That is not true , google will not penalize you just because your domain has keywords in it .

If you do a google search you will notice google still higlights if the key is in the domain name , why would they do this if they hated the idea ?

Don't worry about google. Just create/select a domain name that your target audience will "get" and "understand" instantly. There are tons of other better ways to get traffic online than just google. Focus on your audience/market and make sure they understand your domain name as soon as they see it.

Google will not penalize your website if it has a EMD. Earlier exact match domains had an extra advantage of ranking in google search, but now it is not the case, be it a emd or no-emd, you need good content to rank your website.

If you have good content, then your EMD will also add to your rankings.

They say Google likes and hates a lot of things. "They" are also very often quite clueless, ill-informed or peddling an agenda. If there is any SEO benefit to be had from using so-called EMDs (exact-match domains), it is so minuscule in most cases as not to warrant attention.

Personally, I think you would have to be pretty impetuous to allow such a thing to dictate your choice of name for a website or business.

question about buying a domain name for a micro-niche website,
If your site is about Blue Widgets For Grandma's then it's only logical you would want bluewidgetsforgrandmas.com.

It's because a lot of these emd sites were pure spam with useless content.

It's totally okay to have an exact match domain, but just like with a larger niche blog, you should write naturally (use keyword variation) and focus on providing value by answering questions that potential customers might have about the product. With that said, you also should not just focus on getting traffic from Google. For example, if the people in your niche visit a particular forum or use a certain social media platform like Pinterest or something, you should be there, too. When using social media, you should start getting followers before you start promoting stuff.
