on what I am good at and passionate about, how can I help others that will make them buy from me and even make recommendations again and again?

I used to ask that common question when I got started.

Until another member - a more experienced marketer - told me off with what I just mentioned to you in bold.

Whoever told you that is wrong. No offense. I'm not remotely passionate about many of the markets I enter. I go where I have to go to make money. You needn't be passionate about the market. You have to be passionate about - wait for it - marketing.

I agree with this! Read Anik's circle or profit recently and was cracking my head trying to list down niches I liked that could make money.

It just left me very frustrated for a few weeks trying to decide on a passionate niche I could stick with. I slowly came to the conclusion that I really like Marketing, not the bloody niches themselves.

Glad I'm not alone. Thanks Tom!

Tried a 'coach' once and that didn't go as well as expected. I felt it was more about getting my cash rather than actually being a coach.

A 'mentor' however is great for anyone to excel in whatever endeavor they choose. Emulating someone who has already succeeded in the field you're pursuing will only help you get there faster and avoid the pitfalls someone will go through without this guidance.

Just following people online who genuinely want to help others without trying to squeeze your last penny from you is my ideal person to follow and you can find these people via Twitter, their blogs, etc.

I never had one, not many available when I started. Did a lot of reading and figuring out what worked.

We did not have as much information available as there is today.

You do not need a mentor to succeed, however a good one can save you a lot of time.

I've never had a mentor and I never felt the need for one. If you do enough digging, or come across a really good course, you can find out what you need to know. Heck, just browse through some of the threads here on WF and you will get a ton of info. My advice would be to save the thousands it could cost you for a mentor and spend $97 for a War Room membership.

Trust me when I tell you there is so much awesome information in there you will never be able to digest it all in a lifetime.

I'm not saying that mentors are a bad thing. Some people have a hard time learning on their own, and that's OK. Those people may benefit from a mentor.

BTW, there are NO dumb questions. Asking questions is how you learn.

I have built up a successful YouTube channel (60k subs and counting) without a mentor or buying any courses. And now that I know how to do it, I can tell you that most of the advice being thrown around by so-called mentors or gurus is just inaccurate anyway. I learned the fundamentals by reading the official YouTube guides and then I analysed successful channels and reverse engineered the process while testing along the way. It really wasn't that complicated but people just like to believe that there's a secret to it because that's more appealing than the hard work it actually takes to achieve.

I spent a significant amount of money on mentors in the beginning and earned exactly $3 (on Adsense). There seemed to be more emphasis on the process rather than getting the student earning.

After taking a "home learning course" I was upgraded to regular webinars which was naturally more expensive. The final stage was "one on one" training and support. Cost? $5,000 which was a step too far.

Should have really seen the light when I spent an hour watching a webinar about how to recruit a VA! Anyone who decides to go the mentor route needs to ensure that the emphasis is on the basics until the money(however little) starts to flow.

Ultimately started making money by reading, watching, buying some WSO', some great, some rubbish. Ultimately learning the business and putting it all together myself.

Making money now so that, it is alleged, puts me in the top 5% of IM participants but still loads more to learn.

I managed in the beginning without a mentor out of necessity. I made a decent living after a ton of trial and error and that business had been the majority of my income up until about a year ago.

I wanted to break into other markets whilst cutting down my learning curve so I sought out a coach and it worked out pretty well. But that was only after i was already success in my original field.

You really have to be dedicated to get things going for yourself, but it happens and it works well for a lot of people, myself included.

There is no "need" here, however. That's the myth, that you NEED a mentor. This isn't like oxygen or food, you can get by without paid guidance. But some people don't have a proper vision and persistence to reach that vision, so they think a mentor is needed.

Some also seek out coaches out of habit spending a ton of money but not really getting any where. Those are the people who need to a find a job since it's clear they can't manage things on their own.

This right here is an awesome post. I'm even going to take this advice myself, because I admit I've tried to take shortcuts and bought YouTube courses myself. In the end, if you don't put in the time and hard work they won't work.

I think this advice here can be applied to just about every facet of your business.

I had a mentor in the early going and it helped lay a solid foundation, but the stuff I've been doing the last few years that's made me the most money I figured out on my own or by masterminding with other marketers in that space.

I wouldn't discount a mentor in any way. Whether you pay someone for one on one mentoring or you choose a mentor or mentors (without them knowing) and study their every move so you can emulate them, the benefits far outweigh the pitfalls.

Just choose your mentor wisely. And don't just get one just to have one. Your needs will change as you progress in your business so always look for someone who is more successful than you in your space to learn from.

I never had a mentor, although I was already a business owner at that point with a strong entrepreneur background. I didn't have a mentor for my brick and mortar business either though.

I think the key is not the knowledge itself...because I've seen hundreds of posts on this forum that very clearly explain how you can start making money online with very little upfront expense. Real entrepreneurs have the confidence and the motivation to take the chance and risk failure, and then work their way through it when they don't know what the next move is. Most of the people answering here didn't have a forum 10-15+ years ago where they could ask specific questions and sit back waiting for answers...they went out and found the answers themselves, made adjustments, and eventually found their way to success.

    Absolutely!

I quit my job back in 2010 and have been full time since, living the good life. You don't need a mentor. However, that isn't to say a mentor can't help you or even fast track you. The right one that is anyway.

This is like asking do I need a car to get from point a to point b? Nope, you could use a bike, but a car will get you there a whole lot faster! Just make sure your car isn't is used car salesman.

