It isn't primarily about the number of words. Rather, it's the content depth, and this mainly depends on the following things:

    • Your Target Audience -- What are they looking for? Do they prefer extensively reading written content, or watching videos, or reading a bit of content and contacting you for more questions, or a combination of these?

    • What You Want Them to Do -- Do you want them to subscribe to your mailing list? Do you want them to request for a free estimate of their requirements? Do you want them to contact you via live chat or via email or via phone through your pre telesales team? Do you want them to share your content in their professional and / or personal social networks?

Here are some other things that could possibly better illustrate my point ...

    • In my experience, the "HOW seekers" normally prefer extensively reading content with infographics, reading a bit more content, watching videos, and they usually end up sending an email or requesting for live chat support; and

    • The "WHY seekers" normally prefer reading a bit of content, looking at a few infographics, watching videos, and they usually end up contacting you via phone ...

    • The "NEWS seekers" normally prefer to read news content summaries that highlight main points, looking at a few infographics, and they usually end up sharing your content across their professional social networks; and

    • As for the "ENTERTAINMENT seekers" -- They normally prefer watching videos, looking at infographics, reading stories, and they usually end up sharing your content in their personal social networks ...

    Gaurav,

Circa 2015, it's not about the "number" of words anymore. It's about the quality of content. How does your copy read? Who is it talking to? What does it say and how well does it say that? Is it readable? Do your pages (complete with copy, images, and other elements such as forms) play well with mobile?

Maybe you should use 1500-2000 word in your article. Article which is contain many words has a change to get the first page on google. Google like the article which is very detail

It can be more powerfull to get many traffic in your niche

Every website I create has at least one 1,200 word article on the home page with one to three subheadings.

The "about" and "contact" pages can be relatively short.

I vary the length of the rest of the articles on my sites (from 500 to 1,200+) to make the website look natural in the search engines' eyes.

Completely agree with Jonathan Henson the in most cases the main page should have a decent amount of content but it is equally important to ensure that you create interest in your visitors to stick around / opt in etc.
