[HELP NEEDED] How Do I Take Screenshots Of My Computer Screen And Edit Them?

40 replies
How do I take screenshots of my computer screen and edit the photo?

For instance, I want to take a screenshot of another websites homepage. Then crop that screenshot to my desire, put arrows within it to point to the main reason why I took the screenshot in the first place.

I will be inserting this screenshot into a blog post and describing it.

Basically, I just want my audience to easily understand key points from my blog posts by learning through visual examples.

How do I go about doing this process?

Thank you in advanced!

    alt (or function) + print screen button i believe

    print screen is usually over by the number key somewhere up top

    then I'd copy and paste it into whatever editing software you use.

    What would I do after I've tooken the screenshot? What simple editing programs will let me crop the screenshot, place arrows on it pointing towards whatever? Just simple functions.

    Thank you all for your responses!

      Hi jordand870,

      You can use Word and Paint for free.

      1. Paste screen shot in a document.
      2. Use Picture toolbar to crop
      3. Use Drawing toolbar to add arrows, text, etc.
      a. Right click on object, click "Format Autoshape" to change colors and lines
      4. Once you have completed your editing, make one more screen shot.
      5. Paste second screen shot in the document, or a new one, and crop.
      (note: This second screen shot is to anchor your objects/text)
      6. Right click pic and copy (or select the pic then Ctrl+c)
      7. Lastly, open Paint software, paste your pic and save as a JPEG, GIF or PNG

      One thing, you can add objects and text with Paint, I use Word for easy of use and personal preference.

      All the Best!

    Thank you all!

    I use Windows also!

    Is Paint good enough to just simply perform functions of cropping screenshots and creating arrows and boxes within those screenshots?

    Sorry about these questions that may seem a little too newbie-ish but this is my first time experimenting with this.

    Thank you all once again though!

      I didn't see this website mentioned already:

      Pixlr (http://www.pixlr.com) is a great free online photo editor that works on any computer since it's browser-based.

      If you go to that website and decide to use it, the application you're going to want to run is the one on the left, called "Pixlr Editor"

      Hope this helps,

    ScreenHunter is a good software which I use. It allows capturing and editing from the same place. No need to edit anything in paint.

    Yep, hit print screen, then open Paint and "paste" it in there, crop and voilà!
    I would also like to add that you can easily re-size it, I assume you need to.. just hit the "resize" button and play with the measurements
    Be sure to save it as JPEG or what michelle here mentioned, default saving format is BMP, which takes a lot of unnecessary space, IMO.

    Hi,

    If you have a Windows OS you have a FREE Snipping tool which comes on Win 7 & Win 8. To find it press START > Type in the Search bar > Snipping Tool and select it. This will allow you to take a screen shot of your screen and also crop at the same time. In order to edit the screen shot you can do this in MS Paint or any other photo editing software such as Macromedia Fireworks or Photoshop. Hope this helps

    Didn't really look through all of the comments on this thread. You can edit your photo through paint or PowerPoint. Paint is easier to use than PowerPoint though in my opinion. You didn't specify if you were using a pc or a MacBook though...

      I suggest 2 methods (for Window users):

      Method One: Print Screen Button (keyboard) + Paint
      (suitable for whole screen clipping)

      1) Press the button [PrtSc] on your keyboard; => this step copy the screen image
      2) Open Paint;
      3) Press [Ctrl] + [V] on your keyboard, this one will paste the screen shot in Paint;
      4) Do some cropping and editing in Paint;
      5) Save the file in .jpeg or in .png and rename it.
      6) Your screen shot is now ready to use.

      Method two: Microsoft OneNote + Paint (suitable to select only a part of the screen)
      1) Open Microsoft OneNote;
      2) On HOME tab, click on the SCREEN CLIPPING icon;
      3) Once the SCREEN CLIPPING is clicked, the OneNote will fade out, showing the screen. Now, left click your mouse, drag it until it cover the part/screen area you desired, then release the click;
      4) Now, the 'clipped' part of the screen appears on OneNote;
      5) Move your cursor to the clipped image, right click, then click on SAVE AS;
      6) If you need to do some editing, just paste it on PAINT;
      7) Your screen shot is now ready to use.

      Hopefully this help.

    Remember though that other peoples' websites are, by default, copyright. Taking screen shots of them and publishing them on your site is illegal without written permission.

      That's right, always request the owner's permission before doing any screen shoting to avoid copyright issue.

    Do yo use the WINDOWS 7 or upper version of this? if you can use the Snipping tools. It is really easy to use. On the flip side, if you use any other Operating system, you can use PRINT SCREEN button on the top right side of the keyboard. then the system will capture a photo of your current screen. then you can use the any designing apps or, you can use the "PAINT" That's all for the time being.

    You can use JING from techsmith for free. https://www.techsmith.com/download/jing/

    Been using it for years for the exact thing you describe.

    Or you can use Snagit (also from techsmith) for less than $ 50.00.

    I like using a free tool called snipping tool. You can copy sections of your screen rather then the whole screen. Then open in paint and make the changes you want. All free and quite simple to use.

    Both Online & Offline ways to capture a photo of your computer screen. There are many ways, you can follow any way, which you want. In the keyboard, you may found "PRINT SCREEN SYS RQ" button. just press on the button, you can go to ms paint, of any graphics designing apps. paste there then save it as your suitable format. Or, if you use windows 7, you can use the "Snipping" apps. it is more easier than the last way. Even you can use the online apps. in this case you have use the Internet. Thanks.

    Though Snipping Tool can help you to take screenshots, make quick edits, but it only provides quite limited editing options, it cannot meet your needs since it does not support to add arrows to the screenshot. Other more professional options such as Free Online Screenshot and Snagit (costs 49.95$), they both provide various capture modes and editing options. You can take your pick.