      Same as me, Matthew.

2010 is the year I quit my job and do IM full-time.

I first heard of this term mentor from marketing guru Michael Cheney. But I still think it boils down to your mindset even with or without a mentor.

      That is -

If you want to be successful, are you willing to do the things that will make you successful?

Or do you want to continue dreaming and watching others succeed even when you grow old and are dying?

You will figure it whether you will need one or not, but my experience has been this.
Reading books on people who you connect with who have succeeded .
Applying yourself in life and learning what works and what doesn't.
Having a go and seeing for yourself.
Constantly checking in with yourself and patting yourself on the back for moving forward and having a go.
Looking for inspiration in your life-that can be your greatest mentor.
Asking friends or strangers for their advice and then seeing what you think and feel.
And at the end of the day figuring it out for yourself.....but I will tell you that if you find a good mentor and they don't have to be expensive, once you start paying for something you will be expecting results. You value what you are wanting and that is results. So yes you may have to pay large or small and no you may not have to! You'll know what is right for you as you sift through it.....have fun with this process.....Jennifer

Well there are a few people that pay Warren Buffet 2 Million dollars to take HIM to lunch and chat.

Consultants certainly can pull in the big bucks I do not think anyone will deny that.

I did want a mentor when I started but who has the kind of bucks they are asking?

If you showed me anyone pulling in over $100,000 in any form of marketing who would not want to pick his/her brain?

I guess sometimes with the purchase of seminars, and info products we are still investing in one but without the personal added attention.

I do know of a multi million dollar marketer who has recently opened up a very reasonable private forum with personal contact access and I am looking forward to seeing some reviews on that.

Let's face it...the majority of marketers are hurting.

You know that saying....If we do what we have always done we will get what we have always got.

Yes I managed to be successful without a coach. I actually have never had a coach since I was in high school. Now I have since becoming successful had a few teachers to teach me things I wanted to branch out into. Like Email Marketing and such. However even without the coach I still would have been successful it was just a shortcut. Everything every teacher taught me is things I could have easily figured out on my own over time. However I paid for the convenience of having someone give it to me on a silver platter.

Let me tell you this and I hope it sticks in your head. YOU do not need a teacher or coach as you may call them. You can figure out everything on your own if you try hard enough. A teacher/coach is nothing more than a convenience. When you get in my shoes you ask questions like this "Do I want to spend hours researching something which would cost me thousands and thousands in productivity or should I just drop a few thousand now and have the info given too me straight up."

You should only really be asking yourself this question when your time is worth money. I hate to say it like that as it sounds rude. I mean when I first started I might have made 50.00 my first week. So if I found a coach that could give me a few weeks of knowledge to accelerate my business for 200.00 that would be a win and worth it to me then.

On the other hand if a teacher came along and said I can advance your business by 4 weeks just need you to drop 8k I would have to have said no. Why? My time money equivalent would not have made that a good trade off.

I know I probably did not explain it really good but I think I can simplify this.

Which one do you have more of
    Money or Time.
If you have more Money then time you can start to think about getting a coach.
If you have more time than money then you should not even consider a coach.

A lot of bad info going down in this thread. Look this is what it is. If you want to be successful you will work and figure it all out using google and studying on your own and making your own plans as well as following what other industry leaders are doing and reverse engineering it.. If anyone says that they where successful just because of a coach then they are not truly successful. They are just riding on someone elses coat tails. Once the game changes as it always does they have nothing while the guy who put it all together on there own can simply change the formula and be back on his feet. As he developed his skills on his own and needed no one else to do it.

I think it depends on how much time you have available and how willing you are to work hard for success. You can spend your life searching the web for all kinds of info about building an online business, but if you need to get started fast, then a mentor can put you on a fast track. You just need to decide if the investment in a mentor is worth all the time that it may save you.

Depending on what stage of life you are at, a mentor may be a great help. The younger people have plenty of time to research and learn on their own. However, there are more and more older people on the internet now who are looking for ways to supplement their income. They don't have "forever" to learn this stuff, so a mentor could be very helpful to them.

I agree to a point. As I have said I have used coaches but coaches did not make me who I am that took hard work. The coaches I use are time savors. They will not teach me anything I can random luck and reverse engineering I would figure it out eventually I just would rather spend the money then take the time.

Essentially you are learning a skill set. If the coach is not offering you a skill set that will save you time in the research phase he is as you say utterly worthless. Coaching is pretty black and white hey you want to learn this? You bet! Well let me teach you all I know in one week. Saves me time sign me up!!!

I have had 3 awesome mentors! They have helped me shave some time off my learning curve.

    But here's the thing...

No one can make you successful online. Your success is going to be left up to one person...

    "YOU".

You can be 'exposed' to the greatest training, the greatest mentors (a good mentor will help you to progress, a great mentor will allow you to struggle and not stop your 'growth') and the greatest opportunities.

But still, your success will be ONLY determined by what you are willing to do for yourself.

    Struggle is a good thing.

    It allows you to grow.

It also allows you to become 'self' reliant.

I like to learn new things everyday. I use a combination of self directed study, books, videos and mentors. Anyone can be a mentor for me due to their unique perspective on issues. Bus drivers can teach engineers a thing or two about effective design. Factory clerks can identify computer application deficiencies. Successful Internet marketers who coach save people a lot of time and money. Whether they are worth big dollars is up to you but paying for a coach is a great way to force motivation onto yourself.
